NEW Tinsley house support thread -part 2!!

Badvoc · 21/09/2012 20:05

Hello everyone!
Thought I should start a new thread as we were nearing 1000 posts! :)
Indigo is no longer posting as you all know, but I think it would be such a shame for the support thread to go too.
I know I find reading about all the ups and downs we all experience very helpful and it's so great to hear all the progress :)
So.
We go back to TH next month and can't wait. So interested to see of the tracking programme has worked. I think ds1s reading speed has improved and he is now reading proper chapter books!
He continues to show less anxiety, OCD behaviour and stress.
He is eating better and is generally a much happier chap.
Looking forward to hearing from you all over the next few weeks/months...X

Wrt veg...have any of you tried tempura veg?
It could be a way in for reluctant veg eaters...and you could use GF flour too if you are GF.
:)
They are very yummy.

Oh, could be! Tom got an awful uti with steep throat once when he was younger.
Tom continues to be snotty and coughy (is that even a word!?) but has no temp and is eating and sleeping well so am hoping for the best.
Ds2 still coughing too, sounds very chesty and wheezy but he is also eating and sleeping well so am thinking that I need to just wait it out :(
God, it's been relentless this winter!
Fil rang me last night and they can now not have the boys in Tuesday so won't be able to make the meet up after all :( they are going to see a friend who is having a big op next week. I think they area quite worried about her.
Right....need to do lumosity with Tom and then off to the shops...I forgot most of what I needed yesterday!
Have a good weekend x

That sounds like a good idea and I think I'll try something similar to try to get DD to eat new things, esp veggies.

Badvoc - I agree with you about the supplements. I was sightly stunned yesterday with the test results, but know how much better DS has been on the supplements / diet / exercises and think he would have been much worse off without them.

The bugs go on - DS has a temp and sore throat - poor mite is really not very well and I wonder ifs that's why he was peeing!

I think that makes sense. Dd isn't on the TH programme but I know she would really struggle to eat protein before school. I can only just persuade her to nibble dry toast. Luckily ds is obsessed with scrambled egg :)

Hi shopping. I think I'll do that. I'm fed up throwing food in the bin each morning then making the porridge anyway! His diet is much better than it was. I've cut out all the additives and increased the protein generally. He's with me all day and usually ready for a snack at 9.30ish so I'll just make that high protein. He'll (hopefully) be starting nursery in August but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Grin

Lookslikerain is ds at home with you most days? If so what about porridge for breakfast followed by high protein snack mid morning? The aim of the game is to get as much high quality protein into them as possible, the times of the day are less important if they're not going to school iyswim. Also if his diet is much closer to Robin's suggestions than previously you are doing really well. We've never followed the diet to the letter and have still had amazing results. I know Indigobell for eg followed it really closely but her dcs had tummy trouble too iirc.

You're welcome!
I love kedgeree :)
I think this winter has been really really bad for viruses.
My 2 have both been pretty much constantly ill since before Xmas.
Even dh - who has not had any time off sick for 4 years - succumbed this year!
I figure that for Tom he would have been much worse if not for the supplements and diet.

Thanks ladies - the peeing thing isn't new but only crops up once in a while. We'll go through a phase of finding puddles in really obvious places (like the middle of the kitchen floor or his bedroom) and then it doesn't happen for ages...

The dog is a rascal and I'm trying to pawn him off to my sister!

These colds are just going on and on.... DD has had a virus which keeps coming and going..

We've had a big hit with kedgeree for b'fast - thank you to whoever recommended it!

Just spoke to Dr Goyal and have loads of test results to absorb. DS has strep quite badly (which he suspected) plus is really deficient in iron, magnesium, zinc, B6, vit d, dha, omega 3 & 6. He's taking all of these and they have been helping so Doc thinks he is using them all up fighting his allergies and this strep! I find all this stuff fascinating.

Ah.
Appt cancelled. Dh has had to leave his laptop (with the webcam in) at work for an upgrade.
So we have re arranged for next week.
Ruggles...Good luck with dr Goyal x
I might try and make the meet up - it's a nearly 2 hour drive for me - but would love to meet you all before summer!

Oh, I am jealous of your meet up next week, but I'm just too far away. Envy

Things mixed with us. DS getting over another awful cold. The diet went completely out the window as he's been existing on air. Managed some exercises but he's pretty much just wanted sofa and cartoons again. I thought the healthy diet and vitamins etc should make him more cold-resistant but he's had 2 bad colds since starting!

Still struggling on breakfast. I've tried egg (in various forms), sausage, bacon, beans, cheese on toast. The only thing that he would eat was fish fingers but the novelty has worn off. This morning he put one piece of fish finger in his mouth, chewed for 10 minutes then spat it out. I either push the cooked breakfast and he eats nothing then throws a hunger tantrum, or I offer porridge and he eats something. He's only 3 with a language delay so trying to explain that he needs to eat it doesn't work. Argh! unimama I think our sons are porridge addicts!

badvoc Sorry about your sad news Sad. Good luck with your appointment today.

ruggles oh, your dog does sound like a naughty thing! We don't have a dog so I can't offer any advice. Or on toilet issues either. My DS is still firmly in nappies but he's at least started telling us when he's needing changed.

Ruggles - he's a boy. They pee everywhere! Grin

In all seriousness do you think it may be the holidays? Or just something new he has discovered and is enjoying?

I am really looking forward to Tuesday too. We should be only about a 40 minute drive away but it depends on what the M25 is like.

Sorry to hear about your dog. I have a cat that I barely cope with so I can't offer any advice there.

Badvoc - I hope you have a restful day today.

itwillbebetter - hang in there and keep going. The others have said it all so well. It takes time, but does seem to work! Through all of this stuff, I feel as if the worry is all ours and at times it can all seem like it's too much - my DH 'worries' but only when he consciously thinks about it which isn't that often. He tells me that we've researched everything carefully, know it is working for our dcs, so have to keep going and put our worries to one side. We have seen massive improvements - they really do creep up on you and become the norm. I write things down, review them and use this to motivate me. We looked at some video of our dcs from last summer and DS is a different child. We're only four months in and it makes me excited about what is to come. I have my fingers and toes crossed for you.

Badvoc - I am so sorry about your uncle. Sad. Your day does sound strange - what a mixture of things. Good luck with your appointment too.

Tuesday Meet Up at St Albans Butterfly Park - I am so excited about this! Any other takers? Daft...??? We can't be there until 11ish as a bit of a drive and we're not very good at getting out early during the hols.

I am fed up with our labrador. Last week he ran off up the hill and the dog control team bought him back (he was two fields away, but its lambing season) which cost us £75. On Sat he stole cheese on toast from the grill and yesterday wolfed down £18 worth of beef casserole I was cooking for my Dad (who started treatment on Tuesday).... Angry Angry DS had a bad couple of days too - two days of peeing all over the loo floor. Any ideas?

I have my follow up appointment with Dr Goyal this morning - can't to hear about the test results.

Well.....what a strange day..l.
Decided this morning that i would take the dc on an adventure. Bored of staying indoors!
So took them to Leicester museum and art gallery and then to McDonald's! (Don't tell robin!)
Then got a phone call my uncle died this morning. He had Parkinson's and dementia, but yet another of the family gone :(
Then got a lovely PM from someone thanking me for recommending engaging eyes and lumosity :) it's really helping this person and I am so glad.
Talk about ups and downs!
Tom is still suffering the effects is this cough/cold and his lumosity scores reflect that frankly. He is also much more short tempered with ds2 which is unlike him.
Dh is taking them out tomorrow for the day which they are excited about.
Skype appt tomorrow!

It is hard to turn off that sceptical part of our brains, I agree.
I am a working class girl from the midlands and I pride myself that my bull-shit-o-meter is pretty good :) so it was very very hard for me to open up to things like rrt and TH.
But, thank god I did!
We had already done rrt and so had seen first hand how powerful these seemingly random and slightly mad exercises seem :)
I think wrt to your ds it's probably a mix of issues...school hols and the changes you have made to do TH are messing with his brain function and his anxiety is the result of that.
It will get easier, but that doesn't mean it's not hard to see your ds suffer.
Remember...you are dong this for his benefit in the long term
Short term distress will not harm him. (Can't say the same for you, though!)

Badvoc- thank you. It's great to hear reassurance that its worth hanging on in there. Trouble is trying to shut off my skeptical brain. I know these early exercise's are meant to be the foundation for the later stuff but at the moment when I am on my knees with it all my brain keeps questioning it all?
He certainly isn't coming down with illness as this is a child who doesn't catch anything! He spent most of his first year in hospital and I think he used his quota of illness up in that first year! I kid you not he does not catch a thing! Grin
Shopping- yes I think you have hit the nail on the head. School hol's are generally bad as he hates any change to routine. I stupidly overlooked that and was a bit overconfident thinking he would be slightly better because of all the removal of additive's from his diet, not to mention the wonderful nutritious home cooked food I slave away to produce and the vastly expensive vitamins I'm shoving into him :)
Thank you all for your support, it means a lot. I'll phone Robin as well to see what he says x

Just thinking - could the increased anxiety be a combination of starting the new programme and school hols? Ds is always more nervy when we do anything 'different' from his normal routine. We get ' I just want everything to be normal' a lot.

It's ok to rant!
But it's not a quick fix, either.
Sorry.
I know that's not what you want to hear when your dc is suffering, but hang in there.
It will get better.

Ahhhhhhhh! Bangs head against brick wall. Ds2's anxiety just seems to be getting worse. Seeing him today riddled with worry and trying hard not to let me see him do his 'habits' is heart breaking! Poor little guy has to shut doors 16 times, flick light switches and can't sleep due to night terrors and we are all exhausted. Failing to see how walking up and down stairs and standing on one leg is making him better. He is pale and looks exhausted, thought this diet would make him full of vitality? I let him have weetabix before bed and feel like I'm loosing the battle:( sorry rant over x

Unimama- would your DS eat fish fingers for breakfast? Mine have fish fingers, baked beans and fried egg and love it. I give my guys bedtime porridge ( recommended by nutritionist) could you do a deal whereby he has protein for breakfast but gets porridge before bed? or maybe a bowl of prrridge after some protein in the morning?

Sounds like Butterfly Farm is a goer. Shall we definately do this instead of Windsor?. I think its a safer option and should give us a good option for a natter. If so, if you want to go then pm me for full details.

Easter has been lovely but I am slightly freaked out by all the chocolate. My kids have been so good but difficult to stay on track with the diet. On a better note, DS has had a breakthrough with the teeth exercise. Think we will finally be able to stop when we see Robin next.
