Hi is there anything that a mainstream school has put in place or anything they do for your child that works really well? Age 4 starting school in september! She does have an EHCP & 121 support but aside from that is there anything that works particularly well?

This will very much depend on individual DC’s needs. The provision also needs to be in the EHCP. Some examples of things that can help are things like an enhanced transition, arriving early/late via a quieter entrance, somewhere quieter to eat lunch, a lunch club if the playground is too overwhelming, not going into assembly, adjustments to uniform if needed, sensory equipment, nurture group, SALT, OT. But it very much depends on DD and her EHCP. What does the EHCP include? What did the reports say? Does DD attend nursery?

@Headfirstintothewild thankyou. DD does attend nursery and she actually loves to be in the busy room. Her twin is in a quieter room and is much more sensory. Where as she doesnt really have any sensory issues. She doesnt mind busy rooms doesnt mind noise. Doesnt really have many meltdowns. But she is significantly behind her peers. We have viewed specialist settings which dont feel right for her. Shes very sociable and mirrors behaviours and language of others. Her twin will be attending a specialist setting as that what is right for him. The main concern is her not keeping up with the class in a mainstream. Her ehcp is generally stating 121 in all areas.

Make sure the 1:1 is actually detailed, specified and quantified in F. Rather than woolly and vague wording such as “access to”, “would benefit from”, “regular”, “up to”, “or equivalent”, “opportunities for”, “as appropriate”, “would be useful/helpful”, “as required”, “as advised”, “key adult(s)”…

doesnt really have any sensory issues.

If DD prefers busy environments have you considered she may be a sensory seeker?
