What time do you read the school's reading book with your reception child?

In the afternoon or at bedtime?

DD is very focused at reading in bed, but I thought actually she might be tired at that time so maybe it's not such a good idea, so today I tried reading this afternoon after a post-school snack, but she really didn't want to sit still.

Before school. She's too distracted when she comes home and at bedtime we like to read a story that we actually enjoy! Oh, she's yr1 not reception though.

We do it straight after school, then in the morning before school. In the after school slot, she knows she does her book then key words, then she can watch some telly to relax.

We only read stories at bedtime, I read them to her. If she read to me I think she would be to alert to sleep.

I never managed to read with either of my dc on a regular basis in yr r! DS was too tired all the time, only really got over this in yr 2. He used to fall asleep when I read to him so didn't really get that either. But we did read at weekends and in the holidays when he was not tired, school was helpful and gave us piles of books for every holiday. And DD was so anti reading I was scared to pressure her and put her off. She started reading in the summer holidays between yr r and yr 1, and then she generally read just before bedtime, after which I read her a story.

With DD1 (Reception) it's about 6pm - after dinner but before wind down/bath time. DD2 is 3 and gets to watch tv whilst DD1 and I are reading - we sit on the stairs so I can keep an ear out for DD2 but DD1 isn't distracted by the TV. We get books three times a week.

Then an hour later I'll read the bedtime story.

We do it right after school. After a wee and drink! He sometimes complains but at least it's out of the way then

Ds reads his school book after his snack after school, but over the holidays he started reading his own books to me at bed time before I read to him and he seems to want to continue with that too! I'm not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing...

We read at bedtime, he reads his school book (if he's tired we keep it to only a few pages but this is rarely a problem) then I / dad reads bedtime story (we are currently working our way through Road Dahl's Going Solo - DSs choice).
DS gets 2 reading books a week from school so to keep the habit up we read library books on the other days.
We've read at bedtime since he was a baby so he expects it now and it's a nice wind down from his hyper self for bedtime.
We only read in the daytime on weekends /holiday.

DS reads to me at around 4.30 on weekdays. On my long working days he reads to DH at bedtime or skips it altogether. At weekends, it is mainly in the morning - that is to say lunchtime.

At bedtime DH reads to him first, then me. This is the most important part of DS's routine. The only real punishment that makes him think is if we do not read to him at bedtime, but it is considered so harsh (by him and probably me as well) that I only dare to mete it out once or twice a year.

We are really struggling with this at the mo, DD is in year 1, and I am out of the house 8am-6pm four days a week. Finding time to read is really hard, which makes me feel like crap mum. Also have 3 year old who is really not into sitting and listening. And DD hates reading. Arrrrgh!

I think we're going to have to put more of an effort in at weekends.

I always found in the morning straight after breakfast worked best as they were awake and keen. After school was a disaster as too tired.

At bedtime. Dd reads her school book to us and we read Disney princess stories to her.

DD reads to me about half an hour after we get home from school or in the morning, it depends how tired she is.

Ragusa You are not a crap mum! My Mum and Dad never read to me at bedtime, as I was a boarder (not in a posh way, but school was too far). I still learnt to read easily and love reading. Mind you, we only started school after our 6th birthday. You are probably ready by that age.

I have my Reception dgs 2 days a week after school and he asks to read his book to me after he has had a snack and a bit of a play so maybe about 4.30ish.He often reads it again to one of his parents later. He always instigates the reading session but bedtime is wind down time and being read to.

We've always done it at bed time. DD will use any excuse to delay going to sleep, so it makes her very keen to keep reading for as long as possible!

Both kids read to themselves before bed (if they want to which they usually do).

We have a 20 minute bus ride to/from school so we do reading/phonics etc during that.

Morning tends to be best as she goes to after-school club and breakfast club and is therefore pretty tired by 6pm.

Am amazed how many of you make time in the morning, leaving the house on time is a struggle for us without trying to fit a phonics session in!

Reading keeps DD sitting down whilst I'm trying to brush her hair

It's the only part of the morning not filled with 'hurry up DD, put the toy away and get dressed... are you ready yet?... why is the toy back in your hand?... PUT YOUR CLOTHES ON!'
