Why is all the emphasis on literacy?

Dd has just finished her first half term in reception. Lots & lots of phonics, word games to play over half term & Now her first reading book. But I haven't heard a peep about numeracy at all. Is it just my perception - & the work sent home - that all the emphasis is on literacy, or is this indeed the case & if so what's the logic?

DS2 did a lot of maths from early on in reception - in school, it wasn't until the last term he started bringing home maths homework.
I went in during the first term and observed them doing a science lesson about reversible and irreversible reactions, DS didn't mention it at the end of the day when I asked him what he had done (until I asked him about it specifically then he knew all the terminology etc) so sometimes I think it is just that they don't tell you about stuff.
