Weight gain

I'm due on Friday. Weighed myself the weekend to see what I've put on. I've put on one stone and 2lb which doesn't seem a lot. What has everyone else gained? Does this mean my baby will be small?

With DD I put on about 1 1/2-2 stone. She was 8lb 2oz, I didn't lose all the baby weight after, not a problem though.

With DS, I put on about 13lbs. He was 11lb 7oz born and by the time the was 3 months old I was about a stone under my pre-pregnancy weight.

Both babies perfectly healthy.

Weight gain is generally no indicator of how your pregnancy is going which is why you're not routinely weighed at antenatal appointments.

A lack of labour signs is neither here nor there either. Things can change very quickly.

I'm 28 weeks and have lost about a kilo. I was weighed at 70kg (BMI 26) at my booking appointment and currently weigh slightly over 69kg.

I had quite an unhealthy lifestyle before I got pregnant and was slightly overweight. Cutting out copious amounts of alcohol combined with 3 months of nausea early in the pregnancy has meant the weight has dropped off me.

Not sure at what point I should start being concerned if I don't start putting any on?

It depends on the pregnancy (eg some people just carry more water than others) and the weight you were before you got pg.

I was told that if you had a "normal" BMI before you were pg then a "normal" weight gain by the end would be 25 - 35lb. I guess that's just a rough guide though.

With my last pregnancy I started off with a BMI of 20 and gained about 2.5 stone. Am currently 36 + 3 and have gained about 17lb so far.

It's really not a time to worry about weight and/or worry about how fast you'll be back in your skinny jeans. As long as you're eating healthily all will be ok.

I have put on 7lb so far but I'm only 16+4... I know I was over weight before I got pregnant, I weighed 10stone 7 and I'm only 5ft3... but I'm trying not to worry about it. I walk lots and I've started pilates and will also start aquafit soon. I eat when I'm hungry and I do eat sweet treats regularly, but aside from that I eat 3 normal meals. I know I may have to work hard to get rid of weight afterwards but as long as the baby is ok that's all I care about. There is so much pressure to get pre baby bodies back in the media etc, being healthy to me is all that counts.

I think a reasonable amount of it is put of your control. I weighed 75kg bmi 22.6 when I got pregnant. I lift big weights and sprint so bodywork fat was stupidly low and I was a size 8-10. Put 7kg on in first 26 weeks. Last week aline I put 6kg on despite being unable to eat due to aspirin induced nausea. It's all water. In 2 of my three previous pregnancies I dumped the gained weight within a few weeks of stopping bf ing, in one I had to totally reinvent my nutrition and exercise plan. I had planned to put no more than 15kg on by term as I have some big sporting events to do in spring. With last week's gain I've already done it and have weeks and weeks to go. It sucks, but that's life

Hi all,

I'm 37 weeks today and weigh less now than the day I found out I was pregnant.

I'm SUPER proud of this.

Throughout my life I've struggled with weight and when I got pregnant EVERYONE I encountered advised me not to put weight on/that I was high risk/bmi too high/putting babies health at risk etc etc.

They even sent a 'Healthy Mums' specialist round to weigh me every 3 weeks who advised me I was only allowed to put on between 14-21lbs the whole pregnancy. I sacked her off as when I asked her a few basic nutrition questions she didn't have a clue!

I then got diagnosed with borderline Gestational Diabetes so had to change my diet - eat less sugary food - which I did and lost 8lb in first two weeks.

I've felt so well throughout but the weight has stayed off. This isn't me bragging - I just want to say that it doesn't necessarily mean if you're big you'll put weight on. Baby measuring around 6lb at the mo according to scans etc and midwifes and docs are all really pleased that I've managed my diet. But to be honest I've not changed that much! Just it drinking obvs so I guess that shows I prob got most of my calories from drinking before! Confused xx

That sounds fine and normal and much easier for you. I have had 4 children and am normally a slim size 10, but find I cannot help gaining about 3 stone when pregnant. For me it's a mixture of hormonal hunger, exhaustion and nausea and I just eat too much and exercise less. I have lost all the weight each time but had to work hard to do it, so I'd love to have gained less. At the end of the day though it's an amazing thing to grow a baby and nourish a baby with your body and weight gain or no weight gain it's a healthy baby that everyone hopes for.

I put on 2.5 stone at 37 weeks and had a 5lb 3oz baby. My pre pregnancy BMI was 17.5 and I constantly got told I wasn't gaining enough, even though I had HG and was forcing full fat milkshakes and fatty food down to try to keep some calories in. Now 4 months later I've lost it all and back in my normal clothes.

A lot of it depends on your weight before and body type.

As long as the midwife isn't concerned then just try not to worry too much about it.

Good luck with your baby, hopefully you'll go into labour soon.

Lose weight not floss weight?!?

Oh god I just weighed myself and I have put on 2 stone at 27 weeks. I'm actually worried about diabetes or something cos it seems like a huge amount Blush

Is anyone doing any kind of healthy eating plan/diet while pregnant?

I was only a size 10, about 24 bmi before I got pregnant and had just lost about 5 pounds. It takes me ages to floss weight too so I'm not looking forward to that after the birth Sad

I weighed the same at birth as at conception with dd1 who was 8lb when born at 39+4, then I lost a little over a stone from conception to birth with dd2 who was 8lb7oz when she was born at 37 weeks.
My cousins girlfriend gained around 2.5 stone and her baby was 5lb4oz.
Everyone is different, as long as you have been eating properly and midwife isn't worried about baby then you shouldn't either. From my experience weight gain/loss isn't an accurate indication of babies size.

Congratulations on your impending arrival :)

I gained 12lb in my pregnancy and my baby was 6lb 7oz at birth. I only measured 30 weeks when I was actually 37 weeks gone.
And I could wear my pre pregnancy jeans within a month of giving birth, and my stomach was almost flat within a week.
I was so lucky

I'd put on about 8lb by 6 months pregnant. Full term now and I've put on 17 in total.

I've just been told off by midwife because I've put on 13kg and I'm only 28 weeks. I was only a size 10 before I got pregnant. I didn't think I'd been over eating or anything. Oops

I only put on 1.5st in last pregnancy. DD was 6lb8.5 I'm 21wks this time and haven't gained anything yet but started the pregnancy 2st overweight. I'm hoping to keep gain under 1st. I think a lot depends on how much water you retain.

Yeah I mean my mother in law said she put on 3 stone with all of hers so I have done well. I was a size 12 before pregnancy. Now I'm a 14 but for comfort I'll wear a 16. It looks like most of my weight has gone to my boobs and bump tbh. Lol. They've estimated she'll be between 6lb10 and 7lb 5 so only time will tell. But I'm due Friday and literally no signs of imminent labour which makes me super sad lol

I'm just a tad jealous Gabby, wish I had put that amount on, but I agree with chocolate, it doesn't matter what you have put on in weight in terms of baby's size- with all of my pregnancy's I have put on 5 stone Shock- I wasn't big to begin with, I just seem to pile it all on!

My son was 9lb 13oz, at 40+10, my daughter was 8lb 8oz at 40+2. I had a growth scan this time round and they expect she will be between 8-9lb if on time Blush - but they can be wrong about that.

Midwifes didn't seem overly concerned about my weight gain, I was tested for Gestational diabetes and all clear, in fact my mw said she put on 6 stone with her first, so I didn't feel too bad. As long as baby's healthy that's the main thing :)
