My son has been diagnosed with ASD. We are still at the stage of figuring out his needs but have started talking to him about Neurodiversity etc. One of son's strengths are reading. Last year, he grabbed 'The curious incident of the dog in the nigh time' off the book shelve and read it. This was prior to his own diagnosis. He was 8 at the time. I know this book is not aimed at 8 year olds so I did not expect him to understand all of it in depth. He recent brought the book up in discussion again, as the main character in on the spectrum. Both when he read the book as well as now, non of the behaviours or experiences of the main character struck my son as unusual. Just wondering if he is just too young to notice or if this might be a hind to the fact that he has similar experiences.

Any thoughts? Would your kids have noticed these differences and at what age?

Try him with "A kind of spark" or "Superstar"? He will recognise 'himself' in fiction just as anyone does (hence the importance of representation), but not necessarily only in autistic characters.
