Advice on guitar buying?

I know absolutely nothing about guitars, I know someone that wants a guitar. Are there any that are good for beginners?

Where could I buy one? And could I get a second hand one? What is the price range for a half decent one?

Anyone??

Is it a grown-up someone? Absolute beginner? Lessons? If lessons then ask teacher.

I play a little but would want to choose my guitar myself. That's not helpful, is it? Sorry.

Start with the basics, electric or acoustic?
