If DS likes reading Beast Quest, what else is he likely to enjoy?

DS, age 7, has really got into reading this year, and really likes Beast Quest, but we are up to number 42 now, and I am not sure my sanity will stand reading too many more with him, as they are all the same story repeated over and over again! I could really do with some suggestions of other books he might like please?

I'm reading Frogspell with my Y1s

Ds3 has just finished the Frogspell series by C J Busby and loved them. He also likes diary of a wimpy kid, Secret Seven and anything by Dick King Smith.

Tom Gates is really popular here, along with wimpy kid. I'm trying to get him into more literary books, so have bought httyd but he hasn't focused enough to read through to the end yet. Roald Dahl of course are also excellent.

My son sounds very similar. I second the Time Hunters books and now he has finished all 90 odd Beast Quest books he has started reading the Wings of Fire series wingsoffire.scholastic.com/. They are a bit meatier and my son is 9 now so they may not appeal yet but worth bearing in mind for the future.

Mad, what is the series called about the kids who live in a canal boat?

DS2 Likes BQ. Just recently read lots of Switch series books (got a pack from thebookpeople). Also Monster and Chips, and a series about London Zoo with children who live on a canal boat. today the Stink series arrived and he sat down and read 4 of them already!

DS1 (almost 7) likes Beast Quest - although thankfully he reads them to himself so I'm spared Grin

He also likes Tom Gates, and Flat Stanley, and there is some Terry Pratchett for young readers which is good also - a new one, not the older Diggers/Trucks/Wings which actually I should get out for him now probably.

I forgot to mention Horrid Henry! I dislike them intensely, but DD enjoyed them.

DD has enjoyed The Magic Treehouse series, famous five, secret seven, Jeremy Strong books, Mr Gum, David Walliams, Roald Dahl, Sam Silver undercover pirate, Oliver Moon, flat Stanley. She's read the first Harry Potter and is gearing up for the second this summer holiday.

Brilliant, loads of suggestions there to try out thanks. I am grateful to Beast Quest, as they have got him into reading for pleasure, but it would be so nice to find something a bit more varied!

Agree with lots of recommendations above plus DS aged 8 is currently really enjoying Time Hunters (Chris Blake) - only 12 of those I think so enough to get into it without too many to send you crazy!

My sons are 9 and 10 and read billions of beast quest books....
moved on to
how to train your dragon
harry potter
and the Artemis Fowl series by iown (sp?) Colfer.... which were mine before I had babies so good for adults and kids.
youngest is reading only the last few chapters of the hobbit to find out what happens in the 3rd film which isn't on netflix yet Grin
Older one gets a lot of practise in with his uncles old top gear magazines.

weebarra - the BQ books are written by a consortium of writers (I imagine no one could bear to write more than a couple!) - Adam Blade is their collective pen name.

There are brilliant audiobooks for both Mr Gum and HTTYD (David Tennant does amazing accents) - when DS was unsure of moving on to harder books, he gained confidence from having already listened to them.

Sodding Beast Quest! We're in Edinburgh and DS1 was asking if I thought the Beast Quest author would be at the Book Festival. I reckon he/she would be lynched! Although, anything that gets him reading and all that.
Good suggestions on this thread - DS1 also likes the HTTYD books but they are still a bit hard for him.

I'm enjoying Anthony Horowitz the Diamond Brothers detective agency series at the moment ( the Falcons Malteeser ???? public enemy number two ???? the French Confection ???? etc )

Astrosaurs, Cows in Action both series by Steve Cole

How to Train your Dragon is a big jump in reading difficulty from Beast Quest. My son loved them, but the vocabulary is challenging.

Agree with
How to Train your Dragon
Mr Gum

I'd also recommend
Captain Underpants
Wild Boy (Rob Lloyd Jones)
Maisie Hitchins detective series

My rule with BQ was that DS could read them, but not to me, and I would never read them to him. He's 10 now, and reads widely - some of it I would even class as literature - but he still loves a sneaky BQ.

I came to this thread to ask wtf Breast Quest was and why you were letting your son read it, but I see now that I misread!

How to train your dragon is popular here too.

Also, although not at all similar to Beast Quest, I would suggest the Tom Gates series, lots of cartoony bits so easy to read, but pretty funny (if you're 6-8)

aagh, the dreaded beast quest. Every single book is the same.

Secret Agent Jack Stalwart
Oliver Moon
Dinosaur Cove
Astrosaurs
Cows in Action
How to Train your Dragon
Mr Gum

Try Charlie Bone for an easier Harry Potter type story. DS2 loves them at the moment.

I'm also going to suggest the 'How To Train Your Dragon' series! DS used to be really really into BeastQuest, but it got to the stage where he'd get through one in a couple of hours, so he started looking for something more substantial. He really loves the humour of the HTTYD books!
Also, Secret Seven /Famous Five. He likes the adventure aspect, and I like the nostalgia of it all as I loved to read them when I was little.
I'm not sure if I'd want to start him on Harry Potter yet as the later books are quite dark and grim? Or is that just me being wussy?
FWIW there is sort of a follow series to BeastQuest by the same writer collective author, called "The Chronicles of Avantia", but it seems to be just as formulaic pretty much the same as BQ only aimed at slightly older children.
