How long did your newborn take to regain birth weight?

My daughter is 24 days old and still 9% below birthweight. So far she's exclusively breastfed w good latch, plenty of poo and wet nappies and a good sleeper. I've been expessing to boost supply and getting about 60ml a day off.

I'm under pressure from health professionals now to add formula feeds. Should I, or is this length of time to regain pretty common?

How long did you newborn take to regain?

Thank you

I like an update on a post so... We seem to have found a happy pattern of breastfeeding on demand as usual and letting her have both sides until she finishes both of her own accord. Then I give ebm in a bottle if I have it, and/ or formula until she's satisfied.

She is visibly chubbier (had become quite scrawny looking) and super content. Also she slept 12-6 last night! Only thing is she's now windier and can be sick after a bottle if she's had it too fast. Frequent breaks and burps during bottles helps.

Weigh in later today!

DD was 8lbs when born
Day 2 was 7lb 13oz
Day 3 was 8lb 2oz

But I know this is extremely rare!

@ODog

We are going to a bf clinic this week who will treat a tongue tie if there is one, plus advise on bf technique etc. I'll be delighted to go back to ebf if we can, or carry on with mixed as we are if necessary. I'm just happier my baby seems to be thriving

It's unbelievable how stressful feeding can be!

Thanks for your kind advice.

I hope it works out for you! My personal advice is that even if bf takes off, is to still give your baby a daily bottle of expressed milk or formula. I know lots of people who’s babies refuse the bottle. My DD was similar to your baby and is now bf apart from one bottle a day. That gives me some freedom to either go out or get more sleep. Good luck

I would suspect tongue tie in a baby with persistent weight gain issues. Even if you are feeding regularly and baby is happy etc, tongue tied babies can be quite inefficient at the breast and feeding can exhaust them so they don’t always get what they need.

Both my DSes have/had tongue tie and neither was picked up by nhs health care professionals (numerous ones in DS1’s case, with DS2 I was more prepared and knew what to look for). If you want to continue bf I would strongly recommend finding a practitioner , this website is a good place to start

She was tongue tied!!!!!!! Can't believe it, I asked loads of the health professionals. They only took it seriously when I told them I'd booked a private clinic appt to rule it out.

Ended up w a cancellation on the nhs and got it snipped yesterday.
