Help us to protect children from sexual images in public

Child Eyes is campaigning hard to get sexual images out of children's sight. Porn in the form of lad's mags, The Sport, The Sun page three and more are bombarding our children's lives and parents are struggling. Mumsnet lads mags campaign was fab but not the heat is off it is worse than ever. We need the Government to step up legislation and MAKE retailers put children above profits.

Yes please support this Mumsnet! My ds has just turned 3 and just started showing an interest in the photos in newspapers - I'm dreading his first questions about the highly sexualised front page photos on display in lots of shops. My lovely local newsagents keep all these papers well out of sight but I can't say the same for local supermarkets. I can't believe how many people have to see those horrible pornographic front covers of the Sport etc in shops because of a small number of people who want to buy them. It's rubbish.

As a mother and teacher, I fully support the work of the Child Eyes campaign. I totally support Child Eyes, it's a brilliant and long overdue campaign. A few years ago parents sucessfully lobbied for supermarkets to stop displaying sweets at children's eye-level at checkouts. This campaign should be as easy to understand and as easily dealt with as that one.
David Cameron, with his 'turn the page' comment gives 100% responsibility to the parents. Ok parents, let's take it!! Let's all sign the petition and complain to supermarkets and turn newspapers over and kick up a big stink until the government is forced to take us seriously! And Mumsnet, your support would make it happen quicker!

That video :( isn't it essentially child abuse allowing children to see sexualised images seeing as most of those images are pornographic.

Essentially the media is teaching my son that women are sex objects to be ogled at.

I was in primark yesterday and there was a sweatshirt with a girl in a very skimpy bikini in a porn pose on it at child height, the manager didn't see what I was complaining about when I asked for it to be moved. She just kept saying it's only boobs and do I object to breastfeeding. I actually had to explain to her the difference between feeding your child (i.e. completely natural and what boobs are for) and showing sexualised borderline porn images of women beside children's clothing.

It is time to revisit the 2010 Lads Mag campaign but this time include newspapers. I do not know why newspapers were not considered at the time, perhaps their content and covers have got worse(?) Certainly retailers need to refocus on what they actually signed up to in 2010 and consider what is seemingly long forgotten in 2013.

I am fed up of constantly pointing out to my local petrol station that Zoo and Nuts should not be on the lower shelves. They look basically like porn mags, and I don't want to have to look at them, let alone allow my children to see them. Porn, men's 'lifestyle' mags, The Sport, The Sun, should all be top shelf, or behind modesty wraps.

I think the problem is we see so much sexualised content that we are becoming immune to it. But look around, with fresh eyes, with child eyes (ah, that's where they got the name from!) and you realise it just isn't on. How is being surrounded by a sexual wallpaper going to affect our children? A few judges recently have cited internet porn as behind juvenile sex crimes. I know that's the extreme end of the scale, but...

Self-regulation is not working. Something needs to be done.

I completely agree that Mumsnet should be supporting the Child Eyes campaign.

Mumsnet this is such worthwhile well-needed campaign. The government has left the displaying of sexualised images up to retailers to police themselves, this was two years ago! From the video you can see that retailers are not taking any note of the guidelines. As a result parents complain when they pop into shops to get a few groceries when their child's eye has been caught by Moshi Monsters displayed right next to the highly sexual image on The Sport. There is a time and a place. This culture of 'sex sells' is getting out of hand. The losers here are the children, and their parents. Parents are not treated receptively when they do have the courage to say something in shops. It is an outrage that it's been allowed to get this dreadful state. Change is well-overdue and desperately needed to protect Child Eyes.

Morrissons already do this. It's a very cheap, low tech solution and a complete no-brainer. All I ask is that the powers that be include 'The Sun', 'The Star' and especially 'The Sport' when they decide what is to be displayed behind modesty covers. The fact that they purport to be "newspapers" means that they get away with murder.
