8 week scan - would you?

I've just found out I'm pregnant again after an early mc last month. The month before I think I had a chemical. Before that we had been trying for 9 months. As a result (and because I am a fairly anxious person) I am paranoid that this one isn't going to stick either. I have been testing daily and checking my breasts constantly in case the tenderness disappears. That`s what happened last time. Has anyone got any advice? I think I may go private and have a scan at 8 weeks. Has anyone else done this?

garygilmotswedding I wish you luck if you decide to go ahead, I don't have a history of past pg's to compare my scan with though.
Thank you for the happy remarks Smile

Hurray, congratulations littleABI! Grin

GaryWilmotsWedding - Ultrasound does not cause miscarriages.. enough of them are done that if there was a correlation it would have been picked up on by now! I've not looked into it personally but some people say there is research that high numbers of ultrasounds can be linked to autism, but then other people tend to refute that research by pointing out inconsistencies in it. It's probably not ideal to have dozens of them unless you really need them, but one or two in the first trimester is extremely unlikely indeed to make any difference to the baby.

Some people do see losses after seeing a heartbeat earlier on, unfortunately that's just statistics at work. The odds improve dramatically if you see a heartbeat and an embryo measuring correctly, but not all babies with a heartbeat make it to 12 weeks. The period up to 10 weeks or so is when an embryo is developing into a foetus, all the vital parts are being made, so unsurprisingly most losses occur then because there's far more things to go wrong. Generally it's said that if you see a healthy baby at a scan at 10 weeks then the odds are the same as at 12 weeks, and a healthy baby at 8 weeks isn't far off. It's just the bit before 8 weeks that can be a bit dicey, heartbeat or not.

If you can get two scans, do one at 6 and 8 weeks - otherwise if you are only doing one and want longer term peace of mind I'd suggest holding on until 8 weeks. Bleeding is totally normal around this time unfortunately for some healthy pregnancies - scares us half to death! Good luck!

I've got one booked for tomorrow at 6+4 because of a bleed this week. I'm really nervous (well, it seems I am nervous about everything since getting pregnant) because I seem to read a lot of stories saying it was fine but then later a MMC was discovered at 8 or 12 weeks. I'm wondering if the ultrasound can be harmful so early on? I also have a retroverted uterus so I'm fully expecting they will say they can't find much!

Would I be better just to suck it up and wait?! Seems soooo long to wait but the thought I could be doing damage just to relieve my worrying is awful. Have lots of you had scans this early that were ok?

An extremely successful scan, dated 7+6 with beautiful heartbeat and the sonographer even pointed out the spine. I understand what you mean about not being rushed in a private scan. 4 Photos, 2 little cards with photo slots.. and a very easy way to tell my parents and DH's parents too. Our little bean even gave us a wiggle and is waving a flipper in the pics. Gestational sac and yolk sac both present.

Best wishes to all of you, and I would say go for it. It's not called a reassurance scan for nothing. xxx

ps - I've had scans at 6w0d and 6w1d with two of my other pregnancies, and seen the heartbeat fine too!

I just had one done on Sunday at 6+3. I would undoubtedly qualify for one on the NHS as I have had three first trimester losses, and I spot constantly, but I prefer private scans for that first one. For starters, they're not in a rush, they let you see the screen (the NHS ones I've had, it's often awkward to see or they don't let you see it until they know what's going on) and you can ask as many detailed questions as you like and they'll answer them. Some NHS sonographers will too, but plenty won't and just want you out the door so they can move onto the next patient.

Plus private scans are often more thorough - e.g. likely position of placenta, actual heartbeat speed (as opposed to "present") and they'll answer questions like "So is the yolk sac too big?" right away - most NHS sonographers don't know about a lot of these things as they're just on rotation or whatever and have no particular interest in early pregnancy, and the nurse practitioners I always saw afterwards didn't know either and would just drone on "we saw a heartbeat.." but I know from bitter experience that there is a lot more to it than that even if a heartbeat is a fabulous start.

I suppose a lot depends on the private clinic you choose - I used to go to one with a highly qualified midwife (£90) and now I've moved I had one done with a proper consultant (£110). Money well spent for sanity!

I certainly don't begrudge the NHS not providing as detailed a service, they don't have the resources to do more, and what they do do is absolutely fine for most people. I'm just one of those people who has been through a lot, learned a lot as a result and so wants to know everything.

Mine was absolutely fine, btw Grin - textbook in fact! Even after all my questions Blush

I think do it for peace of mind. If you feel more relaxed because you have seen a scan, it can only be a good thing!

I've got a reassurance scan this Saturday and I will be 6 weeks + 1 day. Its our first baby and my friend recently had her first and had her reassurance scan at 4 weeks (Was very tiny but you can see the little bean in the scan :-) I'm apprehensive but exited!

Kitty we saw baby, yolk sak and heartbeat really clearly (although we did get strongly warned at the beginning that this is not always the case)

Ours is £90 and at my local hospital EPU. St peters in Chertsey offers a private scanning service for all sorts. I am so incredibly nervous though!! Xx

Hi ladies - I've just booked my first scan for when I'm 5w6d....just before I head off on a long haul flight.

The one near where i live does do a quick gender scan though from 18 weeks for £39 so i might have to think about that if the nhs make me wait until 20 weeks Grin

Im glad dh is happy about it aswell. I had a quick look and its just the one place. If i could het one for £50 i would definately do it. £100 is just a bit too much. And dh says to just wait until my normal scan. I would be due it not long after our holiday in september so at least that might take my mind off it for a while. And my other symptoms are still there.

Let us know how they go those of you that are having them Smile

£180 for a reassurance scan??

Bloody Hell!!

When I told my husband how much it was I was expecting him to have a mini moan but he didn't. I have since shown him the website, including the image of a 7 week scan, and it put a huge smile on his face!! The baby looked like a little jelly baby floating through space - we are so excited!!

I booked one too! You know how I was deliberating about what to do, well I rang up (going private for this scan) and they said they had one appointment for tomorrow at 5pm, and some next week. So I took that as a sign and went for the one tomorrow! I will be 7+6. Eeek! :)

ps. the 6/8 week confused sized baby is now 34 weeks and regularly kicking in the ribs :) (and I've still got two due dates a week apart as they didn't redate me at 12 weeks)

Report
PurplePoppySeed · 05/08/2013 15:42

as others have said - definately contact your local EPU, mine were brilliant :) I also had a missed miscarriage the first time, at the time I had a scan at 5 weeks due to possible ectopic - no HB but they told me it wasn't always there at 5 weeks and that 6 weeks is the norm to spot it. When back at 8 weeks to see nothing had changed and it was a MMC - definately glad I didn't get to 12 weeks to find out, though it's still upsetting at 8.

This time they gave me an 8 week scan no worries :) however, just one thing to have in mind - when I went at 8 weeks, they told me that there was no way I was 8 weeks, in fact, I was more like 6... this didn't match my dates (based on when I think I ov'ed and the dates we DTD so it really worried me as I assumed it wasn't growing enough. I went back 2 weeks later and they said I was about 9 weeks then (which is possible), but for those 2 weeks I was really really worried (even though I'd seen a HB).
