Any opticians here?! Or mums with experience. ‘Scar’ on back of eyeball?! Need advice..

Hello, my son (11) just had his first opticians appt because he was finding the white board a bit blurry when sat at back of classroom. When the optician took the photos of his eyes they pointed out what they called a ‘scar’ on the back of his eyeball. Obviously I’m now catastrophising 🙄 it was just a small round dot. I asked another optician in the reception after and he said it could be a mole. They’ve called him back in 6 months to check on it. How could an 11yr old have a scar on back of eyeball?! Can anyone give some professional advice, or any mums whose kids have had similar? Thanks in advance x

I've got one! For years they thought it was some sort of injury, as it was first spotted after an accident, now the equipment is better they have identified it as a birthmark.

Sounds like it could be a chorionic naevus; like pps have said, a freckle on the chorion of the eye. About 1 in 10 people have them and they just need monitoring at your annual eye test to check they’re not growing.

My DS has a mole at the back of his eyeball. They're not concerned, just said to continue annual check ups, and recommended he wears sunnies when outside as part of his general UV protection. We're in Australia though.

I have scaring in one eye from shingles, has caused minimal issues (difficult seeing at night in that eye and occasional dry eye). Agree with pp opticians and really quick at referral to opthalmology so if they are saying wait It would reassure me. Just make sure dc tells you if has any other symptoms/ changes.

I have this on the back of my eyeball knowingly for the last 40 years. It was once photographed and they just check it hasn’t grown when my eyes are tested, but it has always been fine.

It's nothing to be concerned about, keep doing the check ups as advised and try to set it aside for now. Opticians are usually really quick to refer to opthamologists if they have any concerns at all. I have messed up eyes and have been referred multiple times over my lifetime.

I have some scarring which was discovered when I was young and has never had any impact of my vision. The colabomas, astigmatism, detached retina, cataracts...... have done a number on my vision but none of that was related to the scarring.

Hi my daughter had what was described as a freckle on her retina spotted by an optician. She was referred to the hospital where an ophthalmologist examined and confirmed that it was a freckle and nothing else needed doing. Sounds like your son might have the same. Could you request a referral?
