I used to be able to lose weight easily, why is it so slow now!

I've always been prone to putting weight on easily (ie a greedy sod) but could lose it fairly easily too, ie when I did all the right things the weight came off. But since I turned 40ish it's all changed. I've put on nearly 3 stone over the past 2 years or less, without really eating much more and every time I try to lose it, I give up because it's so slow. I probably need to lose more like 5st but even the extra 3st gone would be fine, it'd leave me at a weight I feel comfortable enough at.
Im determined things have to change though, I really need to lose this weight , slow or not but I would love to hear from anyone else who is in a similar position so I can see the light ahead! I started 2 weeks ago and lost 3.5lbs the first week and 1.5lb last week so 5lbs altogether. You might think that's not bad but in years gone by I'd lose that in the first week! I've been checked for thyroid issues and I'm fine, I know in my heart I've probably knackered my metabolism through 30 years of yo yo dieting but please tell me it's still possible?! I'm actually embarrassed now to meet people and I'd love to get a stone or 2 off before Easter to help me feel better about myself. Any advice or experiences?

6.5lb in three weeks is a brilliant weight loss!

Hi there, I know exactly what you are saying. I lost 3 stones about 4 years ago by eating 800 calories a day which of course wasn't sustainable. Over those years ive put t back on again even though I still only eat abut 1000 calories a day. I cant lose weight at all on a low calorie low carb diet, I think because my metabolism is so slow. Im perimenopausal and now on HRT patches. I feel great but fat! so have started SW and am in a panic at the amount of food Im supposed to eat :-( I just feel like Im going to get fatter!

Your metabolism slows as you age. I'm finding it really tough to stay slim over 40.

Another 1.5lb down so I'm trying to think positive and say that's 6.5lbs altogether which is nearly half a stone Grin. It's just so slow, I'm sticking to plan and not cheating, in fact the I'm eating a lot less than I was so I can't understand why I'm not losing more but I'm blaming my premenopausal hormones !

Hate to say this, but the older you get, its definitely harder to lose weight! Its another of the many buggers of getting older I'm afraid! Keep at it and it will happen, but yes, it will be harder and take longer. I'm 45 now and its even harder to do now!
