I've just found out I'm pregnant again after an early mc last month. The month before I think I had a chemical. Before that we had been trying for 9 months. As a result (and because I am a fairly anxious person) I am paranoid that this one isn't going to stick either. I have been testing daily and checking my breasts constantly in case the tenderness disappears. That`s what happened last time. Has anyone got any advice? I think I may go private and have a scan at 8 weeks. Has anyone else done this?

GaryWilmotsWedding - Ultrasound does not cause miscarriages.. enough of them are done that if there was a correlation it would have been picked up on by now! I've not looked into it personally but some people say there is research that high numbers of ultrasounds can be linked to autism, but then other people tend to refute that research by pointing out inconsistencies in it. It's probably not ideal to have dozens of them unless you really need them, but one or two in the first trimester is extremely unlikely indeed to make any difference to the baby.
Some people do see losses after seeing a heartbeat earlier on, unfortunately that's just statistics at work. The odds improve dramatically if you see a heartbeat and an embryo measuring correctly, but not all babies with a heartbeat make it to 12 weeks. The period up to 10 weeks or so is when an embryo is developing into a foetus, all the vital parts are being made, so unsurprisingly most losses occur then because there's far more things to go wrong. Generally it's said that if you see a healthy baby at a scan at 10 weeks then the odds are the same as at 12 weeks, and a healthy baby at 8 weeks isn't far off. It's just the bit before 8 weeks that can be a bit dicey, heartbeat or not.
If you can get two scans, do one at 6 and 8 weeks - otherwise if you are only doing one and want longer term peace of mind I'd suggest holding on until 8 weeks. Bleeding is totally normal around this time unfortunately for some healthy pregnancies - scares us half to death! Good luck!

I just had one done on Sunday at 6+3. I would undoubtedly qualify for one on the NHS as I have had three first trimester losses, and I spot constantly, but I prefer private scans for that first one. For starters, they're not in a rush, they let you see the screen (the NHS ones I've had, it's often awkward to see or they don't let you see it until they know what's going on) and you can ask as many detailed questions as you like and they'll answer them. Some NHS sonographers will too, but plenty won't and just want you out the door so they can move onto the next patient.
Plus private scans are often more thorough - e.g. likely position of placenta, actual heartbeat speed (as opposed to "present") and they'll answer questions like "So is the yolk sac too big?" right away - most NHS sonographers don't know about a lot of these things as they're just on rotation or whatever and have no particular interest in early pregnancy, and the nurse practitioners I always saw afterwards didn't know either and would just drone on "we saw a heartbeat.." but I know from bitter experience that there is a lot more to it than that even if a heartbeat is a fabulous start.
I suppose a lot depends on the private clinic you choose - I used to go to one with a highly qualified midwife (£90) and now I've moved I had one done with a proper consultant (£110). Money well spent for sanity!
I certainly don't begrudge the NHS not providing as detailed a service, they don't have the resources to do more, and what they do do is absolutely fine for most people. I'm just one of those people who has been through a lot, learned a lot as a result and so wants to know everything.

The one near where i live does do a quick gender scan though from 18 weeks for £39 so i might have to think about that if the nhs make me wait until 20 weeks

Im glad dh is happy about it aswell. I had a quick look and its just the one place. If i could het one for £50 i would definately do it. £100 is just a bit too much. And dh says to just wait until my normal scan. I would be due it not long after our holiday in september so at least that might take my mind off it for a while. And my other symptoms are still there.
Let us know how they go those of you that are having them

Mine is £50 and I'm in Leicestershire. The Company look really good and they offer loads of different packages etc - I'm being restrained though and just sticking to a reassurance scan for now
