We have been asked to conduct a survey to find out parents and childrens' attitudes and perceptions about different vision correction options. Please be aware the questions for your child do discuss various aspects of children wearing contacts.

The survey is open to all UK MNers who have at least one child aged 10-17 years who currently requires some sort of vision correction such as glasses or contact lenses. We have lots of responses from children aged 12 and under and would ideally like to get more from those aged 13+ now, though all welcome...

This survey has two main pages of questions: one for parents and one for your child.

Please ensure your child is nearby when you start this survey as you'll need them to add their responses to the last page - if your child is not with you now please bookmark this thread or the survey link and complete it when you are together. If necessary you can leave the survey open which should save your responses but it would work best if your child is there and able to do the survey after you've answered your questions. There are 20 questions for you and 10 for your child.

We're looking for around 500 parents and 500 children to complete this survey. As a special incentive we have £250 of vouchers to be won by TWO lucky MN families. The two winners - drawn at random from everyone adding their details - can choose from John Lewis or iTunes vouchers to the value of £250 - and we're leaving it up to you how you negotiate with your child over how (if at all) the £250 is split between you should you win....

I did wonder if the questions especially for the children weren't aimed at nudging them towards asking for contact lenses. Personally I don't think my son age 12 with his sticky mucky paws is ready for them.

Just realised, ds age nearly 14 , has to wear glasses at school for reading / computer work. (he does not wear them at home so I had forgotten he wears them tbh )
I would be very interested in his answers to the questions (to see if he finds them misleading too, I cannot imagine it would sway him)

Completed with my 11yr old dd, although she is not at all interested in contact lenses. I'd be happy enough for her to try them when she's a few years older but she doesn't like the thought of poking about in her eyes just yet

Just done survey with 17 y/o DS. He's wise to the ways of marketing and laughed at how leading the questions were

My 12 yo would love contacts but our optician - Specsavers - wont do them got under 16s .... Which gets me out of that nicely....

From the levels of hygiene etc in her bedroom generally, no way would she manage contacts properly yet

I wondered what the point of the survey was. I think it is to provide statistics for advertising (to end users or stockists). I thought the questions seemed biased and were directing the interviewee to agree with pro contact lens statements. They seemed a bit leading IYSWIM

I imagine te result of the survey will be that the company will be able to state something like "89% of teens think contact lenses are better than glasses for sport and self confidence". (Or whatever)

I agree with others that the study seemed very biased, and I have worked in both academic and market research previously.

I would be interested in knowing which company is trying to peddle contacts to children who is the client that is funding the research.

My DD2 is just turning 13 (but I out down she is 12 cos currently she is...) but she's desperate for contacts. She's not ready for contacts- way too lazy to take care of them!

Hi...thanks for all the responses so far.

We are really after more responses from slightly older children now and I have amended the title to reflect that. Ideally aged 13+.

I've also amended the op so its clear the survey is about various aspects of wearing contacts. Appreciate this does potentially raise it as an issue for some parents/children. It's not an advert but is aimed at finding out what teens really think about contacts vs glasses themselves rather than just asking what parents think. All comments taken on board.

I filled in the survey with my DD. My DD has had contact lenses for approx 1 year now - she is 15. She loves them for school and sport but often chooses to wear her glasses in the evenings/weekends. I have worn contacts since I was 18 - which is nearly 30 years!

birds I wish I had read the whole survey before sitting down with dd. I suppose I could have stopped but she is a good reader and whilst we were reading the first question together I know she was already silently skipping on ahead so it was too late.
We finished the survey (honestly) and she skipped back up to bed. (CLUTCHING THE ATHLETICS MEDAL SHE HAD WON WHILST WEARING GLASSES!!)

sanityawol I had to explain to dd about contacts too and her reaction was much the same

I have been thinking about this survey for the past few days and have come to realise that it annoyes me and I regret doing it.
Dd was not really aware of contacts and was certainly not aware of any negative connotations towards wearing glasses in relation to appearance / peer acceptance / sports etc.
I feel that by asking her these questions I have put doubt about her glasses and how she looks in her mind. Something she never worried about before (I have worn glasses all my life, she sees them as the norm) and now she has done this survey it has made her see glasses differently.
I feel this was more of an advertising campaign than an honest survey due to the way the questions were clearly in favour of contacts and painting glasses in a more negative light.

Agree that questions were very leading and biased, as well as heavily focused on appearance.

Both DH and I are full-time speccy and have never worn contacts, so glasses are the norm here. I guess that may have coloured her view on whether glasses are detrimental to appearance (she doesn't think they are).
