Now Kveta, your line about hubs putting up a shelf did make me laugh (laugh out loud indeed Wink).

Facebook is ageing me. So many of my friends, who seem to have grasped the basics of grammar in conversation, yet on Facebook!

On a daily basis, I see 'should of', 'your' (when they mean 'you're'), 'there' instead of 'they're' not to mention the general spelling atrocities and the apostrophes in plurals.

Why do I look?

You know what I hate? Incorrect 'a's: independance, definately, infinately-drives me potty. Luckily, DH works in publishing so he happily joins in my ranting.

I say 'cleek' and 'cleeky'. Just so you know you're not alone!

Sometimes I like to say things like "there's gold in them there hills" so you can all infer that I am Old-Timey and show me proper respect. Doesn't work, tho, bcoz ur all WHIPPER-SNAPPERS (rofl lol !!!!!!!!!!! and..... um ..........)

It does infect you and make it seem normal.
But also sometimes it's nice to play around with words, you know like that silly language code we used to do as children.
So sometimes I like to say ur or tomoz or I were stood standing at bus stop just for, you know, fun

FreddieMercury- sadly even a fair number of old timers use the incorrect 'discrete' at times.

I told someone off for using kisses earlier today Hmm

Though I do like the use of... ellipses.

Mind you, there have always been problems of this nature on MN. I remember I had been on here for about a year when I made my very first spelling mistake - there instead of their. My heart sank; I had known that the misspellings here would infect me at some point. Grin

That was in 2006 (and I'd been lurking for years by then, so horribly at risk!).

Discrete instead of discreet.

I am sat here doing x, y, z.

No. No! You are sitting.

Why can nobody spell NIECE or WEIRD properly? I'm sick of reading about people's "neices" or things that are "wierd".

Jux · 11/10/2011 22:43

The MN demographic is changing then. Seems there are fewer (natch!) members who have an understanding of written English. It's a shame, as that was the thing that set MN apart, from my pov.

Just found this thread, I think I love you all a little bit. Every time I see 'lol', 'lolz' , 'hun', 'would/should of' or 'babe' a small piece of me dies inside.

Thanks norks - as I thought. But literally no-one says it like that, so it made me think I was being a cock.

Clique is pronounced 'cleek', with a French accent if you happen to have one.

People who spell "would of" instead of "would have" bothers me. But I'm totally an "LOL" user!

Report
madmomma · 23/09/2011 22:55

Oh God VFVF! That reminds me - I've become more and more conscious over the years that maybe I'm pronouncing 'clique' incorrectly. Blush I always thought there was an 'eee' sound in it, rather than 'click', but so many people pronounce it as click and clicky that I am doubting myself. How the bloody hell is it pronounced?

Report
thenightsky · 14/08/2011 20:22

Agree OP. It has got a lot worse very recently. I saw someone actually type 'hun' at least thrice in one post only yesterday Sad

Actually, I was being kind, they're is not used. It's there usually.

I'm not clever enough to be a true pedant, but can I add my most hated?

I don't go to toddler groups, they're too clicky

The "bare" thing I have noticed. No, I don't want to strip naked with you. I don't even know you.

It's not just on MN, however, it is rife. One of my friends has been "doing" dating websites, and I can't get over the lack of spelling and grammar in people's profiles.

otoh, I might just be a bit poncy like that Blush My mum was an english teacher and corrected my grammar vociferously at every turn. I did have cause to have a hard look at myself the other day when I heard my 3yo ds use the word "eh-oh" in a sentence- the word he was actually looking for, and which was provided for him by my 6yo dd was "ergo" Blush You know you might be a bit poncy when your 3yo is using Latin terms (in his defence, he had the context exactly right, just a slight mispronunciation)

Olifin, I do that as well. I think it's ok if it's at the end of a paragraph though (but then I would think that, wouldn't I!)
I don't like it when it's between every phrase though.

There seems to be a recent spate of new users/name-changers that are either misspelling words in their usernames, or using words incorrectly.

I've never noticed this before but it keeps jumping out of the screen at me lately and I just cannot then take them seriously.
