HELP Colicky baby :(

RiotBecky · 27/10/2013 10:06

DS is nearly 3 weeks old and cries all night long, starting from about 1am until about 5am. We've just started using infacol and really hope that helps. Both of us have had to leave the room and have a little cry, I'm worried that it's going to affect my partner more as he has work in the week and needs the sleep. What did you use to help with colic/inconsolable baby?

colief is a motherflippin life saver. my mum also gave him a nice long tummy massage yesterday and he was trumping for Britain throughout Grin after the massage him tummy was so lovely and soft, I'd never seen it like that as it was always so hard and full of wind :(

Colief is amazing isn't it?!

After a feed I give him a burp and then he goes into his rocking/vibrating chair which keeps him nicely upright without putting pressure on his head and neck. He's had a couple of grizzly moments today where I've panicked and thought the colief wasn't working, but then he let out an almighty trump and fell back to sleep. Still not going to get my hopes up though cos he had a couple of quiet nights in a row before and then was worse than ever.

Make sure you burp him well and hold him upright for a good 30 mins after feeds. During the day as well as at night. Think of his digestive tract as being like a long tube - to get air out it needs to be as straight as possibe. So hold his body as straight as you can. Also sit him upright on your lap and rock his body around in a circle slowly to release all the bubbles. I also found lying him down for a moment then bringing upright for more winding helped get it all out.

It's so hard but it does improve. You're doing a great job. Hope the colief helps!

Just a further thought in case it helps - we had terrible times with Colic with my DD - I found Infacol no help but stopped her screaming momentarily due to a different taste in her mouth.

When desperate I would put her in a warm bath for a few mins (she loves bathing) and the warm water soothed her tummy, and when I got her out would wind her over my shoulder and got lots of gas up.

I bought a grape seed cushion and would heat this up in the microwave for 20 secs and put this on her stomach - also helped.

I bought a fisher price bouncer with vibration function - the vibration works to get rid of anything being a bit backed up (don't use straight after a feed obv.)

I make up all her formula with diluted fennel tea - this was borne out of a misunderstanding between me and DH and he meant just plain fennel tea. Having said that it has worked like a charm to be honest - amazing, and much better than infacol etc. I use two bags to 2 litres of water for 5 minutes standing in water then remove. I bought a 2 litre keep warm thermos jug from Ikea and use this to make her bottles up.

Also cumin oil can help massaging on stomach.

been to the doctors now and he's been prescribed colief, he's only had 2 feeds with it since but the difference is amazing. I'm so impressed!

Oh no - you are not a bad mummy and you WILL sort this out! What are the symptoms now and what are you using?

Flowers for you

I'll give colief a go if he gets bad again tonight. Don't want to get my hopes up in case last night was just cos he was exhausted and that's why he slept.

So far swaddling, dummy, and infacol seem to be doing the job. Fingers crossed this stays all night.

He was so good before the colic started as well, everyone kept saying how well rested we both were! Same thing happened with my pregnancy, was so easy in the beginning, no morning sickness or anything, then as soon as I got to 28 weeks the problems kicked in!!

Hang in there. This will pass. DS had the most awful colic for the first 3 months of his life. He was sleeping through the night by 5.5 months and has done err since. Don'tean to sound smug: just offering a ray of hope that babies can go from being colicky screaming nightmare sleepers to 11-hours-per-night dreams in the space of a few months.

He normally burps a couple of times after feeds, we've started burping him for a lot longer now. We're using Dr Brown bottles, only started using them exclusively yesterday so fingers crossed they help now.

Probably won't make you feel better but I can honestly say I tried everything in the book for colic, spent a fortune and was disappointed after getting my hopes up that something was going to work.

It was the worse time of my life thought it would never end but in all honesty the only thing that worked in the end was time. Things calmed down around 4 months and by that point I'd stopped stressing about accepted that this was just how things were going to be and just got on with it and before I knew it we'd have a few nights peace and soon enough they turned into weeks/months.

Be kind to yourself and your partner, support each other and when one of you snaps,as you will many times, don't judge and take over for 5.

Hth wish someone had said same to me would of saved myself a lot of money and stress.

In addition to all the other comments we also gave da a cherry dummy which is meant to hit an acccupressure point on the roof of the mouth that relieves colic. Health visitor told us this and they did seem to help as well as just generally soothe him. Ds had colic from 2 weeks old till 16 weeks from 3pm to 11pm. Was awful but keeping him upright as much as possible in the day helped and colief drops which I managed to get on prescription worked miracles.

does he burp after feeds? do you think it is wind trapped in the upper body so he needs to burp or wind trapped in his gut so he needs to fart? if he needs to burp then you'll need to find the best burping method and tilt his mattress a bit. If it's wind in his intestines then regular tummy massages will help.

gripe water is great for burping but a bugger to administer.

am typing on phone so can't see if you use bottles but if he is working hard on the teat a faster flow might help him stop taking in more air. might be a good idea to get your latch checked and for tongue tie.

I know it's nerve wracking co-sleeping but he might just want the comfort of his mummy. can your partner sleep on the sofa so you can have the whole bed to yourself?

it is really hard but it will pass.

Not sure if it's colic or reflux, what's the difference? Also, hadn't pooped properly all day and just had a very liquid poop, mw and hv coming tomorrow so will mention that to them both.

Just to offer a different opinion, I tried comfort milk for my DS but it made him poo too much as there's so much fibre in it. Turns out his main reason for wind is how furiously he sucks on his bottle so the comfort milk didn't help as that's mainly for stomach cramps and constipation etc. I use infacol which helps, but now he's over a month old I also use gripe water half way through or at the end if a feed if he's struggling to get his wind up. It has made a world of difference. Warm baths are also soothing.

I'm afraid trial and error is the best way to find out what works for your LO but you'll get there and it doesn't last forever. You have my sympathies though, it is really, really hard. My DS still has a bad turn every morning at 5:30am but now we've found ways to manage it they are much shorter.

HTH

I feel your pain! My DD2 is 5 weeks today & colicky night & day. She does settle during random periods. She is so full of air I'm surprised she hasn't floated away!
I'm breastfeeding & I'm trying everything to stop her gulping air down. I'm using infacol too but doesn't seem to be doing much.
It's so hard when your in the throws if it. I've got the fear that it won't ever get better & she will have this problem forever.
I found walking up & down with my IPod in listening to some upbeat music helped me deal with the non stop crying. It's the walking that's so difficult when your dead on your feet.

I hope things get better for you soon but be rest assured your not alone in dealing with this. X

I don't know if I could trust myself co-sleeping, I don't think I'd be able to fully relax :( We'll be trying the white noise again tonight, and keep up with the infacol. He's got a dummy as he was a thumb sucker even when still inside me! And he started sucking fabrics etc and I didn't want him choking on fibres, so a dummy was quickly implemented.

My DD was colicky from about 2 weeks old and I remember how awful it was so I really feel for you. Hmm

Things that helped us were changing to comfort milk, white noise, co-sleeping (as she seemed to settle better in our bed rather than in her Moses/cot/pram), finding a dummy that she liked (Avent), infacol and gripe water.

She did eventually just grow out of it, although I know that's not helpful to you when you're in the thick of it. Really hope that you see some improvement soon Thanks
