Slimming World

Advice on whether to try SW

Hi all
I'm new to mumsnet so not done this before.

I am thinking of joining Slimming World but was wanting to know your views on it beforehand.

Also wondering what is involved?

I've tried Weight Watchers in the past but the point counting takes a while each day and I got to a point where I just stopped losing weight.

Thanks in advance on any comments.

Mumma although you don't have to weigh pasta, potatoes etc, the idea is that you fill a 1/3 of your plate with pasta, 1/3 speed food (salad or veg such as broccoli, lettuce etc), and 1/3 free foods (also veg, salad etc).
So you don't have just a plate of pasta! Well you can if you incorporate veg etc into your pasta sauce, which you make from scratch.
You fill up on free foods and get creative.

You're welcome Mumma! It's great to question things (anything!), knowledge is power. Don't believe the hype about anything, always do your own research.

Thank you for all your comments. Both the positive and the negative.
Yes Runner maybe I should have put this on the weight loss tips rather than slimming world but I wanted to know more about slimming world as well as views. I wanted to know more because I don't understand how pasta can be classed as a free food when it is a carb.
I am still questioning what I should do to lose weight but I know I need to do something!
Thank you everyone for your responses and we'll done to those who are losing weight!!

It's rude to post on a thread asking for advice to pedal your own agenda Runner Hmm

Since starting Slimming World I have never eaten so much fruit, veg, salad and lean meat. My sugar and white bread intake has also dramatically dropped as a result of following the plan too. Muller Lights and Hi-Fi bars aren't compulsory, but for some people it's nice to be have the option - everything in moderation. It's been 2 weeks now and I've lost 6lbs.

Surely if people are losing weight, it doesn't really matter whether they eat Muller Lights or not. And if it helps them stick to a healthier eating plan for longer, then surely that is better than them getting fed up of it and falling off the wagon. My partner eats a Muller Light with his lunch every day. He's lost 3 stones and is now at his target weight. I don't eat them because I don't like them. Not everyone wants to be an athlete or look like one. Some people just want to follow a program to help them lose weight and get healthier in the process. Eating a Muller Light would be a lot better than a lot of the other rubbish I was eating!

Good for you Emma, so you know and understand why Muller Lights are not the answer but that doesn't stop millions of others eating them at the recommendation of SW! They only advertise things like that because the money fills their pockets!

I answered to give the op another view. Asking if SW is any good on a SW board is going to be very biased, maybe the weight loss board would have given OP some wider insights.

runner, why bother coming to post on the Slimming World board? It's just rude in my opinion.

I've been doing SW for over a year now and have lost 3.5 stones. I've still got a lot more to lose, but it's worked for me. I've not eaten a muller light since my first month on it and never had a hifi bar. I eat normal food. The only low fat thing I have is Fromage Frais in my curry that I have maybe once a fortnight. I do 4 sessions of exercise a week (a dance class and 3 runs - I'm on week 3 of the couch to 5k program). I need some sort of program to follow to help me limit eating unhealthy food. If I just tried "eating healthily" I would slip up all the time. It's just the way my brain has a relationship with food.

My auntie did/does SW and reached her target around 6 months ago after being obese for as long as I remember (at least 26 years). She's now a size 10 and looks amazing. She's incredibly fit and does loads of exercise. She's not an athlete, she's just a normal person!

But they recommend low fat dairy, fat free yoghurts, unlimited white pasta. The whole thing is flawed and unhealthy!

That's fair enough runner, but you don't have to eat muller lights nor hifi bars, the emphasis is on eating the free food, fruit, vegetables and salads, incorporating your fibre and dairy and being able to have a treat.
How you use your Syns is up to you. People do lose weight on it, which has got to be more beneficial that being overweight to their health and wellbeing. Exercise is also recommended.
You do eat real food, but most people aren't overweight from eating real food, it's from eating too much of the wrong stuff and looking for a miracle slim cure.

But what they recommend is WRONG! Why is this not obvious to some people? Show me a slimming world life member who looks like an athlete? Show me someone who's kept it off forever.... Just wrong and unsustainable.

They conveniently ignored yesterday's news about avoiding low fat products and launched another frigging processed Hifi bar! It's unbelievable what they recommend. Chemical shit storm in all their processed "free" products (muller light) etc. Whatever happened to eating real food?

I have done WW and SW I find SW easier it's less counting and more learn healthy ways to eat and choices.

I have lost 17lbs sine Jan and honestly honestly haven't been hungry !

I find it more straight forward than WW, you have free food, healthy extras a for dairy (milk or cheese) and b for fibre (bread or cereal) and 15 Syns a day to use either in meals or for treats.
I'd recommend going to a class to have it explained properly. Like anything, you need to plan to a degree, I'm relatively new, but finding it straightforward, oh I'm veggie but that's not a problem
