Potty training

Encopresis / poo

I toyed with posting this as I know that encopresis can be very difficult to treat and our experience will not reflect all. But nonetheless it might be helpful to someone.

We toilet trained before our DD was ready and out of stress she started withholding poo. This stretched her bowel and she lost some sensation.

We only did the toilet training for about a month before we gave up but the damage was done

She spent a year or so on movicol, followed by a year or so with pico dulcolax, tiny amounts to stimulate the bowel. At around 5/ 5.5 we stopped all medication. At nearly 6 years we noticed that the bowel movements really settled down and one day she just started pooing in the loo and hasn't had an accident since.

The whole thing had a big affect on us all - she felt sad and worried that she couldn't use the toilet for poos. School were great but it was stressful and I was anxious throughout.

I guess I'm posting to say if you think your child is too young and not really getting potty training you should proceed with caution.
