School Musicals

Has anyone seen an amazing Primary school musical? We want to put one on, (mainly Y5/6) and want one with really catchy songs, a strong storyline (that is age appropriate) and some good (but not overly demanding) speaking roles! I would really appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

DS1 did an edited Matilda in Y3/4. Now Y5/6 and preparing for Guys and Dolls.

Joseph is brilliant but it's sung through.

I am volunteer with a children's musical theatre group we use this website for our musicals. Recently we have put on High School Musical, Beauty and the beast Jr and Camp Rock the musical which have all been great. We also did Fame Jr not easy and very samey music.

There are lots I hate that are often done at primary;

I hate;
Annie (stupidest story ever)
Grease (entirely inappropriate, and rubbish message for kids anyway)
Bugsy (annoying)

If you normally have a band, I like;
Wizard of Oz
Oliver
Godspell
Peter Pan
Charlotte's Web
Alice through the looking glass
Jungle Book

If you normally use a backing CD try;
Lion King
Aladdin
Beauty and the Beast

I don't think "Joseph" has any script - all songs, IIRC.

We did Alice the musical and the children loved it!!
We also did Wind in the Willows from out of the ark which went down very well!!

Bugsy Malone is always popular for obvious reasons. My ds1 did this 12 years ago and schools round here still do it, its classic Grin

Little Shop of Horror - omitting bad language.
Grease, also omitting language and some sex connotations, but that's script really.

I know this is a stupidly old thread but as it just came up in active I shall add that way way back in 1994 I did 'the 7 sided dice' as my year 6 leavers play.
I still know all the words after nearly 20 years now that is a good school musical.

Over the past few years we have done: Oliver (brilliant), Joseph (even more brilliant, as that was my daughters year), Bugsy Malone (fab with real working splurge guns), Toad of toad hall (wasn't too sure of this before I saw it but loved it), missed this one and this year my DD2 is doing Olivia which is a mix of Annie and Oliver from what I can gather. They have asked in previous years to do Grease but the teachers feel it is not right for a primary school production.

This is my DD2 last year so may have to sneak into next years performance....lol

My daughter has just been in Pirates Of The Curry Bean, too - hilariously funny show with crazy characters, a great story and the catchiest songs ever (seriously - we haven't stopped singing them!). It was a real hit with parents and children (and the teachers, I think!) Her school has done others by the same writer (Craig Hawes) including What A Knight and Ye Ha, all great shows that are really funny, entertaining and in my opinion perfect for the age range. Googled it and found the link below - hope it helps!

My daughter did A blast from the past, in Y6. Really catchy tunes and although it was a Y5/6 production it was especially appropriate for Y6 leavers. My dd played a nervous child about to be caned!!

Olivia! was very good indeed at our local school - lots of good songs for a variety of characters: you can do the Primary or Senior versions.

We're doing Alice the musical and whilst I had my reservations (children's choice by vote) it is starting to come together and look reasonably good. Some of the songs are erm interesting though!

Will try and convince them to do the pirate one next year I think.

'Body Rock' - a girl who hates learning biology goes on a tour of her body and meets all her organs. Sounds weird but it's brilliant.

Loads of catchy songs, laugh out loud lines and plenty of scope for everyone to have a part.

Our Year 5/6's have done it at least twice in the last 10 years Smile

My girl (y6) is the Wicked Witch of the West in her school production of the Wizard of Oz. best part by far! She doesnt have to sing - good job as she can't - and she gets to over act like mad!

The best my school did was The Rocky Monster show, but they are doing Pirates of the Curry Bean this year, so i will look forward to it now!!

Our school is doing Pirates Of The Curry Bean too :). I haven't seen it and probably won't (it's years 5 and 6 doing it and DD1 is in reception) but I was walking through the hall when they were having rehearsals and it looked quite good!
