Seeking Advice on the Right Preschool/Primary Cambridgeshire

Hello everyone,
I'm reaching out for some guidance on selecting a preschool (and potentially a primary school) for our child, as we're relatively new to the UK and are navigating the education system here. We have several options and are struggling to make a decision. Any insights, experiences, or general advice on choosing between public and private education would be greatly appreciated.

Option 1: A good preschool and primary school in our Houghton village, just a 5-minute walk from our home. It seems reputable, but some parents have recently moved their children to private schools, which raises questions for us.

Option 2: Whitehall School in Somersham, a private school. It would mean a 20-25 minute drive each way and additional costs.

Option 3: Kimbolton, a larger school with mixed reviews. We are curious about its educational approach and how well it might suit our child.

Option 4 (Radical Option): Considering our daughter's keen interest in learning and her active involvement in sports, we are open to finding an outstanding preschool and primary school (public or private), even if it means relocating. She's shown great focus and determination in her studies and activities, and we want to support her passions in the best way possible.

Option 5: With the prospect of possibly having a second child in the future, the financial burden of private schooling is a significant consideration. We're wondering if it might be wiser to save money now and focus on relocating to an area with good public/private secondary schools, without putting too much emphasis on the primary education phase.

We are particularly interested in the quality of education, opportunities for sports and extracurricular activities, and the overall environment of these schools. How do these schools support a child's individual interests and talents? Are there significant differences in the approach to learning and child development between these options?

Any advice from parents who've been in similar situations, or who have knowledge of these schools or the UK education system, would be so helpful! Thank you in advance for your help!

Best regards, Alina

To me this seems partly a state v. private school question. People leaving your local school for private doesn't necessarily mean your local school is bad, just they want something different. Realistically most state schools won't offer the same level of sport etc as private schools. You can opt for your local state school and supplement with external clubs as desired or you can aim for a private school where more is (usually) offered on site, so less ferrying around to clubs but more commuting to school, and obviously more expensive.

Personally I would look to start with your local school: view it, chat to parents with older kids. Then look at other options and compare them. You then have to decide if the private options are worth it (money and travel) for you. Many choose to do state until 7 or 11 and then switch to private. Many more stick with state throughout of course.

Hopefully you will get other replies with more local knowledge.
