HELP! PAINT WON'T STICK TO THE WALL

I am decorating the living room with Dulux Endurance Almond White.

I prepped the walls by sanding them. Then I washed with sugar soap and wiped them down with clear water.

The paint is not taking to the walls whether I use a brush or roller. If the roller or brush goes over a bit already painted the paint comes away.

Can anybody tell me where I have gone wrong?

The walls were all perfectly cleaned. I think it most likely the previous paint or the walls as it was fine into the window.
Hopefully second coat will be better.

They might have used a bathroom paint designed to resist moisture - not as shiny as silk paint but the same issues painting over it if you are using matt paint.

I've had it happen on a dirty surface. Rub the surface with a clean white cloth, damp with water and household cleaner. Does dirt come off on the cloth?

I realise this is an old thread but just did a Google and this came up as it is exactly my experience today.

I'm painting the ensuite with Dulux bathroom paint and had to resort to a brush on the ceiling in the end as the roller just rolled off all the wet paint.

Should the second coat go on better or would I be better off using a brush all over as it is thankfully only a small room?

I wondered if the previous owners had used silk. Or if it is the paint. I normally love painting but first coat was a nightmare and looks a mess. Any help appreciated.

I have experience of this and was told it’s a combination of wall porosity, temperature and these special durable paints.

I called Dulux about it and they said to avoid rolling over the same area twice and just go right round the room (I guess us perfectionists need to be patient) and avoid trying to touch up gaps where I'd missed a bit .

Just keep going, and then once fully dried, do the second coat to ensure its all covered.

Worked a treat for me.

I have the very same problem today, just wondering have Dulux changed something in their paint. I have been painting for over 45 years and never had this problem before. The walls look like I puked on them now.

Quick update.

Put a second coat on yesterday and it looks more like it is supposed to.The paint went on absolutely fine this time. I am very relieved as I was anticipating having to start from scratch all over again.

Next time, I will use an undercoat or primer first, just to be on the safe side.

It will need another coat, as it is slightly darker where I have done the cutting in with a brush. Thankfully, I think I know how to rectify this.

I have been having a bit of a google and it may be down to the thickness of the paint. It seems to be a common complaint in the last couple of years.

Although, anyone of your suggestions could be the solution.

On a positive, the colour does looks like it will be lovely, once it is on properly.

Just asked DH, and he said if you have sanded and sugar soaped, then it should be fine- but where you have tried to repaint, you may need to redo.- I have just shown him the link to the primer above, and he seems to think thats the stuff our decorator recommended. Hope it works! ( we are pretty sure that our previous owner had used anti graffiti paint as he was weird!)

I had this with dulux paint, the kind they mix in the shop for you. It's far too thick.

I found that diluting the paint with water for both coats solved the problem.

I have a similar problem, although self made - I used silk instead of matt on two walls by mistake (had the wrong paint mixed).

This is what I am going to do (based on our local decorating centre's advice, good independent place). Lightly sand, which I was hoping to avoid, then use a primer like this one.

I did test painting matt over the top and it slipped off with my roller just like yours. Thankfully I only painted two walls before I realised my mistake. I was going to put it right this weekend but decided to wait until the Xmas hols are over as I didn't want the mess of sanding right now.

House is about 20 years old Blue and all the walls are the same.
Have finished for the day now. I am going to have a lovely hot shower climb into bed and watch tv.

Try a roller with a longer pile. Don't apply too much pressure.
Is your house quite newish? I say this as a friend of mine had the same problem as did all of her neighbours. It only affected certain walls and the stud walls were problem free.

bluecoconut just spoken to husband who says it sounds as if you have an oil based paint on , and you will need to use a primer first - sorry :(

Spindelina, I am just doing the first coat. As I am putting it on, if the roller goes over where I have just done it takes the paint off. Crossed wires I think.

Please don't say that agoodbook I normally like painting. I find it quite therapeutic. Not so today.

It may be the paint that was on- we had the same problem when we tried to paint in our bathroom- previous owners had used some strange paint, and nothing would stick to it - the decorator tried everything ( there is some special stuff you can get it seems) but in the end, we had to completely scrape it off. Hope you have better luck

was wondering if maybe the first coat needs to go on and dry almost as a base, before applying second coat.

This is the bit I'm confused by. From this sentence, it sounds like you are trying to put a second coat on before the first is properly dry. But nothing else you've said seems to suggest that, so it probably is just me getting confused!

Thanks all. I better get on as I am only halfway through applying first coat. It has taken me as long as doing all the prep.

I'm decorating at the moment and had the same trouble with the first coat. I think it's the temperature that's the problem. Second coat has evened everything up. I just had to literally slap it on, not go over it and wait till it had dried.

Maybe you just need a new roller OP. Glad to hear is going on better.
