Teacher says Dd doesn't do any work at school.

My 5 year old dd is in year one. She always loved school in foundation but she found the change to year one a little tricky, she's in a mixed group of year one and year two children.
Her teacher asks for a chat from time to time and says she doesn't do any of the work, says she's bright and when talking to her she's understood everything really well, she just doesn't write anything down. Teacher is worried how she will cope in year two. She also stalls a lot, taking 30 mins to change after PE and go to the loo, in an effort to miss work.
She struggled with letter formations and writing generally at first but can do it. There's a teaching assistant who helps her and one or two others. At home we have reasonable expectations of her, she is an only child and quite well behaved. She can be a bit whiny and puts things off like most 5 year olds!
I feel it's an attitude / motivation / laziness issue.
How can I get her to understand how important it is to work hard and try hard at school?
We've agreed that if she does some of the writing she's been asked to do, she can then draw a picture too, which she loves. We're hoping this will encourage her. Any thoughts or ideas or folk who may have been through this, please I'm starting to worry she's never going to get passed this.

Sorry forgot to put in link for Jolly Phonics workbooks: www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_18?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=jolly%20phonics%20workbooks%20books%201-7&sprefix=jolly%20phonics%20work%2Caps%2C247&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Ajolly%20phonics%20workbooks%20books%201-7&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21 - this is amazon - but they are also available from most large newsagents/ book shops.

The one thing I can say is that some children do just start slowly and can come good in the end. DD1 (as I said above) didn't do well at end KS1 (NC L1 across the board) but has sat all Level 6 papers for KS2 SATs this week. We don't actually expect her to achieve NC L6 - we know only a small percentage do nationally in England. But we're incredibly proud of her achievement and all the hard work she has put in over the last few years.

Can you have her checked for dyslexia/language disorder and her fine motor skills abilities.
Just to rule it out really.

fillie is your Dd bendy? It may just be that she has very flexible joints (all young Dc do to some extent, some more so than others) which may be a bit uncomfortable and tiring....not all Dc develop at the same rate.

If it's any consolation my Ds was the same at 5, he is now 9 and still has to stay in at break times, in the past he also had work sent home. We have since found out he is hypermobile which is why he avoided certain tasks especially writing long stories and PE (he knew it would hurt). Ds was/still is a very slow dresser and we have to constantly encourage him to do it in a reasonable amount of time, to most it would look like he is dawdling or CBA but in reality it takes him a lot of effort to do the smallest of tasks. The above punishments and other reasons (mainly a pompous CT who knew better than anyone else) really knocked his self esteem and at one point he hit rock bottom...he was 7! Angry

There is one thing I have always believed and that is ALL children want to please, so for a Dc to accept a punishment rather than complete a task it needs to be looked into IMO.

I'm glad your Dd is doing well, whatever the CT is doing seems to be helping. Keep an eye on when the unfinished work is sent home...maybe you will see a pattern..
