Showers after PE

Hi,

DD moving up to middle school next year and having read the school brochure, saw it said about having showers after PE.
I can't believe (from my own experience) that they still subject chidlren to the misery of standing naked in a school shower with no curtains.

Can the school make the chidlren have showers after PE? I would have thought not due to child protection issues but not sure. Anyone know and anyone told the school that their child won't be having humiliating, naked showers after PE Sad

OP, I'm the same, horrible memories of PE teacher standing at the end of the shower tunnel watching us wash and making us go through again if she thought we hadn't washed enough. We weren't allowed to cover ourselves with towels either so had to walk naked from one end of the changing room ,through the shower and back. Hideous.

There are showers but no one uses them as they have exactly 5 mins to get changed. They've been told they can bring shorts if they want to use them, but no one does. They didn't at middle school either.

Changing accommodation and showers for pupils
Changing accommodation, including showers, must be provided for pupils aged 11 years and over who participate in physical education. Showers should be separate from toilets and provide adequate privacy. Consideration should also be given to providing changing rooms, with or without showers, for pupils younger than 11 who need to wear sports kit for physical education.

Schools generally do not enforce or encourage showers (except boarding schools) because generally the risk of any accusations just isnt worth the hassle also time issues come into play imagine how long it would take a class of 30 to undress shower dry redress also i highly doubt many parents would support schools making there children shower and i doubt a school could do any more than suggesting a shower any more than that could lead too alsorts of legal issues you certainly couldnt legally make children shower only parents maybe able too that, personally when i went too school me and my friends all showered naked soap\shampoo our parents had no issues but times change and people are much more cautious eg pedophiles etc

I used to have showers after pe and me and my friends had no issues with washing throughly shampoo hair and body and then getting dressed im surprised schools dont have curtains and encourage good hygine the schools are or used too have loco parentis surely the can encourage children\pupils too get clean after pe i cant imagine what its like for a teacher after a pe lesson to teach up to 30 plus children that are hot and sweaty mixed with lynx why have schools stopped this if its a time thing somethings are important and time should bé found surely this also comes under PSHE Personal Social Health Education personal hygine, what do other parents think?

I wish schools would introduce shower curtains\cubicles privacy is important and really encourage children too shower after PE this would come under PSHE and this could bé a better option than just lots of spray which just masks it i cant even imagine teaching in a class of 30 or more sweaty or muddy teenagers after pe depending on what they have done in pe also i know when i was at school 1990 to 95 it kept my uniform cleaner it wasnt a big deal we just all got on with it im surprised that time is an issue schools should at least allow time and its then the children\teenagers choice maybe teachers dont think this is important or parents would support them i dont know i as a parent would fully support the school

Agree with others, my DS never showers at school and I wish he did, comes home caked in mud from rugby Grin.

By the way, this is a very old thread from 2010 !

When I started high school it was being rebuilt so no showers

Half way through yr 9 we had to start having communal showers

It was a horrendous experience

If you looked anywhere but at the wall directly in front of you you were accused of being gay yet everybody's bodies were picked on

I was really tall but had comparatively small breasts, that was picked on, my friend who was 5ft2 had pendulous E cups, picked on, the girls that still looked like primary children, picked on, too much pubic hair or not enough -picked on

If you were on your period you could go in topless with your gym skirt on, I'm not sure why we thought this was better but the maximum you could get away with was 2 weeks as it was recorded in the register

And this was mid 90s

I was so relieved when dd started high school and there was no towel on the kit list

I am foreign & we all had showers after secondary PE. You were considered utterly minging that you didn't. Nobody felt humiliated, well, maybe if you didn't shower. FFS, it's just a naked body. We all have one.

It's funny how MNers moan about horrendously stinky BO everywhere, but then bemoan showers in school. Goes a long way towards explaining why British are so freaked out by nudity.

Communal showers at my school in the 70s. All forced through with the PE teacher watching. It was totally humiliating not least because of developmental issues - I was the last to grow boobs and start my periods and I shall never forget how unhappy and inadequate it made me feel.

We all had to go through completely naked and the PE teacher watched to check that we did. She had a manly haircut, huge legs, wore lace up brogues and tweed suits when not in PE kit.

Looking back it fills me with utter disgust and I find it difficult to believe that neither parents nor girls complained. Today I think she would have been dismissed for gross misconduct. She was an utter bully too.

The day I finished by O'Levels and left the school I vowed that nobody would ever again make me hit, throw or catch another ball and to this day I have never used communal changing room - although I don't they exist either now.

There were no showers at my school - so far as I recall we just brushed the mud off and changed as quick as poss. Have been doing tours of all the local schools this month - not one has shown or mentioned a shower. Thought it was just a myth.

I don' know of any school where they have showers after games or PE. Imagine the time it would take!

DCs' school (failing comp) actively discourages students from having showers as it gives the bullies too much opportunity (staff in changing rooms by exception only)

I never had a shower at school in the 1950's 1970'2.

DC have never had a shower in school either after pE or after school and they both do a lot of sport.

Is it just private schools that do showers?
Confused

We used to have to have take showers in a communal shower. We used to wrap out towels around our bodies and just get our hair and shoulders wet. The female teacher used to come and check sometimes. We found out later she was gay. I dong remember this when I was older though - maybe it was years 7-9. I think I've you had you'd period then you dicing have to take a shower.

DD1?had just started in year 7 so I faked her about showers. There are individual shower cubicles but they don't have to take a shower , although they do usd communal changing rooms when they go swimming.

"t is wrong that mums tolerate their little boys being forced to do swimming topless in shorts or brief style swimming trunks when we require modesty for girls."

Eh?

They have shower cubicles as my son's school I think but none of the kids shower as there isn't enough time between lessons for them to.

No child should be forced to be naked for any reason.

End of.
