how much do removals companies cost?

We are moving from a large 3 bed to a ok sized 4 bed aprox 15 miles away.

We have an average amount of furniture but not much clutter.

I am thinking we will go with the packing service as I have a DS of 21 months and it will be weeks of hell for me to do it myself.

We are in rural Devon if that makes a difference.

What should I expect?

We’ve moved with Elephant Removals several times now, our last move was within London and it worked out to be around £995 for a 3 Bedroom Contents on an hourly basis including pack, materials and move. The staff were well-organized professionals and brought everything down via the stairs pretty quickly without any hiccups despite move being on an hourly rate. They’ve given me so much hints and tips that I felt it necessary to let others benefit too.

I used Elephant Removals for the first time and the prices were quiet competitive compared to many other removal firms.

I paid £395.00 for a good number of hours of move across London which I thought was really reasonable as I have been quotes close to 1k.

I did my own packing etc to keep the costs to a minimum.

We paid just under £1100 to move from a 3 bed house to a 4 bed recently. This included packing, insurance and their own packing materials which will be refunded if we return the boxes (they come and pick up). This price included dismantling and re-assembling of the big items of furniture such as beds, wardrobe, etc.
We moved from SE London to Kent approx. 20 miles away. We got quotes from the British Association of Removers (www.bar.co.uk) and we went with the middle quote. The highest quote by far was Pickfords at over £2.5k!
We are pretty happy with the removals company and the best thing was the packing which only cost a fraction of the full cost. They did all the packing in one day when it would have taken us weeks if we had done it ourselves.

We paid around £900 for a full pack and move from small 3 bed (3 bed / 1 bath / 1 reception / large kitchen) to somewhere a similar distance away, around Manchester. We got the packing service because we had a 10 month old at the time - best thing we spent money on in the whole move (apart from the house of course!)

Packers are here as I type! £1200 for a 3 bed only moving 4miles away. £650 is the packing alone.

I moved house last year (London) and got three quotes - two were about 3.5k and the other was a thousand pounds less. We went with them and they were v good. They did all our packing and did it very well. They made a few small scratches on walls etc when moving all our stuff in to the new place but I think a little bit of surface mess is inevitable.

We've done three (admittedly long distance of around 150 miles each time) moves and have paid around the £3500-4000 mark for a reputable removal co - and that didn't include packing.

Most recent move (Dec 16th 2014) we had several quotes from local and national removers, ranging from £3400-£4200 and ended up paying £3600.

We do have serious quantities of possessions, both furniture and otherwise though......in fact they had to do a separate load purely for garden items.

Our previous move (2011) we decided to DIY and still spent in the region of £2000 for van hire, fuel etc.....

I'm genuinely envious of those that have so little stuff!

I can't believe how much some of these quotes are! We are paying 70 next week for a man and van service from a proper removal company. even the full removal service would only have been just over 100. Cannot imagine paying 1.5k to move my furniture I'd rather do it myself with a van

I'm astounded by some of the removal costs I'm reading here! I've just had two quotes, granted it isn't a straightforward move but even so.....
I'm moving 30 miles and have been quoted approx. 3500k and 4500k to pack a two bed bungalow, taking essentials and very little furniture to the new house and the rest to storage (the price of which isn't included in the prices I've quoted here btw!!) and back again after building works.
I have a garage, three sheds, lots of garden paraphernalia and plants plus a full loft to consider.
If I do the packing, the price comes down by about a grand. Whoop-de-doo!!
I'm on the east coast of lincolnshire, and would be interested to hear from anyone who has moved recently in the same area and what they paid as I think I'm getting my leg pulled, big time......
