Complete house make-over - help in deciding on colour and lighting schemes needed

House is being completely overhauled. We need to pin down some details in the coming weeks.

  1. Colours - it is not a huge house so we want the same colour scheme through out the house. I like lake colours and colour scheme 2 - which one do you like best? I think the first one is warmer perhaps?

We have settled on the tiles for hall, kitchen and bathrooms grey tiles bottom right but in 60x60, and wall tiles above for around bath/shower and behind sink. Rest of bathroom white.

Kitchen is white with granite worktops, contemporary style.

Living room white walls with solid oak flooring, still have this sofa but it will be replaced in a year or two.

Help me work out what colour and where to put it. Do I choose one wall in living room / dining room and make that the blue/green wall? And do I repeat that throughout the house?

Oh, and if anyone knows about lighting schemes, we could chat about that too

Go for it, Prettybird.

We were choosing radiators today. What a long time you can spend choosing something that you won't give a second glance to in 6 mths time

BTW MmeLindor, I am going to unashamedly use this thread for inspiration as our living room is needing brought up to date.

Prettybird that is so true for me too! And probably why I can't stand French farce!

I found out when studying French farce that you're supposed to find things like that funny 'cos you're glad it's not you. I don't - I identify with them and get upset on their behalf (like the Laurel and Hardy piano episode: it's just not fair !! Hmm). Confused

I'll leave the room if I think things are going to get embarassing.

I have to self-censor a lot. Even things like Monty Pythons I can't watch all of.

omg. I DO.

I have to turn off if too excruciating. Are you me?

So, do you get mortally embarrassed on behalf of characters in sitcoms? That's my other oddity quirk Blush

I still can't watch Dr Who.

There were children watching Jurassic Park and laughing at me

I did make it all the way through - but with a number of nail digging incidents and a couple of screams in an an otherwise silent cinema Blush

I now check out plots for potentially scary/thriller movies, so that I can decide whether I can go and reduce the fear factor Grin

The Doctor Who episode "Blink" absolutely terrified me. It's amazing how essential it can become to make a cup of tea. Wink

lolol Prettybird. Did you make it through the whole of Jurassic Park though?

I can't want Bond movies either, cause they are too thrilling for me. I get a sore tummy from all the tension.

MmeLindor - nothing to do with home decorating ideas, but I'm glad I've "met" someone else who is as wimpy as me about scary movies.

Dh still winces at the memory of my nails digging into his hands from when we went to see Jurassic Park.

And I've never seen "Jaws" and never will

Friends at Uni used to refuse to sit next to me in the TV room while we were watching the original series of Star TrekBlush as I would scare them by jumping when even not very scary things happened BlushBlush

cjel
I am looking forward to that. I am constantly moving stuff from here to there and back again

Slight setback here. The kitchen has come in WELL over budget, and not the quality we would have wanted. ARGH x 3000

I really dislike feature walls, I think they look out of date really quickly. Blush

Love it when a plan starts to come together. Have been here since August and have ripped out 2 bedrooms bathroom and kitchen/diner. New heating electrics, doors and windows. Cleaned yesterday and couldn't understand why it was so easy - there were no piles of 'stuff' to move from one rm to another and whole place looked like mine!! I'm sure the rest will be a doddle!! although if you are like me the cheap lighting/tiles/ fittings etc. won't be just 'quite' right and you'll just have to have the dear one or it just won't look good!!!

Good tip - all the walls are being papered and painted anyway so not really a problem.

Such fun. Spent DAYS agonising, comparing colours from several companies, sought expert advice on MN and Twitter.

Finally decided I want F&B Green Blue and Cornforth White and await arrival of husband to do battle.

He comes in. Takes one look, points
at aforementioned Green Blue and says, 'like that one in the middle best'.

He wasn't quite sold on C White till I showed him Spotty's blog. He loved the grey shades there so we are done.

Hurrah. Thanks all.

Now just have to sort out the lighting scheme, tiles, shower and bathroom fittings, kitchen and light switches.

We had a lot of problems finding the gold colour for our walls (which is actually a peachy colour but looks gold in our house). I saw a colour scheme in a magazine I loved and bought sample pots of it from BM. Painted them on the walls. The gold looked like primrose in parts of the house (exactly what I was trying to avoid) and the beautiful sagey green looked like prison grey. Yuck.

It took about ten to fifteen attempts for all the different colours but by then I'd wised up and instead of painting samples on the wall I painted a foam core board and moved it around the house. You might try that, it is a lot easier!

oh, spearmint must be nice and fresh.

Am thinking I might go for Dix Blue in the living room and [[http://www.farrow-ball.com/green-blue/colours/fcp-product/100084 Green blue in the kitchen.

The Cornforth White looks quite dark in the living room, but lighter in the hall which is actually a darker room. Might be because I have tested on the old anagypta paper?

I know what you mean about beige, I have added so much more colour in the kitchen this time. I have a beige and white bathroom in this haouse and have put in bright spearmint accessories!!

I am tired of beige-y colours as we have a beige couch, and have had beige in previous houses. That is a nice colour though

A few posts behind sorry... Wallpaper is Neisha Crosland. I love the greys greens and bluey hues. Grey is good because it goes with all the brights as well as muted colours. A pop of orange, pink or teal.

I foresee lots of posts from people asking Spotty where she bought X in her house.

Am now considering not installing a bath, to the horror of MN. Might ask on twitter, where not all of those asked will be parents of young kids.
