Potty training

Logistics of 3 yr old pooing in public toilet

My 3 year old boy has taken to potty training fantastically (still the occasional accident and far from ready for no nappy at night time, but we've only been going at it 3 months). We're starting to get brave and not take a potty out with us as he'll comfortably use a public toilet for a wee.

However, the poo's are going to be a different story. He amazingly did a poo in a restaurant toilet recently, but with the use of our adaptor seat that reduces the size of the toilet seat. I can foresee a time where we might forget to bring it along and I was wondering if anyone had a technique of how to sit him on a toilet for a poo without him falling through! For wee's I just sit him a long way back and I hold onto a leg so he doesn't fall in, but if I do that for a poo it's going to be very messy.

I think if you had said in your OP that you knew about holding him under the arms but wondered if anyone had any other different tricks then you would have got different responses to the 'just hold him under that arms' comments. We can't guess what you mean.

You learn to ignore twat posters on here, ive been using mn since my first pregnancy in 2008 and the twat posts don't even register to me anymore!

My 3 year old just holds himself up to be honest but for a while he was scared and I held him under the arms, now he just supports himself. They get there

My DS is 3 and he just sits and holds himself up with his hands on the seat? He rarely poos on a loo though, still prefers a potty at home. He poos very quickly though as he’s always hanging on until he has to go...

Op, if you think this is harsh, do not venture to AIBU. You will regret it Confused

I am all for making things as easy as possible! !

I hold my DC under the arms on public toilets.

At home, they hold onto the toilet seat to stop themselves falling in. At first I would stay with them ready to catch them and hold them up if they needed extra support.

I’m not sure there are any neat tricks for getting a 3 yr old to learn it faster TBH. It just takes time for them to get a bit bigger and get a bit more strength and practice.

It’s definitely worth persevering with practicing without the adapter seat though. I know a few kids who had problems with soiling themselves when they started school - they were too scared of using a toilet without an adapter seat to sit on the school toilets, but weren’t always capable of holding a poo in until they got home.
