DS has got a permanent job at last! Whoop!

2012 has been a terrible year for my family with a number of horrible things happening. Earlier in the year, DS went for a job interview, quite a few of you posted in support, but he didn't get it.

Today he did!

We are totally thrilled and so is he. DS is in his early twenties and has learning difficulties and ASD. Apparently, some of the staff at his new place of work also have relatives with ASD and they have decided to take him and and help him to ease into the job. So he will start with shorter hours and then build up as his skills and confidence grows. We are amazed that a workplace is prepared to do this in the current climate!

Pretty bad day today. He cut his hand and ended up in the staffroom crying. So they sent him home. He ran off and didn't come home until late, so we didn't realise what had happened. DH is going to ring them tomorrow to try to sort things out. Think they assumed he had more skills than he actually possesses and he tried to do something he didn't really know how to do.

Has been a pretty stressful evening so far!

Thanks again everyone! Yes, he is now back after his first day. Totally exhausted, moaning a bit and very overwhelmed. Normal for him then. Anything new is very difficult for him, but I'm sure he will get used to it. He is very happy about earning his own money and is planning what to spend it on Xmas Grin

nightcat he left school at 16 with no GCSEs - couldn't cope with exams due to his learning difficulties. Then went to college and did a range of courses for students with SEN. After he left, we got him on a range of supported work/training one of which offered NVQs in food handling.

Then this awful government got in and everything he was doing was cut. We were in despair, but we then got him in with Remploy. They did job searching and interview techniques with him and basically helped him to get this job. Now they have to continue to support him, I think, as they will not get the money from the government unless he stays in the job for at least a year.

well done :)
my ds spent a year looking and although had a few interviews, he only ended up with a voluntary job for a few months, so now went back to college

did your ds do any relevant training/college courses?

Congratulations OP. It this helps I am now pretty sure I have undiagnosed ADHD and nevertheless I am successful in my career. I am good with numbers, analysis, prioritizing tasks, efficiently working, straight to the essence type of person. I am very responsible. My bad points are that I have those days when I can't focus on what I am doing, or just browsing all day, and cannot interest myself to work. If I am stressed about something I have so much anger that I must hide myself in the toilet until I am calm. So, no one would know I have my temper issues and they would actually think I am pretty calm...

However.. my 4yo DS who is potentially ADHD or/and Aspergers too, manages to bring out the worst out of me on daily basis, and I feel both of us suffer and probably both of us need professional help.
