If you said The Lord's Prayer at school in the '70s...

Apart from weddings and funerals, I am not a churchgoer, but I was at a service today and the Lord's Prayer was said. Now, I've not said it since primary school, but it came flooding back, except I said "Forgive us our debts" as the rest of the congregation said "Forgive us our trespasses". Has it changed over the years, or was my primary school out of line with everyone else?

In my experience trespasses is a catholic thing (we said trespasses at school RC school) Debts is a Church of Scotland thing (said at Brownie services in cos church))

Normal London primary back in the 60s, in fact the catholics had to leave the room for prayers on some days and go to the catholic church down the road.
We always said trespasses everyday in assembly, never heard debts before.

It was "forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors" in the 90s where I was!

We had a religious divide in our family so I went to mass or Church of Scotland as a kid depending on who was around.

It was debts/debtors in CofS and the “for the kingdom, power and glory” bit.

trespasses and a truncated prayer in the Catholic Church. Inevitably one of my siblings or I would end up looking like a tit as we thundered on with the next bit.

Trespass here too…to be fair I think things moved on. I was dragged to mass every Sunday until I left home in my early 20s. I went to a service a couple of years ago after never having set foot in a church in about 20 years and they’ve only gone and changed loads of the words! Felt quite the fool for standing up at the wrong bits and saying the wrong words to prayers which were just drilled into me that they came out automatically! Apparently the catholic mass was updated a few years ago (I suspect to make it easier to catch heathens like me out 😂)

Church of Scotland..debts. Church of England trespasses. It’s not changed it just depend where in the world you are.

Obviously my (non-denominational, non-church-linked) state juniors was a bit antiquated. Northern England, 1990s (typed in true run-on style with no thought for the meaning, as is correct for compulsory school worship):

Here in Scotland it was debts/debtors as the church of Scotland uses the King James Version of the bible, however as different Christian denominations use different versions of the bible the words will vary

My mum's cos church still say debts/debtors but in my dc's coe school they use trespass which then causes them much mirth as they can hear Granny loudly saying the wrong word every time!

Highlands of Scotland here and it was always debts and debtors. I'm sure I did hear trespasses a while ago at a funeral though, I remember thinking it sounded so odd.
