Can I switch off the huge ads (please)?

Absolutely HUGE ads are taking up half the screen this morning. They are massive!!! Running down both left and right sides of the page and leaving very little space for any actual threads.

Is there a way to switch them off please? I want to read thread conversation content not look at twee adverts for stuff I don't want (and am even less likely to want now given that they are annoying me!)

Can I switch off the huge ads (please)?

Thank you, I think that should help people.
I don't currently go on Bereavement or Miscarriage but have been there.

@drspouse

They were showing up on Active Threads and Threads I'm On which are most people's landing spots. Maybe they could just not appear on those?

Will check to see if we can include those pages too.

@DownHereInTheHorridHouse

I'm quite uncomfortable with the idea of saying MAP ads are unsuitable for MN.

I know it's personal and some have said they're triggering, but everything's triggering for someone somewhere. As someone who has had - many, many - miscarriages, I still think it's pretty important to have avenues which offer women choice and options.

I think you make some very valid points and we're not putting MAP ads on the banned from MN list for those very reasons. I do though think it's the right thing to do to not show them on miscarriage and bereavement topics.

That's true of course down. There are places where those kind of pills aren't even allowed and it's a freedom which should be advertised / accessible in general.

Personally I've never felt anything except a slight sadness at the sight of them although I can imagine the full force blow at the wrong time (as mentioned above).

I don't get the full ad on the mobile app anyway and I'd probably block them if it bothered me, but I guess it depends on the general net gains. I wonder how many visit the MC boards? MN probably knows what % of their audience could be sensitive to these ads and can make a business judgement overall.

@Merd

Hello Justine. With those, so many of us come here for the miscarriage threads when we're having an emotional time - it would be a bit like (but not quite) lots of suicide clinics being advertised near the bereavement boards ... I think.

Dawn seemed to get it a bit more upthread?

Yes I see that Merd - we will definitely make sure these don't appear on the miscarriage (or bereavement) boards.

As posted above, for many members it is triggering.

We don't currently have any restrictions on advertising the Morning After Pill on Mumsnet. Just wondered what the objection is?

The MAP ad is back...

I agree these are too intrusive. It seems we're serving both reskins (the wrap-around ads) and leaderboards/billboards (top ads) at the same time. That's a mistake and we'll fix asap. We'll also reduce the frequency of the wraparound ads - they do generate more revenue but agree they are quite in you're face so we'll cap them to show only a few times a day.

Sorry for any upset - we'll sort this asap.

Not a single ad here, thanks to adblock. Solves all the problems!

Spiders- of course it is!

Weirdly after weeks and weeks the big ads have finally gone from my phone !!!

I'd rather have constant small ads (which I'd not bother blocking) than intermittent huge ones that are unpredictable.
People really hate unpredictability.

Please can you just remove the Morning After Pill ad? I don't think it's something Mumsnet should be pushing.

Yup, uBlock (better than adblock!) reluctantly installed, the ads make the site unusable.

Thanks for the update, Rebecca. Sadly Zombie has already gone over to the dark adblock side. The wrap around ads made the site unusable for her.

Ok, well thanks for the update. My feedback is that I will start using adblocker.

Hi all,

Thanks for your posts and feedback.
Yes, it is a new thing and we've been tweaking it to see how it works.

The new skins will run across the site but you shouldn't see them more than once per hour, please do let us know if you do.

Apologies for the lack of response and conflicting info, it took us a bit longer than normal to get to the bottom of what was happening.

Obviously, we'll be listening to your feedback, as ever so please do keep it coming.

If we keep bumping the thread it will get onto 'trending'. Then anyone who clicks will keep it there. All the advertisers will see that posters are being forced to use adblock and may decide to withdraw their ads. Maybe that would encourage HQ to deal with this Wink

I have been quietly seething about these huge ads for days, fair enough you need advertising monies, but to give over what appears to be almost 50% of your page to it, just not on really, unless you are changing it to Mumsnet, mostly advertising and some chat forum!
It make the post barely visable, they disappear into the mele at the top and side.
Come on HQ a serious rethink is needed here, I know we like a little moan when things change, but this is ridiculous.

Please get rid of them!

They are still there, MNHQ!
