Summer learning loss

Now that school has broken up for our DC I'm starting to think about what to do about summer learning loss and how much we should insist they do over the summer holidays. Anyone else have a plan?

Mine have finished school now (as in left for employment/uni), however in primary up to around year 4 they had workbooks that I bought from the library to do a little of each day plus reading that we kept up as we liked it. I am sure that they still exist. It as never forced, just something that was done along with clubs, craft and days out during the long break. When we went on our holiday they didn't take them and if they didn't do them for a few days we didn't worry.

By the end of year 4 or 5 they were set something as project to do by school, or had their own plans ideas, however I have 2 DC that I have discovered enjoy studying.

I am by definition not a pushy parent, mine didn't get tutors to improve grades or to cram for SATS we kept it so low key that spellings were usually learnt the night before and homework done towards the end of the deadline. DD20 is 'proud' that she still can't do her times tables despite me buying her all sorts of aids to help and her teacher sending through her suggestions. She does have an A grade in GCSE maths despite this.

@Apple23

No it doesn’t it means they need to be more imaginative in their play, it’s good for children to be bored.

We spend every minute trying to occupy our children and we’ve forgotten it’s good for children to be bored and learn to occupy themselves.

Only boring people are bored

I would rather my children spent time in the outdoors, nature etc just relaxing or pottering about - playing with toys etc.

We spend the holidays visiting museums, art galleries etc along with playing sport.

Keep up the reading and I encourage mine to write a diary on what they did on the days we did something special e.g holiday, day in town etc and I might do some random times tables with DS1.

We will read. We will do nature stuff like building a camp or fire, using a compose, and map reading. She has magazines that she can read up on how to do these things.

We will read recipes , write shopping lists, shop and cook.

We will give her pocket money for spending time on Top Marks timetables website, which she can count up and spend.

Likely to get the microscope out, arts and crafts etc.

yr 5 and 6 here. will get them to read (never a problem in the holidays) and I want to get them to practice a little bit of maths. year 5 one because there are a couple of things not confident on from this year so would be helpful to get them sorted before starting year 6 to avoid a confident drop and year 6 one because they will sit maths tests at the start of year 7 so helpful to keep brain ticking over a bit (long time since they last did maths before the sats) and timestables occasional practice.

of course this is theoretically what I would like to do, in reality they probably won't do anything

We're doing the summer reading challenge at the library & I've bought some workbooks. I've got the year they've just finished so it's more of a re-cap.

Just had my DS6 yr2 report which shows he's a bit behind so will be doing lots of reading & fun maths games etc

DD10 & DS9 are both doing well but enjoy reading/workbooks etc.

We'll have plenty of beach/activity/fun days as well Smile

Summer is time for catching up with swimming and arts/drawing and chess and reading for mine. They are both away for the whole summer staying at my parents so I am hoping they will be improving in speaking/writing/listening in our native language. My 11 years old will be playing in couple of small local music events over there so hopefully a little bit of music.
