What chores do your 2-7 year olds do?

DS 7.9

lays and clears the table, puts away washing up, tidies toys away, puts dirty washing and clean washing away (I fold it though), matches socks ,sorts clothes into piles and takes it to the right room, makes cereal, toast, cooks things in microwave, makes cold drinks and drinks in the tassimo, does his packed lunch, sweeps, vacuums and steam mops the floors and dusts (I often go over these things though when he's not about), puts rubbish in the bin and recycling outside, wheels the bins out and puts them out, feeds the cats (I open the tin), gets himself fruit, yoghurt, cheese etc out of the fridge in between meals, cleans up messes and spills he has made, makes bed, waters plants, helps me plant things. He doesn't peel veg (too clumsy) or use oven or kettle yet. It might sound a lot to some, but he doesn't do all of this all the time, but these are things he offers to do or things he can do if I ask.

7.3 DS lays the table every night and keeps his own room fairly tidy. He also puts his dirty washing in the laundry basket, gets his own breakfast, helps with feeding cats, unpacks his lunch bag after school and will normally help with other stuff when asked. DS2 is 16, he sweeps the bathroom, landing, stairs, hallways and kitchen every night, washes bathroom and kitchen floors twice a week, he also empties the recycling and food waste bins each night and will often help with laundry with support. He needs help and reminding with some of his jobs as he has ASD and takes a while to learn new things. DS1 does nothing as he's moved out, LOL. He is living with his girlfriend and does laundry, housework and all the cooking now :D

I pour bleach on and it gets rid of evidence like magic.

I'm not sure. There's a lot of dark muttering about them being covered in poo and such (mine isn't and yours looks spiffy) but I don't really understand the depth of feeling about it!
Apparently you're meant to pop your gloves on and get down into the bowl to scrub with your hands.

I much prefer your method of using a toddler proxy! Such a cute one too.

Loo brushes are eeevil Ohbyethen? Lol. Why's that then?

If there are people who don't have a loo brush how do they, ya know, get rid of, ahem... 'evidence'...?

Just saw Yorkshire's minipudding and did an actual 'D'awww'. Better duck and cover though because you have a loo brush Shock

So do I but apparently they're eeevil.

Oh yeah, clears plates after meals, beats eggs for omelettes/cakes, lays table.
Gets himself into school uniform in the morning.
Had school shirt on backwards today, and I never noticed until I picked him up from childminders! (negligent mummy)

Blimey. Same age as OP's.
Er...pairs socks, takes in washing off the line, makes his cereal at the weekend, tidies and vacs his room (with much complaining), puts away his clean clothes, cleans patio doors (outside).
helps with shopping, carries shopping.
Doesn't help himself to snacks, because there would be no food left in the house.
Now I feel like I need him to clean the toilet.Shock
Someone should.

I started off pleased that people were all kind of doing the same thing.
Then by the end I realised I don't have dc, I have miniature staff.
In mitigation they help with the outside jobs and animals because they don't feed, milk or clean themselves and the more help I get the more play time for all of us.
On the plus side they eat and sleep brilliantly and they quite like me so I can't be a super awful mummy. Hopefully Blush
They get high days and holidays off and a brand new chunk of coal every Christmas. And get to sleep in t'house when it rains.

Also he could probably sort washing but I'm quite particular so would have to go through it all to check it was how I like it so I may as well do it myself.

Oh yes DS wipes surfaces, sink, bath etc for me.

Fishstix How old was DD When she started stripping and remaking her bed? DS can strip his but I struggle to put duvet covers on so never tried him with that.

DS (just 3)
Any kind of mixing
Chopping- with a blunt knife, (lumpy carrots are the norm)
Unloading washer
Passing clothes up to be hung on line
Fetching stuff I can't quite reach (can't be bothered to get up for)
Helping plant seeds in the garden
Washing the car (usually accompanied by expressionist dancing to very loud drum and bass)
General sweeping
Remembering items to buy on shopping trips- surprisingly good at this Smile

Oh he used to feed the cat as well Grin it helped make amends for all the times he chased him as a toddler!

DS is 5, doesn't have set chores but will do at various times:

Cleans the coffee table with spray and a cloth
Wipes around the bathroom sink with spray and a cloth
Occasionally washes up some items in the bathroom sink (in a flat so same floor).
Helps me sort/spray stain remover on/put in/hang up washing
Makes his own bed
Tidies his own room - with much cajoling!
Hoovers living room/his own room
Sometimes lays the table if we're bothering to lay the table
Collects up plates/cups/etc from around the house
Can make himself simple sandwiches, cut veg for a cold lunch type meal (I cut tricky things like apples). Sometimes helps cook dinner although he's not really helping.
Carries things home from the shop sometimes.

I don't think it's too much or too little. He's not doing that entire list every day. I've always let him "help" even if his help isn't so helpful, and we try to set the mantra that everybody should pitch in even if their contribution isn't equal, it just matters that they are doing something.

2.6yr old pushes the go button on the dishwasher, helps hoover, tidies his toys, and puts stuff in the bin. I thought it was pretty good going tbh!

I think I have found an investment piece there spider Grin

I think I am the only one who doesn't lay the table! I just plonk our plates onto the tablecloth with cutlery. I found place mats didn't do much other than need wiping down individually. I'd rather just do the one tablecloth

I have an 18 month old who likes to help. So no chores as such, but he likes to:

  • get the broom and try to sweep the floor
  • hoover (I let him have a go once I've done it)
  • mop the floor (surprisingly quite good at that - under supervision!)
  • tidy up (have to check bins carefully!)
  • help me hang up washing (he hands each item to me, then I put it on the airer)

Both of mine (2 and 5) are expected to put their own dirty clothes in the laundry basket and tidy their toys away on a night. The latter is more work than the former.

3yo likes to help (or rather, likes me to help him) tidying his toys nd books away and he loves running a cloth and can lay the table (sort of) but we don't call them chores. Even my 12yo doesn't do "chores" but he keeps his space clean and helps with housework.
