How much PE does your KS2 child do a week?

I'm getting concerned about how little PE the school provides. dS in yr 5 reports 20 minutes indoor PE, which is country dancing and hardly energetic the way it's taught, this week and 25 minutes last week. No outdoor PE at all. When you consider that there is no afternoon break to run around either, I'm starting to understand why he comes out of school desperate to run around.

How much PE do other schools provide?

DD Y3. 3 x week. Swimming, hockey and netball. At moment. Will change to tennis and athletics in the summer. Also does gymnastics at lunchtime once a week.

technically 1 hour a week so long as any written work is complete, Ds's school is more focused on writing/spellings than anything else.

Thanks for all your replies, it does look as though poor DS is getting much less than average. I'll bring it up with a mum who is a governor, DS loves sports and little else at school, so it does seem a shame that he gets little opportunity to do the thing he loves. He does go to lots of clubs outside school, as there isn't much available through school, and we do walk to and from school. Well actually, now he is older and ok to wander about the village on his own, he runs to school and dd and I turn up 10 minutes later having walked.

Dd in yr 5 each week does a session of swimming, Tai chi, gymnastics, dance, Ozbox, rounders and netball. Not sure of the length of sessions but would imagine that they are at least thirty minutes to make the need for getting changed worthwhile so at least three hours per week. Her class do at least one session each day as sometimes she leaves her PE kit on for the whole morning because she has two sessions that day.

DS is supposed to do two sessions a week, one indoor and one outdoor. When weather stops the outdoor one it's down to one a week because the hall is already in use.

3 hours, plus 4.5 hours of school swim squad a week

My y5 ds does 2 sessions, probably about 45 mins each. Currently doing gymnastics (floor and apparatus stuff) one session, the other doing tag rugby outside.
Last term they were doing swimming for one of those sessions.

TheNebulousBoojum, that is what DD's school do - this half term it is/was hockey. Last half term it was dance and gymnastics. In addition to school PE/sport activities, DD also does gymnastics and swimming. We also go to our local farmpark every week for a couple of hours and she runs herself ragged there.

I also agree with children needing daily exercise - with DD and DS (5yo and 20mth), we put on some music every evening and have a good ole dance/run around. It is their favourite part of the day and absolutely free!

It would be nice if parents also ensured that their children got half an hour of vigorous exercise a day too, anything from skipping to brisk walking.
Nothing expensive.
Because I have children in class I can outdance and outrun and outwalk. Which is a bit sad for a woman in her 50s and a class of 11 year olds.

My lot:YR1, YR2 and YR6, do 2x1hour a week plus 1x1hour swimming. My eldest also does Sailing as an ECA and touch rugby. My YR6 is also in Scouts and my YR2 is in Beavers.

DD, 10 years, does two sessions a week, an hour each which includes changing time. The only time they don't go outside is when it's chucking it down.

Oh, and our school do lots of other clubs before and after school, and also lunchtimes, most are run by private providers. So DS1 (year 4) also does football, athletics, and multi sports at school. Then he does another 2 hours football per week, 1 hour of swimming, and around 3 hours of tennis. I think at that age they seem to need a huge amount of exercise!

I teach PE and our KS2 have 50 mins PE and 90 mins games every week and swimming once a fortnight. Outside whenever possible, but will depend on activity being covered in that block.

2 x 45min here too - one outdoor , one indoor - but it is still not enough for 2 healthy girls - they do a further 2 hours of karate, and one hour fitness/circuit training a week. Only one is in KS2 - Y6 now - the other Y7 where they get 2 hours a week - or rather 3 one week, one the next (timetable is run over a fortnight..)

2, 45 min lessons per week, one outdoor, one indoor and swimming every week for half an hour. ( Yr3 and Yr r) parents complain about the outdoor one, but I think its great they are getting fresh air and excersize, and they can wear tracksuits etc to keep warm.

Our PE is designed in blocks, so this half term might be gymnastics, then after half term it might be invasion games, hockey, or dance.
Two slots in the hall, around 50 mins each.

They are supposed to have two hours a week, including changing time.

DS (Y4) has 2 hours of scheduled PE but that includes changing.
1 hour is indoors and 1 hour outdoors. They do different sports/activities each half term.

DS is an Aug born birthday too Grin

Maybe it's something that summer borns do (be clumsy!!)

Report
Bunnyjo · 08/02/2013 23:17

Argh! Don't tell me that, simpson! DD is very articulate and is academically ahead of her peers (working at 2b/a level now in Yr1), but is a late August born so very young and physically less able. The HT jokes that she has her own accident book for DD... It's only going to end in disaster, isn't it?

Oh yes and I forgot, he does multi sports after school for an hour a week (done with the same external coach).

DS (yr3) has two 45 minute lessons a week and one of those is done by an external sports company who coach in football, hockey and get the kids playing dodgeball etc...

He also does the G&T PE (another 45 minute session per week) which out of 60 kids in the year there are 8 that do it.

Bunnyjo - DS split his chin open in a hockey lesson a few weeks ago, blood everywhere and I had to get him and take him to hosp

DD is Yr 1, but in a mixed class with Yr2 and Yr3 (Yr3 being KS2, obviously) kids. They do 2x1hr of PE every week, plus enrichment on Friday 1-3pm. Enrichment activities include football (taught by an ex-professional international and coach) and Forest Schools, which involve a lot of outdoor work. KS2 children also do swimming once a week.

DD says they are doing hockey twice a week during PE at the moment. I am trying not to imagine my 5yr old and very accident prone child and her classmates with a bunch of hockey sticks and hockey balls!
