anyone had extreme, debilitating nausea but no sickness?

at 12 weeks i'm starting to feel better but i have been really suffering since 5 weeks. i felt constantly, horribly nauseous and so dizzy, it was 24/7 and exhausting. the room would spin if i stood up and i couldn't do anything, signed off work etc.

the thing is that i find it very hard to describe to people who haven't experienced it, as people know how badly some women suffer with HG but often haven't heard of how difficult it can be to have what i've had- nausea but no sickness.

if you say morning sickness people think actual sickness, and if you say you weren't sick just nauseous it somehow sounds like you could have gone on with life, feeing a bit bleuch- i really couldn't have gone on with normal life!

i find it really difficult to not have the understanding of what i've been through- can anyone relate to this?

skipton! That's how I've described it to dh too pretty much! Like having a really bad hangover combined with flu. He really doesn't get it though. When I say oh my god I can't move or I will throw up and can he do something for me, he grunts and whinges and it seems an inconvenience to him! Last week was his birthday and he couldnt stay out and have a few beers as I needed to go home and lie down. I'm sure he resents me for spoiling his day. I was like for goodness sake, you're 37, who cares, it wasn't an important birthday! Remind me why I'm carrying his child again?? Bah!

I am so glad I have read this thread, but sorry to all those currently suffering. I am 8 weeks and feel nauseous all the time, but haven't actually vomited. (I actually just ran to the loo heaving but nothing!) I wish I could be sick as it might make me feel better, but probably not! I am off work sick and feel really guilty but don't know how I would manage the train journey. I can definitely relate to the food aversion and weight loss. I don't want to eat anything but I know that isn't going to help.

Roll on the second trimester!

It is awful. I had extreme nausea and vomiting for about eight weeks at the start and honestly, the nausea was far worse than the vomiting. I couldn't look at anything that moved, could barely lift my head etc. didn't dare take time off work (boss has previous for sacking folk who are preggers or need to adjust work for family.)

I did get prescribed various drugs. None really worked, but they did reduce it a bit. Don't avoid going to your doc because you're not puking - extreme nausea is debilitating. Now I'm four months and still experiencing the nausea and I find the drugs help a little more (the nausea isn't anywhere as bad as previously.)

I really feel for you. I explained it to the husband thus....

"Remember that bout of Noro you had this winter? Now add that to the hangover you had after your stag do. Now add in the flu you had last year. Now imagine you're having them all on that really rough ferry crossing we had up to Orkney. Okay? That's how I feel and have felt for eight weeks."

I found that any smells at all made it worse. The Dh was really great - he made sure the bin went out twice a day and brought me fluids as needed. I'd TELL your hubby to do similar! You're the one suffering, he can support you by doing these things.

Hope it eases up for you. It is tough!

Hi all!

I started with the nausea at 5+4. Ive only been sick once (am 8+3 now) at 6w. Work has been hard. I work in a stuffy lab full of smells and I need to keep popping out to my locker for a cracker and to stick my head out of the toilet window for some air!

stoan I totally sympathise with the drinking thing, any more than 3 sips of water at a time I feel like its all stuck at the top of my throat. I do find fruit juice easier than water though.

Hope we all start feeling better soon! And yes, its like one long all day hangover isn't it?! I gave binge drinking up in my 20's so as not to feel like this and 'waste a day'! Oh the irony!

Thank you all for this thread - I needed to read this and it spurred me on to make a Doctor's appointment.

At 14 weeks, the nausea has been getting steadily worse for the last month to the point where I struggle to get to work. I've piled on weight because all I can eat is plain, processed carbs and they in turn make me feel a bit rubbish. I spend all my free time lying as still as possible on the sofa. The final straw came when I couldn't even stomach water - being dehydrated can't be good for me or the baby.

I've found people to be really unsympathetic, because I'm not being sick. Even my Mum told me not to waste the Doctor's time since I'm not actually throwing up. Very helpful!

At 6 weeks - mine started a week ago and is horrible. I've never felt like I'm going to be sick just a general nausea and absolutely no appetite.

Has anyone else been completely spaced out and unable to concentrate? I'm really tired, but even when I'm not feeling too badd I find myself just staring at my computer screen and not able to focus on anything :(

Sory to hear you're also suffering Donnakim, hope you get some relief from the sea bands. Don't feel bad about going to the GP if it feels unmanageable though, the nausea is so debilitating.

I'm five weeks now and the nausea has set in with avengence. This is our first so I had no idea what to expect. Luckily we had both taken this week off work so I can lie around and feel as sorry for myself as I want, but I'm starting to worry about how I will cope when I go back to work next week. I had planned not letting anyone know at work until I was at least twelve weeks but that may not work if I stay like this. MIL seems to have been right with her advice on keeping digestive biccies on hand, and I've just ordered seabands!

AmberLav, I hope your holiday goes well and the nausea stays at bay for you. I think I spoke too soon as I've started vomitting as well today, haven't been able to get up and feel completely fed up and frustrated.

I've have horrible nausea with both my first two, and I've just hit 7 weeks with my third, and I'm feeling it again! Not been sick yet, but that's partly as I know that with MS, being sick doesn't help, it just makes your stomach emptier and exacerbates the dizziness, so I fight it...

I would say that my least favourite bit of the whole baby thing is the first trimester - giving birth is a breeze by comparison, and even a newborn is easier to cope with!

I actually find I'm better if I do my best to crack on with things, and thankfully DH is very supportive - with my second pregnancy, we found out we were pregnant just after we had agreed the date to start building work, so at about week 8 to week 13, we all moved in with my lovely in-laws, but their house just holds onto food smells! It was great having additional help with DS, but I was sick so much more over there than I think I'd have been at home!

We're going on holiday to Scotland in 3 weeks, and I've worked out that I do not have enough time to take any sick days... I started the sea bands earlier this time, so hopefully that will take the edge off enough to help me function...

It all sucks!

newbian, sorry to hear you've been suffering also. Had it eased up at all yet? Have you been prescribed anything to try and ease it at all?

dasza79 so sorry to hear you're suffering too. You are definitely not lazy, I have barely been able to function this week, it is so debilitating. Are you on any medication? I think I'm going to have to try and go back to the GP to see if there is anything else I can take :-(.

I had terrible nausea and food aversion for weeks but did not throw up once. My mother was the same so guess it runs in the family. I'm 13+6 now and haven't gained any weight since BFP - which is an improvement as a few weeks ago I was down several pounds.

Same here...
It's awful, isn't it? Did not experience anything like that in my previous pregnancy.
As I don't work on some days I find it extremely difficult to perform the daily functions - dishes, dinner and such like. I'm meant to be revising for my last degree exams - find it impossible at the moment :-( The constant question in my mind is whether I'm just lazy and should not just get over it.
The worst - it started half way through holidays in Egypt. Now mere mention of a pyramid makes me feel sick.
I'd rather glow.

I'm 10 weeks and suffering with 24/7 nausea as well. I had HG in my last pregnancy and was admitted to hospital on numerous occasions, but once on the right medication seemed to get it under control. Bi have been prescribed cyclizine this item but it does not seem to be helping with the nausea. Please can I ask what meds have worked for you for the nausea?

rosey sounds AWFUL can't believe you managed to work like that

knitfast hang on in there. so glad your dh is being understanding. it must be weird for them too.. i know what you mean, you never imagine just how bad it can be. when you have a newborn yes you'll be exhausted but you won't have this awful nausea, you really won't, so it will be completely different. (and amazing Smile)

24hour I'm sorry your h doesn't get it - mine was a bit sceptical at first but he's seen just how ill and weak I am and is now being amazing. I honestly had no idea it could be this bad without actually requiring hospitalisation and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!

I know what pp mean about it never ending - I can't really remember what it was like NOT to feel like this Sad And so when I imagine having my baby, I imagine feeling like this, but having to cope with a newborn - and although I know that's u likely it shares the hell out of me

Me too with both. Horrible nausea like the worlds worst hangover if I wasn't constantly eating. Work was hellish. In a teacher so couldn't snack in the class. I remember thinking I was going to pass out at my desk and the kids all asking if I was ok.

it's so reassuring to hear others have been through similar (though i'm so sorry you've all suffered like this).

24hour and knitfast so sorry to hear you're going through it now. i hope you are ok, just take one day at a time and i promise it will get better. i remember one thing i had was a major fear that it would never get better, as it was so gripping and relentless, i knew logically that was mad but it felt like that was my world forever.

superworm the having to lie down and not being able to work or function totally sounds like me, though my goodness i'm horrified it went on until 32 weeks. that sounds awful and so unlucky, so sorry for you.

i think for most people no matter how AWFUL it is it does usually get better after the first trimester. hold on to that thought ladies. x

I had this. Awful, awful nausea I just had to lay as still as possible from 6-12 weeks, couldn't work or function. It continued until up until 32 weeks when it magically disappeared. I didn't vomit once but used to heave all the time, it was grim. Had totally put me off doing it again!

8 weeks here - it's fecking awful isn't it? Currently on my third week signed off work, downing phenargen like life depends on it and rushing I could be put in a medically induced coma until the middle of the second trimester Grin
I was actually sick today and felt strangely validated - it's so hard to convey just how awful relentless nausea is!
