Your DH sounds so similar to mine Vag. He gets lost in his home town!

Rubes I could relate totally to your rant and unwillingness to rely on MIL.

Hope all is progressing nicely Beans. A friend of a friend had an awful experience when she didn't know she had strep b prior to her baby being born. I'm glad you are getting the right treatment.

your dh sounds like me Vag, but actually dh is very good with directions - I've lost count how many times I have called him lost when driving in London and he's directed me, but then again he did live / drive there for over 10 years - he's just bad at remembering things like we changed bloody nursery's!
He managed to collect her though

Omg don't even get me started on dh finding his way to places by himself that he has been to loads of times. Even worse if he makes it to pick one of the kids up from something and there is a diversion on the way back & he has to go he gets completely thrown and can't find his way back soms.

dh left work early so I asked him to collect dd on the way home. His response "yes ok, I should..... be able to make it in time, unless traffic is horrendous - what time does she need to be collect by? 530 right?"

Erm, no you have until 630 if need be.... We've only discussed this forever last night.... [rollseyes] Think I'll get her now - I don't want her to stay that long, and he'll probably forget where the nursery is Hmm I'll leave him to pick up WineGrin

Don't worry Deids! I'm over it. Grin It's just I felt like I always rent about the things that bother me about mil and never say any nice things I spose!
That's a classic that dh would ask.
Just back from gym. Got hasdled by the new pt type on day 2 trying to rustle up business. Then to school pick up. I drove so it was a shit fight to get out of there since everyone apparently drives. Despite us being furthest out in catchment area, apparently most of the bloody school lives closer but drive Hmm guess its the weather too.
Then ds fell out the car when we got home and grazed his head so he's in a proper foul mood. Everything is my fault! He fell out apparently because I was talking to him, and also because daddy didn't buy the side steps for the car yet and it was too high. [sigh]

I'm glad you are not too gutted about the homebirth. I liked that article because it isn't all dead set against hospital, but it does give some good information that is accurate and backed up by sound evidence and it gives some decent tips of things to ask and things to think about for your labour that are relevent even in hospital. There is a tendency in the medical profession to say "you have X so the plan is Y" without giving you the options or really making sure you understand what is going on. hat's something I really don't like!

The paramedics were like that with ds2 the other week. I'd have killed them if I hadn't been busy concentrating on the baby. They even did his blood sugars without asking me, telling me what it was for or giving me the result afterwards! Not like it was rushed, he was awake, not fitting and screaming by that point. I knew what they were doing because I'm familiar with it but they didn't know that.

Indith, you are a total star. Thank you so very much! Will have a good read. Think I am happy to have the baby in hospital really, as wasn't dead set on homebirth, just would have been nice, but I don't have massively strong feelings about it.

Anyway, I know I should go for a walk, but its pissing with rain and I feel slightly violated after my sweep, so am going to out my feet up for a bit!

X

I don't know much about it tbh Beans. We've not covered anything that isn't "normal" at uni yet though of course I've come across plenty of things on placement that are not normal!

The homebirth website actually has a very good article on it with all the references to guidelines etc rather than just anecdotal. A snippet from it

"If the mother's vagina is colonized with Group B Strep, her baby's skin may pick it up from the birth canal during labour. But just having a positive skin test for GBS does not mean that your baby is unhealthy - it is normal in this situation and for the vast majority of babies, it will not cause any problems at all. However, in a small minority of babies the bacteria can go on to cause an infection, and these babies develop Group B Strep Disease, more technically termed Early Neonatal Group B Streptococcal Septicaemia (ENGBSS), where the GBS infection causes blood poisoning. This can lead to meningitis and disability or death.

GBS disease is very rare - in the UK, if the mother is known to carry GBS when she is in labour, there is a 35-50% chance that her baby will pick up GBS on its skin, but only 0.2-0.5% of these babies will become ill as a result. Putting these figures together, if a woman who is carrying GBS in labour has a 50% chance that her baby will pick up the bacteria, the chance of the baby developing GBS disease is between 1 in 400 and 1 in 1,000."

Full article is here. It goes through various options about the antibiotics eg asking to have them administered in a bolus dose or even via IM injection rather than having a drip so you can still have freedom of movement.

It is a funny one really. We don't routinely test for it in the UK because it isn't thought to be beneficial to do so yet if we do know a woman has it then she is considered high risk. I find that very odd, heck I've never been tested, I could have it for all anyone knows yet I'm considered a low risk perfectly good home birth candidate!

Hope it goes well for you and that the link is useful in understanding a bit more about it.

Urgh, feel bad now. I shouldn't speak ill of my mil either Deids. She IS very helpful most of the time..... in a slightly albeit manipulating, possibly subconscious (unlikely) way!
No, I do appreciate the help, having no other family around.

Right, I'm off to the gym as it's right over the road from school Grin

JJ & Rubes you both have every reason to be bloody fuming!! DH is generally ok. But he does have a tendency to shift swop in the school hols (when we need cover) and not tell me to till the night before. Which means I have to ring mum or FIL and beg a favour! Bloody winds me up

Rubes I hear you on the MIL help/line crossing. I won't speak ill of MIL but I think I said in the early days of our threads she was manipulative when it came to the DCs. Her

Oh no JJ. Can def understand your anger Angry how annoying!!!!!
Arti we have the mess factor here too! However, times the messy factor by about 10 and you've got mil!! Thankfully dh improved. 8 years of training Wink
Have just had a proper rant about it all to Mum for about 2 hours. Feel a bit better but still not sure what to do.
Agreed shady, but then it's also quite hard to make sure she could do it every time due to her commitments.... No, I don't think I can. Getting cold shivers at the thought. It's the taking over I struggle with. And manipulating things which are loosely disguised as "helping"

Vag I'd be livid too. Crikey when it rains it pours round here.

Hopefully baby beans news soon to cheer us!

Hello everyone. So, am back at home. Been in and it's not my waters, its rancid watery discharge. But I am contracting a bit, so may well not need to be induced. I've had a sweep, which was grim. Bt I've got Group B Streptococcus in my fanjo, so I can't have a home birth, as need to be on antibiotics throughout labour so that the baby isn't infected. I am considered high risk! How extraordinary.

Anyway, life goes on, just about to have a pizza and hope things get moving. Am 2cm dilated, so guess things are moving a weenie bit. The midwife reckoned tomorrow latest, but I have to go in when my contractions start, can't labour at home because of the risk of infection. D you know about it, Indith?

Rubes, sorry you're having such a shocker. How irritating! And JJ. I feel your pain!

By gosh it is an unhappy morning on the thread. I am lucky that DH is reasonably good at remembering things and I am rather disorganised myself so not in a position to criticise. I rather rely on him actually! He finds other ways to annoy me though, primarily by being messy and apparently blind to mess so never bothered by it.

JJ, brilliant news that S went to school happily. DD2 did not cry today or yesterday so we have also had a breakthrough. I think she is trying to impress the new au pair!

Can I rant briefly about a diary clash? In November DH and I are going away for the weekend Grin only as far as Suffolk, but it's our first ever weekend without girls, the ILs are coming down to look after them. It's a singing weekend with some good friends in a posh country house, and the Sat afternoon is set aside for free time to do touristy stuff, go for walks etc. He's just realised that he's managed to book 3 very hard-to-pin-down people for a 3 hour meeting during this free afternoon. Ths meeting cannot be changed as one of the people is coming across the country for it. Apparently even though the weekend has been marked on the calendar since June he didn't put it in his diary and so will be absent for several hours of our FIRST EVER CHILD FREE WEEKEND. I will instead be taking a good book to the pub and nursing many pints of ale, and grinding my teeth a bit.

Rubes you have my greatest sympathy, all rather confusing so easy to see how you need to be uber organised.

Oh I'm so mad. There is a school holiday here because it's the day the king reads the budget. So the boys are both home and ds2 has a friend over. The three of them snuck into the spare room and opened one of the star wars lego things I'd gotten on sale to use as birthday presents and opened it. I think they thought if they opened it and made it I would have no choice but to let them have it. Well they were sorely mistaken I've taken it off them gone mad at them and promised to give it away. Cross mummy alert. I've called them thieves and ungrateful for the gazillion toys they already have.

Ah, I now see the problem. Ah. Oh dear Sad Well...all I can say is that you may only have to have MIL once a month. That's just about teeth grittable I reckon. Alternatively is there anyone locally with a similar routine who could help you out??
