This is the feedback thread for the 120 Mumsnet users who have a child aged 3 months to 6 years who suffers with dry, rough skin or nappy rash and have been testing La Roche-Posay Circaplast Balm B5. Cicaplast Balm B5 is a multi-purpose repairing balm that soothes, restores and protects babys’ delicate skin.

Selected testers were sent 2 x 40ml tubes of Cicaplast Balm and were asked to use it with their child for dry, rough skin flare-ups or for treating nappy rash for a month.

I found the balm was light and not greasy or sticky. It doesn’t have a strong smell. It was easy to apply, we didn’t have to use a lot because it rubbed in well and was absorbed quickly.

Yes it has improved a lot. My son had dry skin on his arms, legs, back and front / stomach. This balm has made such a big difference even in a short time.

We noticed an improvement within 2-3 days. I am confident that with continued use the balm will continue to make a difference and improve my sons skin even more.

Yes. There has been a massive improvement in my sons skin since we have been using this balm. He has suffered with dry skin on his arms, legs, back and front / stomach from a young age. Doctors refused to prescribe anything as they said it wasn’t bad enough, and we have tried many other products to try and improve his skin, none of which ever helped or worked. This product has reduced how dry his skin is and leaves it feeling soft and moisturised, instead of dry and rough.

1. Would you recommend Cicaplast B5 Multi-Purpose Repairing Balm to a friend and why?

I would definitely recommend this balm to anyone because it is the only product I have found that has actually worked and made a considerable difference and improvement to my sons dry skin. We will be continuing to use this product for as long as we need to, and will always make sure we have some at home in the future.
My husband and I both also have some dry skin. Now the trial is over, as we have some balm left we plan to try it on ourselves as well. We are certain it will help us as much as it has helped our son.

I saw an overnight improvement in my child's rough and scaly skin above her hips, that had been causing her itchiness and discomfort.

Finding over the counter products that do exactly what they say on the tin can be a matter of trial and error, so I would happily take the workload out of this process for friends by recommending Cicaplast B5 Multi-Purpose Repairing Balm. My daughter's rough skin had perhaps not been bad enough to warrant a trip to the doctor, and in the past we have been given enormous tubs of emollients from GPs when in fact we only needed a smaller tube like this one. The additional bonus of this balm is that it is helping to soothe all of our chapped hands after all the extra washing they are getting right now.

I have been using the balm on my DS who is 3 and who gets really bad nappy rash. I really like the texture. It spreads on really easily, absorbs well and I think it is very moisturising. I prefer it to some other creams which are very difficult to apply and feel as though they will really dry the skin out.

Yes the balm really calms down the nappy rash and it goes away a lot quicker than when I use other creams. I have noticed that there is a longer gap between flare ups and I think this is due to the balm.

I noticed after I’d put it on 2-3 times.

Yes I would recommend this. I really was despairing about my DS’s nappy rash and this has improved it so much. From reading other comments I see that it can improve other skin irritations too and so if I knew someone had a child with skin irritations (and bad nappy rash of course) I would mention this. It is really easy to apply and it feels fresh and moisturising. I think the price is good as well particularly because I have noticed that I don’t have to use very much of the balm for it to have an effect so I think that is good value for money.

(Testing on my own eczema and my toddler's nappy rash and facial dry skin patches.) I really liked the texture of this, it's a joy to apply and not at all sticky. It feels moisturising when it goes on.

It seemed to work well for nappy rash - one day there was slightly broken skin and it healed up after two applications. It wasn't as helpful for my eczema, but good as a general moisturiser to stop it getting too dry.

It's a nice texture and dried to a kind of powdery finish which I think helps keep it on.

It didn't touch his bum rash unfortunately but it did help with a patch of stubborn eczema that had shown up behind his knees.

I thought the texture of the balm was soft, more like an emollient than a balm, and I found the application easy. It seemed to absorb well.

It’s really thick, and I worried it wouldn’t spread well when I first looked at it. My fears were totally unfounded, a little dot spread well and sunk in completely, leaving the skin feeling soft & moisturised, but without any stickiness or residue.

Yes, it’s the item of its type that I’m most likely to recommend. It’s a lovely product to use, nicely non-scented, and feels luxurious - I really felt I was giving my baby a lovely, soothing treat. Most importantly, i felt it’s efficacy was better than competitors, and that results were delivered without compromise.

Yes, the patches would persist sometimes because the cream we previously used would not completely heal the irritation, causing dc to scratch again, taking us back to square 1. With LRP cream the sore areas were comfortable enough that he would leave them, allowing them to heal completely.

Fantastic! I was expecting very thick and heavy cream but this isn’t the case. This cream is relatively light and easy to apply. It’s slightly shiny for very short time after applying but absorb quickly.

Yes, definitely. I’ve used this cream on both of my children and myself and we all have noticed a huge difference in our skin.

We’ve noticed difference very quickly. Firstly gives a huge relief on any dry, irritated and itchy patches. Secondly improves the condition of the skin in a longer run.

No. I also tried it on my 7 year old son after he developed irritation due to the cold weather. The cream did not help and he came out with small red spots where I had applied it.

Really good. DD6 has been having problems with badly chapped skin on her hands (raw, red, painful, difficult to get her to wash them) and we had been using Sudocrem but getting her to sit still while it sinks in was...challenging. The Cicaplast balm is rich but sinks in really quickly so we don't have to worry about it coming off on her clothes, books, the furniture etc.

Absolutely. The chapped skin has cleared up completely.

By the second day I'd say

I mean, it certainly healed quicker than it had with the Sudocrem or my own hand cream - I don't know whether it was preventative in any way if that's what the question is asking? We kept using it until it cleared up and it hasn't come back but suspect that's as much due to less time outdoors now that we aren't doing the school run etc.

1. Would you recommend Cicaplast B5 Multi-Purpose Repairing Balm to a friend and why?

I definitely would, for smallish areas. I don't know whether I'd use it as my usual nappy cream, for example, as it's definitely pricier than my usual options - maybe if my baby had a particularly bad nappy rash. I'd see it as more like Savlon, for flare-ups, and I think it will be my go-to choice for this purpose now. I'd feel comfortable putting it on my younger child, and would probably use it myself as well, so I think it's a good option to have in the medicine cupboard.

Yep, it's done a great job on both my girls, a noticeable improvement overnight when I put it on at bedtime. It's cleared up a rash on my daughter face.
