Slimming World

weight going up not down

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/02/2017 10:17

I have been doing Slimming World for 2 days now and seemed to have put on 3lbs.

I am really struggling to eat the food

I find with diets I can stick to them no problem but what usually happens is I lose a couple of pounds the first week, stay the same the 2nd then put on the 2lbs I lost the 1st week and start putting weight on the 4th week.

With slimming world I feel bloated and the scales appear to be going in the wrong direction. It is definitely more food and carbs than i am used to.

FWIW I am vegetarian. I don't like cakes or sweet things in general. The only things I have sweet is sorbet if I go out to eat (about once per month) and once in a blue moon I will eat chocolate. I eat loads of veg and maybe one piece of fruit per day. I try to eat very healthily as I like that sort of food but the weight piles on.

Usually I would eat Quorn fillets cooked in a jar of Italian tomato sauce (apparently about 5 syns for 1/2 jar) but the ready meal sweet potato curry is no syns but is huge and leaves me feeling bloated.

Am I doing something wrong.

Yesterday I had

Breakfast
Small wholemeal role with Quorn burger

Snack

1Apple

Lunch

I shared with ds we mixed the Iceland free food Byriani rice with a tin of beans.
Ds had more than I did.

Snack

Orange

Dinner

Slimming world ready meal Sweet potato curry with broccolli and carrots

I had 3 teas through out the day with a sugar in each.

I had the apple and orange and the slimming world chilli with 3 tblspoons of rice and broccolli carrots peas and cauliflower and my 3 teas the previous day

Am I doing something wrong.

Friend swears by it but I remain to be convinced

I am very over weight BMI well into the 30s

First of all stop weighing yourself at home. Secondly get on the website & find some veggie meals you like the look of and can attempt to make yourself. Their is also a site called slimming eats - her recipes are lovely. Thirdly drink lots of water & don't overeat, if you are full stop, don't eat the whole portion just because & if you find the portions are too big (which I do) then halve the ingredients.

SW does work but you need to look at your food differently & try to cook as much as you can yourself, ready meals are ok but home cooked are much nicer!

Good luck on your journey

That's a lot of carbs in your diet.

Bread
Rice & what not....I find slimming world to be difficult as all carbs are free :/ makes no sense.

Buy the magazine and there's a sample 1 week menu in there, it's also on the SW app online. Try overnight oats for breakfast (40g coats mixed with any free yog like muller light and I also add a dash of milk and whatever fruit I have. Leave it in fridge overnight and it's lovely and will keep you satisfied until lunch. Then have something like an omelette or cous cous or all day breakfast (all free) and an easy casserole (throw everything in a pot including lots of veggies) and have for dinner. It can. Eva bit monotonous all having to be organised and planned but you will get in the swing of it. I've done 13lb in 5 weeks and I haven't missed out on much. Good luck and use all the resources you can to keep you on track.

Needing to drop to 1000-1200 calories in order to lose weight is not that unusual. If I want a 1-1.5 lb weight loss each week I need to average below 1200 per day. I started at 14 stone 6 and have lost 3.5 stone with SW. It does work but you must have at least a 3rd of your plate speed food at each meal and loads of water. Constipation is common as the fat content is low so using some Syns for linseed or flax oil is a good idea.
I find cauliflower and brocalli work best for me.
I do occasionally use a jar of sauce and just syn it. Good luck

I was not blaming slimming world, my friend swears by it but for me I couldn't face anymore food or the other side effects anymore

Having looked at a few reasons why I could not be losing weight 2 things struck me.

Lack of sleep. I rarely go to bed before 1am. Ds Adhd and trying to get him to bed is dreadful and then for some reason I wake every morning between 4-4.15am and when I do get back to sleep I have to wake up at 6am to start the day.

The other is stress which would explain why I have put on 2stone in weight in the last year. Being a year ago since dp was diagnosed with cancer and told it had spread.

The rest of my life has never been stress free.

I don't think the US is a place to skimp on portion sizing in restaurants.

Completely agree. But in the US, you'd be surrounded by the types of very obviously unhealthy food that you've said you don't like. So I imagine you lose weight there because you avoid it.

Whereas the traditional cuisines in the other places appear healthier. What I'm suggesting is that your portion sizing if well off when it comes to foods you perceive to be healthy, hence slimming world probably isn't a good plan for you. You need something stricter like WW. Or you need to weigh things and calorie count with My Fitness Pal.

Op I see you have decided to stop sw, but wanted to suggest a few things that may help.

2 days is not long enough on any eating plan, at a guess you are bloated because sw when done correctly is high fibre and this can cause bloating and it can take several weeks to settle.

From your days menu I would say you weren't doing the intended thing of making every meal a 1/3 vegetables/fruit. Eg for breakfast you could have a roll, quorn burger and grilled tomatoes and mushrooms. I think this is considered to be better than no vegetables and eating the Orange/Apple later. When you did eat the fruit as a snack were you hungry or were you eating because you could?

Regardless of what eating plan you follow it really helps to be honest as others say about where your eating has contributed to your weight gain. Ultimately you have over eaten for a significant amount of time to have a bmi in the 30s (for me it was chocolates and take aways) and you now need to create a daily deficit so that your body uses your fat stores for energy.

I really recommend getting the magazines for eating plans such as sw and ww and follow the weekly meal planner. I have not known anyone to not lose weight where they have followed these plans to the letter.

Don't give up Smile. Losing the excess weight was the best thing I ever did, it is hard work and not something where you will notice a change after just 2 days.

Op, you have been doing sw for three days. Slimming World didn't cause this. It just didn't. I think you need to see a doctor. Your bmi is around 36 which is obese. You don't get to that weight and maintain it by eating moderate portions of vegetables, salad and fruit and avoiding carbs, desserts, fats and alcohol. Either you are really underestimating your calorie intake or you need to see a doctor.

I fail to see how this is a SW problem and not just a health problem :/

Hi , hope you are ok , prahaps worth another trip to doctors ? The basics of slimming world seem to encourage eating a balanced diet with protein , plenty of fresh food , some carbs and room for other foods that could be treats , sauces whatever . All in reasonable amounts and chosen well , plenty of water too . To have had such a negative effect in a couple of days is unusual ?

Hope you manage to find some answers because l would be concerned if l ate hardly any food and still gained weight , it really sounds like a medical issue ? I find the slimming world plan very easy , l change some stuff around and it seems to work ok , l think it is finding a balance that is right for you ? I only get weighed once a week , prahaps just give it a few weeks ? X

I was still fat. 10stone 7lbs.

OK, how much do you weigh now and how tall are you? Because at 10st 7lbs, you'd have to be really quite short to even break into the overweight category. And you'd have only just been in that category, certainly not fat.

If everything you're saying here is accurate, you really need another talk with a doctor.

But given what you've said about weight coming off or going on depending on where you've gone on holiday, I'd say it's probably a portion size issue. I think you simply don't realise how much of certain foods you're eating and often don't know what's actually in it, so foods you think are healthy, you eat lots of without realising you're taking in lots of added sugars, olive oil, etc.

Apart from my tea I don't think I eat much that is laden with sugar.

Yesterday was the first time I had eaten beans in a long time.

I don't think the Quorn products I eat are laden with sugar either.

I don't know if it is of any significance when I go on holiday i pile on the pounds unless I go to the US. I can lose 10lbs over a 2 week holiday. It positively drops off me. I can go to Barbados Spain France and the weight piles on.

TBH any sugar in your diet is excessive. there is plenty in the food we eat and there is increasing consensus that it is sugar not fat that makes people obese.

do you like eggs? I appreciate no diary but are you eating enough protein?

I also think you should go back to your GP. have you had your thyroid checked?

the only thing I can see from your diet is the excess sugar but if you are describing accurately I cant see that you would be overweight.

Yes I am keeping a food diary

I did MFP and found in calorie terms if I pigged out and ate 1700calories I put weight on. 1400calories I stayed the same. I only lost weight if I fell to sub 1200 calories or ate the 1400 calories and then did 1hour and 20 minutes on my cross trainer. (bought because I didnt have the time to go to the gym at the time the gym was open)

I found it really tough going and managed to lose 5lbs over a few weeks but couldn't keep it up as dp got ill.

I'd defiantly go back to the doctor, what you say you eat would not make you over weight, how do you think you got over weight? Is there a chance your eating more then what your acknowledging as I know I do this, cooking the kids dinner for example I pick whilst I'm cooking then don't count them as syns even though they are and I know Iv eaten it!

I think id go back to the doctor. Theres no way you should be overweight based on what you say you eat.

No I don't drink at all.

Yes I have been to the doctors

I was presented with a sheet of paper with this triangle thing on it and told I really must not eat doughnuts (I cannot stand the smell of them) or cake etc. And to eat plenty of vegetables etc.

When I tried to explain that I have never eaten a doughnut in my life nor do I eat cake or anything that contains loads of fat. Like butter.
I do have a wheat and dairy allergy which comes out as eczema so try to avoid wheat and dairy as much as possible. Although this isnt easy at times.

The doctor just looked at me and said if you don't eat anything you will lose weight.
I don't think he believed me. Which means I got no where
