Feel the need to lie down after seeing the price of prams

Oh I am shocked at the price of prams - is it just me or am I being a scrooge ?

Feel free to be honest.

But what I really would like to know is where the pram thread is I know there is one but am being a bit dense and can't seem to find it any links appreciated, as I am after some advice.

My 2 favourites at the moment are the M&P's Skate and the Ziko Herbie if anyone has any info on these good and bad.

Thanks lovely mumsnetters.

sorry, DS1 interupted me... Was going to say that we got a pramette for DS1 and have used it for DS3 too - fab as parent-facing and can be flat for baby/sleepy toddler or raised as a pushchair very easily.

(whispers that I have never bought a mclaren as don't like them...)

If you search on ebay for 'sleepybuys' you can get an exact Pliko for £100 which is pretty good bargain

I am a little bit envious that your husband is actually interested in the pram.

Thanks for all the help - I will locate the Pushchair shed and post there tomorrow after I have done intensive research on ebay tonight.
The Maclaren one you mention with carrycot is the one my dh is after at the moment and it will be a winter baby but that's a good tip about making it warmer.

My husband tried to persuade me that if he can make do with a second hand car, then our baby can cope with a second hand pram!

He didn't win that arguement, but I did save £70 by buying the pram I wanted in last season's colours. Poor child, what will the other babies think? ;)

Ive got a mamas and papas mpx system and a mamas and papas pramette and a maclaren techno xt ,all sitting in the loft ready for this one to arrive and i only paid £150 for all three together ,two from ebay and one from the charity shop . Keep looking ,as you do get bargains on ebay ,especially if they have advertised badly .

The dazzles are fab, sold mine for 65 (though it was to another mn so lower price than on ebay).

OP is you are anywhere in the south west I have a gorgous silver cross pram converts to pushchair for sale I have another MN after it for cheap price but I can't get a big enough box to courier it to her so it's on ebay.

You can always put a wanted up on for sale thread when you know what you want.

a macalren xlr is a good buggy for a newborn, you can actually buy a carrycot for it now, but i should imagine that defeats the object of a quick and easy buggy to fold for public transport as it can;t be folded with it on.
but the xlr is nicely padded and has an apron/boot thingy to make it snug and if a winter baby i would prob use a nicely padded footmuff as well to keep baby snug and toasty.
or a silvercross dazzle, i had one of these for dd and it was fab, has a loverly fabric carrycot as well for the first few months and i have seen reconditioned ones on ebay for £125 with carrycot!

If you do get a stroller and want to cosy it up a bit for a newborn, get a sheepskin liner.

I have a Bowron one - off Ebay for £30 new, and it's gorgeous.

icandy cherry
This is what I have and DS2 is 2 in september and still using it.
Can face both ways, very lightweight, takes maxicosi car seat and IIRC costs around £180 without cosytoes.
Happy hunting, it's a minefield, isnt it?

It really does depend on what your needs are. The pushchair thread you were asking about is called the pushchair thread, under products and it is coming up to a year now that we have been posting (we really really love our prams!!)

I've spent out a fortune on prams, bought my bugaboo full price as I walk miles and miles and miles and sold it 2 years later for just over 400 so really worth it for me and what I needed it for. Then other makes sell for peanuts so you really can get bargains, particularly is you look under ebay for 'pcik up only' in your local area as they always go for less.

If you use the car everywhere soemthing easy to fold and chuck in the back is brill - second maclaren xt it's brill for that provided you feel ok with a newborn in a 'buggy' and that doesn't face you.

I'm going for an Emmaljunga pram as I do loads of walking with 2 big dogs. Definately will be getting it from Gumtree/Ebay. Will probably spend money on a nice new McLaren buggy for the spring and the baby is a few months old.

if you get a really decent one, then it will be worth the money. We had a Britax which has lasted 3 children and a lot of walking. It was about £300 8 years ago with a car seat as well and was used pretty much very day until it fimmaly gave up the ghost a couple of months ago.

Have a good think about what you need it for - walking lots, folding up in the car, public transport etc and look at loads and try them out (preferably with a borrowed baby) - then go online and try to find the cheapest option

We went to Kiddicare, had a good browse, then came home and I surfed! Ebay is definitely the way forward and if you do it in advance then you have more chance of getting what you want I was a bit concerned I may be jumping the gun a little, but knew I would be able to sell the pram if things did not pan out!!!

Well it's def ebay for me - sadly can't get to any of the Mama and Papas warehouses. DH's choice is a Maclaren fullstop - he hated the Buzz so much and was so happy with the Maclaren.

We got the Quinny Buzz3 which is great, bought it from a friend who had finished using it with her two and it saved us a packet. Don't know if you have any friends who may be wanting to sell anything? We had been looking on ebay and things are definately cheaper on there, plus things like the carry cot attachment, which you will only use for 2-3 months tops are much cheaper. It's so easy to get carried away (don't know if this is your first baby), but I found it was worth while getting advice from friends with kids and asking what I'd need in the "real world" rather than what you think you should get.

I was very pleased we had a carrycot for DS when he was a newborn, although we only used it for about 3.5 or 4 months.

We are probably going to get a Phil and Teds for when DS2 gets here. They are really expensive but looking on ebay the resale is astoundingly good if you keep it in good nick, so if we buy new, get a couple of years use out of it then sell for a good price the overall cost to us will hopefully be pretty small.

We had a Buzz for DS, which we are going to sell, again hopefully for a reasonable price, having done some ebay research, to help fund the P&T.

AtheneNoctua · 30/07/2009 12:07

Never had a carry cot. I couldn't justify that kind of money for something I was going to use for a few weeks.

If you want to take this pram on public transportation I would suggest you get the one with the narrowest rear wheelbase. I think Maclaren won out on that feature 4 years ago. But, ther might be another one now.

timmette · 30/07/2009 11:34

Well I live in the city so I guess that points towards a cheaper pram, my ds was out of his pram at 2 and refused to get back in - so if this one is the same I will only get 2 years use out of it.
What about my mils insistance that we need a carry cot - any advice on this as I think this is also leading me towards more expensive ones.

I spent about £300 on mine for my last baby and thought that was enough. I still use it at 8.5 months and intend to for at least 2 years so hope will be worth it as I walk everywhere. No way would I spend £600 as many people do, each to their own. I also used second hand for some of my older kids and they were fine.
