One year old not sleeping at nursery

My one year old started nursery 2 months ago and does 3 days a week. He's an excellent sleeper at home and has two naps a day (1 hour in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon). I put him to bed at 6.30pm and he sleeps through to 7am no problem. We're extremely lucky that he sleeps so well at home but at nursery he either doesn't sleep at all or might have half an hour tops. So by the time we pick him up his completely knackered, passes out in the car and then we give him his bottle and bed as soon as he's home. On nursery days I usually have to wake him up in the morning too because he's so tired.

He's been ill pretty much constantly since he started nursery and lack of sleep there just seems to make him worse. He sleeps in a separate room in nursery with other kids in the dark but they say he just cries and pulls at the cot bars until they get him up. They also put him to bed for one nap a day in the afternoon now (he used to have two naps but they changes to one because he wouldn't sleep) so could he just be overtired? Should I just perservere and see if his sleep gets better or should I get them to try two naps a day etc? Any tips appreciated!

Thanks

Hm I came on to post about this.. Dd started nursery at 10 months and 5 months later still won't nap properly, 30 mins and she's done. She also cries and unsettles the other children at nap time! Feel like she's the naughty one now. Blush
Sleeps ok for us at the weekend and has started to do 12-13 hour nights ( thank fuck) but I do worry it's not enough.

I'm another one who says if they need to sleep then go to a childminder. DD would have been in a real state if she couldn't sleep, and she could only sleep in a moving pram or car, so nursery would have been a disaster.

Neither of mine ever settled/slept at nursery.

Both at a childminder now and they're different children. Sleep/nap well. Never get poorly.

I did worry. Sleep is crucial for growth/mental wellbeing etc. I wasn't prepared to take the risk.

It was a great nursery but their health was more important.

Rosie 19 I would tell them to give him to naps and possible change his nappy before putting him down to nap

Your baby's are probably staying awake because the nursery are not changing them first my son and dorter I change there nappies then take them to nurcery then I tell the nursery to change my son and dorter every half hour_an hour

I wouldn't worry. Let them try for one nap as usual as if he doesn't sleep that's ok. He's still getting a good nights sleep at home. Nursery is very stimulating so even with a nap he might fall asleep in the car

My DD does this, also 1yo. She'll nap fine at home although we're down to one long nap, usually just over 2 hours. At nursery I think things are just too exciting and she's not interested, so she'll have half an hour or so.

Can you send in a teddy bear / blanket that smells of home? Does he have sleep cues at home they can replicate?

DD's nursery suggested the bear and they give DD her dummy and settle her down. They will pat or rock other children to sleep if that's what they're used to (I don't know if this is usual or DD's nursery are unusually accommodating!)

I've just accepted that she will sleep at nursery if she's tired enough and not if she won't, and as long as she's napping at home okay, her patterns at nursery will be different.
