I'm looking for an educationally informative but not explicit book for DD10 who has been asking the birds and the bees questions.

Recommendations appreciated!

Yikes. That's old! It's called sex for starters! Not the birds and bees. Usborne do good books. Ask at the local library? Dr Raj does a good book on puberty etc.

Mine had one called something like the girls rough guide to growing up.

That made me laugh because I'm quite young, lol! I didn't call it just sex because DD's questions have been about far more than that.

Thanks for your suggestions

We went with What's Happening to Me? which is recommended from age 9.

A Mighty Girl has some more recommendations here.

And I'd really recommend getting her a period starter kit. I've known more than one girl start their periods at age 9.

We got the Hey Girls! one.

The Dr Emily book is good (Peter Andres wife)

Surely they've covered this in school by now?

TedWilson · 18/02/2024 22:57

@Hoplolly they don't cover it in school until towards the end of year 6 meaning some are coming up to 12. Plus if they are the type who really don't want to know stuff like this they won't go looking for it! I had to sit my daughter down and tell her before they had the talk at school because I wanted her to hear it from me first even though I'm a big believer in if you ask me I'll tell you and not forcing things. But I didn't want her to be the only one in the class not already knowing when they had the talk!

At our school we teach periods in year 4 In RHSE and reproduction during science in year 5.... I thought this was the norm nowadays!

Hoplolly · 19/02/2024 07:30

Wow ours did it in Year 4 @TedWilson!

She is very late finding out the facts, as others said most schools would have covered a lot of it in school already. Especially with girls hitting puberty and getting their periods a lot earlier these days. Lots of good books on Amazon if advise having a peek at the reviews and you can usually get the jist of what is covered in the book there
