Hello!

Wondering if anyone fancied getting a new group off the ground, it looks like all others are full right now.

Let me know if you fancy it and once we've got a few members we can get a group and and running.

BUMP!!! that's for anyone who's not on FB. Please check your PM's :)

I'm still here! No idea with names though.

Report
weedle · 05/06/2011 21:28

Right - we need a name for our new group!

Most people wanted the FB group so I'm going to set that up so hopefully we can get in touch with one another easily, it's a bit dusty and forgotten here at the moment.

If you don't have FB then we can still use this thread so you won't be left out at all. The FB group will be secret so only those in the group can see it and join/post etc.

Please post here anyway so it keeps on our 'threads I'm on' tab

Thanks Grin

The book i was going to choose is Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. But i see it is described as Scince fiction. Now i would say i dont like that genre either but i LOVED this book, IN fact read it and then went straight back to the beginning. It is about time travel, going back to the time of slavery in the south of America. Try looking it up on Amazon and read the crits and see what you think.
Otherwise i might choose One thousand white women by Jim Fergus, have a look at that too
Trying to pick books that are not so run of the mill
Have read and really enjoyed The Crying Tree but could read it again

Just read the synopsis, that book sounds great, Im up for that!

Im not really into Will Self, sorry, but Ive never finished a book of his so perhaps Im missing something!

Really looking forward to this! [cgrin]

Oops - posted too soon!

I was thinking about sending 'The Crying Tree' by Nassem Rakha. Has anyone read this?

I'll be offline for a few days so could people keep bumping the thread or poking people on the list (just in case people are drowning in pimms and wine royal wedding fever) please? Grin

Report
chwedl · 28/04/2011 21:23

May I ask no heavy sci-fi either please?! I just can never get into anything that's so surreal it's unbelievable. Sorry for anyone that loves these kind of books. Better get deciding on possible books then eh :)

Room for one more?

Report
weedle · 26/04/2011 21:05

No I think we have a thread for each book - there's some examples of this further down - eg piebalds book - ab by xy

As each person reads it they comment.

At least I hope so or else I'll get thoroughly confused!

Do we wait to the end of the year to discuss the books-THere is no way i wil beable to remember anything, i struggle to remember books at the end of them let alone months later

Hi everyone, thanks to those who replied to my messages - hopefully I can answer your questions. But I will warn you that I've not done this before, so if you know better please tell me!

From what I can gather is most of the book swap groups have 12 members, each member nominates a book and posts it on to the next person in the list. So 1st posts to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd and 12th to 1st etc. We have a month to read the book and then post it on to the same person so after a year every member has read all the books.

We then have a thread for each book so people can give their opinion on each book as they read them.

We'll agree a list of 'no go' genres - for example I don't want to read childhood abuse memoirs or 'mis-lit' as it's known. Anything not on the list is fine, a mix of genres etc is positively encouraged [bugrin]

I personally have no preference as to whether people send a book that they have previously read or just one that they like the look of.

The people who have expressed an interest are below:

dashboard

piebald

goodbyemrschips

queenbathsheba

maypole1

chwedl

BitterChocolateEggScoffer

weedle

So obviously we're up to 8 members - shall we say we'll set a deadline of 1st of May for confirmation of new members and book details? That way we'll know where we're headed so we can get started asap?

Hopefully as we add our 'no go genres' and book choices it'll bump this so it stays in our 'threads I'm on' section and people know we're looking for new members.

Also, if I've stepped on any toes or am talking rubbish just shout! [bugrin]

Just got to decide what book I'd like to send...
