We are moving to this area and going to apply for a secondary school for my son who has SEND. Would like to have review here for Chalfont Independent Grammar School at London Road, High Wymcome. There are some discussions about this school but dated 2018. I noticed that the number of pupils has increased to 75 now. Thank you.

My son joined the school last September. I loved the approach that the school takes with teaching through the Harkness Method (small class sizes and discussion based) as well as the passion that the Headmaster has for learning. Since joining, I've been blown away!

The style of the IB is so different to other schools (who don't offer the IB), as the learning is relevant and connnected and so my son doesn't seem to realise that he is learning!

A recent example is maths - instead of pages and pages of sums (as I did as a child & hated!), they are all relevant. They have been looking at their carbon footprints and so learned how to calculate everything to do with their own personal footprints (so for my son, the maths is remembered as its being used) and then in addition to the maths, they talk about how individuals and countries can reduce their footprint, along with the benefits etc. It is a really engaging school and they seem to cover all learning styles. Whatever they are doing in lessons is usually backed up with a trip of some sort to see it in practise.

In terms of SEND support, as the classes as so much smaller (max 12 per class) my son no longer needs additional support outside the classroom - although there is dedicated SEND support.

I was initially worried about the small size of the school and how this would impact socialising, but the children do a lot as a year group, but are also in vertical form groups. Each form ususally has 2 kids per year and so they mix across the ages as well. My son loves it and has a gang of about 12 friends who range in age from 11-15 as well as his class mates.

If I can help in any other way - please let me know as I know how difficult it is to choose the correct environment and it can be so hard to really understand what all the different schools offer.

My daughter also attended the Chalfonts Independent Grammar School for 5 years. She loved it from day one, was involved with Model United Nations conferences, was an Amazon AWS GetIt finalist (one of 10 schools from 140), completed her DofE Awards, performed in school plays/concerts and achieved fantastic exam results (13 GCSE equivalents).
Cannot recommend the school, or the IB (International Baccalaureate) education there, highly enough!

@ReneeZ
It’s truly not a grammar school. As it’s ludicrously small it has huge limitations. It’s a haven but it’s not a grammar school.

We are also considering CIG for our son. This thread has been really reassuring.
We visited recently and were super impressed with the staff and the pupils. Lots of passion, professionalism and honesty.
I would love to hear from anyone who has experience of the IB years in this school. Are the kids well supported across all subjects in the IB? The program is so broad I would imagine it's hard to cover it all in a smaller school.
best wishes

Understand from the start that the name has no relevance to what the school
does - it is nothing like a grammar school.

That said, I have known several boys go there and thrive. They all had SpLD and the Harkness method really suited their needs and personalities in a way few other local schools could. They’ve gone on to good destinations at sixth form - don’t know anyone who’s stayed yet.

Thank you to all who answered my post and sorry for the late reply. I just read all the messages tonight.

@Cryptic08 - I thought the school runs IB program. I am a bit confused with what you said of GCSE result?

I viewed the school in March - it is fairly small, good thing is it has smaller class, not good thing is school has not had many facilities so most of activities such as drama or sports are taken externally, not within the school. I was told that teachers have multi qualification so they can step in as back up when needed.

The school is moving in September to a bigger site round the corner from where they are now. (They have also bought a permanent site that they are building and developing for the longer term in the Chalfonts).
At present the school uses a hall next to the big car park for performances and drama and the children go to the leisure centre at Handy Cross for sports that can’t be done on the field. It soon becomes normal and isn’t a negative for the kids as the facilities are just minutes away.

Hi all, Just wondering how it's going for anyone who chose this school? We are visiting it next week. Would love to hear more up-to-date thoughts. Also, if they do the MYP programme are they able to move into a traditional (state) grammar at 6th form? Admissions are often based on GCSE results.... Not sure how the MYP translates. Thanks

We’ve been at the school for 3 years now and absolutely love it! We had an offer for year 9 for Shiplake (where a lot of friends kids go and love it) but decided not to move as our son is so happy and flourishing at this school. The school has strong results for MYP (this year had the highest ever total score for an MYP certificate and outperformed other similar IB schools for the third year running according to the stats). Whilst the teaching style is very different with MYP, the curriculum is very similar to GCSE (my son and his best friend who is doing GCSEs covered the same novels in English) and the majority of schools will accept MYP certificates in place of GCSEs so not a problem longer term. The MYP certificates are graded and comparable and the IB exams at 6th form have equivalent UCAS points.
Since moving to a new site, the school has expanded a lot, taking on more students and hugely improving their facilities. The science block is impressive and the drama suite is a favourite with a lot of the kids so well worth another look around!

Hi - my son joined the school in September 2023 and is loving it. His confidence is building, he's made many friends and he's finding it easier the contribute in lessons.

There seems to be lots of external events to keep them busy too - mud assault course challenge, Independent Schools football tournament.

The MYP is a GCSE equivalent & I'm not aware of any schools not recognising it (just as they would recognise any other GCSE equivalent examination e.g. quality from outside the UK). I'm aware of a number of kids going onto to study A'Levels at the local grammar schools.

My child has been at the school 4 years and it has been a mixture. In terms of school size it works well, in terms of ways of teaching the therory of the idea is great, however totally depends on how good the teacher is. Some are very good some are very poor!
In terms of well being / common sense / pragmatism it is below poor. Certainly if my child had their time again I would choose a different school completely that teaches IB
