If there was an 'In/Out' referendum on Europe, how would you vote?

I've always been a pro-European and think that leaving the EU would present more problems than it would solve. But recent events have thrown up some fundamental questions that make me less confident in that opinion. Which way would you vote if a referendum was held and why?

According to the Guardian the number of people who have to work on minimum wage will double over the next 20 years. This is great news for company bosses and shareholders. This is fuelled by workers from post 2004 accession countries happily wanting to work for minimum wage as it is double the minimum wage in their own countries. Work here for a year, live 10 to a house then go back with 2 years worth of pay. This drives up rents and lowers the wages that bosses will offer. The 2 speed EU is broken. A vote for remain will condemn our young people to a life on minimum wage.

One of the main arguments for leaving the EU-which buys 50% of our exports -is that we could do more trade elsewhere in the world.. If this is the case and it is so easy/favourable to do so then why are we not already doing more trade outside the eu eg like the big contract we signed with China recently Surely the EU cannot
stop us trading elsewhere? Or am I wrong?
Trading with some countries outside the EU is difficult. Many charge high tariffs and bribery/corruption among Officials is rife.GB leads in product design but half the world is starving so who would be able to afford our goods other than the richer nations

I don't think there is anything wrong with pulling up an old thread. Just a bit of reusing and recycling - aren't we all meant to do more of that?

And in terms of people's views have probably moved on - if you believe that you haven't been listening to either of the campaigns.

It means "this thread hasn't been posted on for while".

If you're discussing Jane Austen, that probably doesn't matter. People who previously commented on it would be happy to have this come up in their I'm On, and won't mind their previous opinions being dug up and re-discussed.

If you're discussing politics, people's views have probably moved on, so it's generally considered better to join an existing "live" thread or start a new thread.

I set up a thread in the recent past but have never heard of zombie things.

I am new to mumsnet and the net.
I really don't know why I am being told off for coming on to this thread.
Yes I did see a zombie thing but I didn't know what it meant.

If this thread is so old which I didn't even see

There's usually a zombie warning on old threads. (see picture)

how come you were suddenly alerted to someone posting on it?

Many MN users find interesting threads via the Active Conversations page

I find that very odd.

Are you quite new to the internet?

It came up in active conversations, that was how she was alerted to it.

You, though, either googled this thread or went through a dozen pages in the politics section.

OUT.

The money we save on EU payments can go as internal relief to traders if other countries erected trade barriers (which they wouldnt because they need us as much as we need them).

I would vote for us to come out but to maintain a trading link which was what we voted on in 1974/5. We should also be exploring better trading links with the USA China India Brazil and the Commonwealth.

I've been shocked at how the french and german political elite have bullied particularly greece and italy, and shamelessly intimidated their national political processes and how they have also treated a number of other national leaders, including our PM, with utter contempt.

We should come out.

I take the comments in the DT comments section much like I take MN - with a pinch of salt and a good giggle.

I wasn't aware of a Crete reference apart from it being mentioned here, but thought the Porsche thing was amusing, hence the mention.

Watching this whole thing unravel is like watching something in slow motion that you can't stop happening. If it wasn't so serious, you could almost point out the separate elements of a Greek tragedy. Greece down, Berlusconi almost out, who will Merkozy have in their sights next, and when will Nemesis steal up on them?

scaryteacher - did you not read the comments under that article in the DT comprehensively rubbishing it?

And this had nothing to do with the Crete reference - as OTheHugeWerewolef has not replied, I'm assuming it was made up.

I would say Bramshott that we are offshore!

Claig - no it was a small rural town of farmers.

Te - we have always had easy trade links with mainland Europe from the 11th century onwards really, well before the EU was dreamed up.
