Live webchat with Holly Willoughby and her sister Kelly, Wednesday 19 June, 2-3pm

RachelMumsnet · 17/06/2013 08:57

Holly Willoughby and sister Kelly are joining us for a webchat on Wednesday 19th June at 2-3pm.  Holly and Kelly always dreamt of writing a story together since their childhood when they would make up stories and dress up and perform for their parents. Their dream has come true as their first book School for Stars: First Term at L'etoile is being published on 20th June. Set in a performing arts boarding school, the story is a perfect mix ofGlee and X Factor but with all the classic charm of Ballet Shoes and Malory Towers; full of midnight feasts, makeovers, dares, drama and dance.

Holly is best known for presenting ITV1's flagship daytime programme This Morning as well as prime-time shows Surprise Surprise and The Voice.  She won a Children's BAFTA award for best presenter in 2006. Kelly has always dreamt of being an author and is delighted to be realising her dream with her sister.

Come and chat to Holly and Kelly on Weds 19th at 2pm, but if you're unable to join us at that time, post your question in advance to this thread.

Holly and Kelly will also be signing copies of their new book after school next Thursday 20th June at 4.15pm in Harrods Toy Kingdom.  Find out more.

Lynne Featherstone was excellent.

Holly Willoughby had the chance to get herself taken seriously by her target audience, but she blew it Hmm

If you're reading this, Holly, it's not too late to claw it back. Start a thread, deal with people's concerns and they're far more likely to buy your books.

Lynne Featherstone who is a politician just did a franker and wildly more informative and interesting web chat than this.

Lynne F is 'selling' something - everyone who does a web chat is - but have a look at hers and feel the difference.

Exactly Line well said.

I just clicked on Holly Willoughby's personal website.

As of now, the link for Celebrity Juice is less than two inches away from the very child-friendly picture of School for Stars book. The CJ link is pink and gives no warning that it is adult content.

If HW is prepared to take absolutely no responsibility for this, and blame parents if a child clicks the 'wrong' thing as a result of this strange juxtaposition promoted by her, then for me that is very revealing about HW.

she clearly wasn't going to risk a public slating by answering some of the more in depth questions.

Why would she have been slated for this?

The exact opposite is true - she is being slated for not answering them!!!

She would, IMVHO, have commanded a lot more respect if she had done anything other than promote her book.

Incidentally, I have no objection to her pushing her book - I know that's why she was on MN - but a little bit of interest in MNetters and their questions would have been a bit more considerate/respectful of her 'audience'.

YY to Katie Hopkins, but the real one. Not that hideous monster she portrays on TV.

Yes to Katie Hopkins

Smoking doesn't bother me on the whole but I struggle to see how a smoker can be a role model to children.

Indeed it is fairisle, indeed it is! I think I was the right sort of era for the earlier programmes, which is why I know about them, and now have DC who watch The Voice! Can't get her off my bloody telly these days!
What with her and Pip monopolising all the jobs, no wonder there aren't enough left for the rest of the population Grin

fairisleknitter · 20/06/2013 00:28

I admit I have missed most of her programmes, she's prolific!

Ahah the lingo is creeping out into the wider world!

Yes I have! And you obviously have too! Grin

Obviously I am referring to Ministry of Mayhem, CD:UK, TM, The Voice, DOI, family sort of stuff she has presented in the past. Just that she hasn't been pinned to any scandals or whatever. I like her on TV. And on CJ. I don't care that she seems vacuous or a bit bland to some, or that she writes (or doesn't write?) childrens books YET seems to have a job which is more suited to adult viewing. She's making a living and doing very well out of it. Oh, and I don't give a toss that she smokes, so do I.

I am responsible for my own children, and what they watch on TV or look at on the internet. If my DDs in time want to research things on the internet, I will deal with the consequences. I think there are a lot more scary things to be found online than HW giggling about blowjobs and tits ;)

And no, i'm not a scouser!

fairisleknitter · 19/06/2013 23:39

Bedmonster I must have missed her wholesome public image!

I think the target audience are here - I found MN while searching for children's book recommendations.

Are you a fellow scouser since you're made up?Smile

"but she has a very wholesome public image"

Have you ever seen Celebrity Juice bedmonster?

Report
bedmonster · 19/06/2013 23:16

Well, at the risk of being a shallow cow, I am made up, she answered my superficial question about her pretty necklace Grin which I have seen her wearing for bloody ages! And I still love it and wish she would loan to me for a special occasion!

This was the first webchat I have watched and didn't expect it to be anything different. She was here to publicise a book which she and her sister wrote (I don't know who wrote what bits, I don't care, i'm not going to read it, what with being nearly 30), and she clearly wasn't going to risk a public slating by answering some of the more in depth questions.

Some of the questions I admit, I would have liked to have seen her tackling, but she has a very wholesome public image which she would be silly to jeapordise by answering. And they were only on for an hour which isn't a huge amount of time. I like what I see of Holly, don't know much about her sister, but they were here to promote their book (whether or not it was the right target audience with the members of this particular site being a fair bit older than 8), and I doubt they were begging to come on MN to flog it.

I like SM's list too.

I would LOVE Katie Hopkins to come and do a web chat.

I'm sure it would be very civilised.

That's a good point justgive I hadn't thought about outside the home Shock well that's my opinion flipped the other way. She definitely should not have links to both on her website!

Report
Sparklingbrook · 19/06/2013 21:51

But that's it. Your Dc should be able to look at HW's web page and not have a link to CJ if she want to promote the book to children. Confused Children should be able to Google their favourite authors.

JustGiveMeFiveMinutes · 19/06/2013 21:48

How old are your dc AmyFarrahFowlerCooper?

Are you sure you'll always be able to stand over your dc and supervise them? Do they never visit friends who have access to the internet? Parents have a terrible task of trying to control what their dc see and the media shouldn't be able to simply abrogate their responsibities by blaming parents. Everybody has a role to play in protecting children.

i hope mn simply does not become vehicle for relentless self promotion
inviting on lightweights and then gushing at them and asking effervescent questions is dull

I'd like to see in no particular order
anthea turner
Kate Hopkins
karren brady
alan sugar
Robert peston
Jenny murray

I agree scottishmummy. Some of those posters were new.

It's interesting that on HW's website, she's advertising the book and there are links to the latest CJ episode on the iplayer. As far as I know, this would be accessible at anytime (non-watershed) and by anybody.
