Testosterone gel.... how much is a dose, and how do you apply it?

Hi all, so my GP recommended I try out some testosterone gel from a sachet.
The gel is prescribed off license to me, as it's formulated for men.
It comes in a sachet, which amounts to 5g, a single daily dose for a man. There used to be a testosterone for women but they don't make it anymore.
I'm on a bioidentical hrt and don't want to take triblone, as I'm happy with the regime I'm on.

My GP recommends a small amount every day. But how small is a small amount? It sort of melts to a liquid when I squeeze it out on my finger, and it's difficult to see how much is there. She recommends I rub it onto my lower abs, but it's all drippy by then...

So, my questions are:

If you use it, how do you do it?

How much do I use.... should this sachet last me a week or 10 days? Obviously I won't need a sachet a day, but how do you measure your amount? Have you a handy spoon, or measure?

Where do you put yours!?

What are the time scales when I could see a difference in energy levels?

Has anyone had any side effects?
Beards, acne, bulging muscles, speeding tickets, toyboys, an appreciation for sports cars
You know, am I going to be able to join a barbershop quartet with my new basso profundo voice, or will I still be able to hit the high notes of Celine Dion not that I want to sing her stuff but you get the picture

Is there a long term higher risk of cancer.... if so what kind, and does anyone know any stats?

TIA fellow vipers ladies

Oh. Apologies for ignorance, but why is that an issue?

No problem! Synthetic testosterone just isn't as natural and healthy as synthetic one. The same with the estrogene. Bioidentical hormones are having chemical formula which is 100% identical with the hormones produced by our bodies, so the body actually can't see a difference, when added from outside. Result- bioidentical hormones are giving almost zero side effects and more health benefits.

Oh I see. Does that mean this one is no good for you then? 😞

yes :-( I'm looking for Testogel, or Testimgel, they are bioidentical.

I would recommend also taking a good CBD product to help with menopause. As it has amazing gene transcription modulation for all systems. My ex had her period come back after she lost it for a while after using Quicksilver Scientific Hemp Oil is the best we have found in over six years of trying every CBD product available. The delivery system is key as it’s not a very bio available molecule. They also have other products we’ve had great luck with as well. Once you experience how amazing CBD is it’s easier to work on your health from there, we also give to our kids for growing pains etc.

I recommend getting Hemp oil from Quicksilver Scientific (CBD) as will help balance your hormones and posibly bring your period back(as it did for my ex at 50) Don’t waist time with other products CBD wise as this one works the best we have ever found(over 6years of trying every product out there) Start with 1-2pumps a day and go up from there. Increase water as you might detox some as it will help all your systems balance out.

Maybe you need an prescription from a UK gynae @Diana65 ... the doctor who runs menopausematters.co.uk might be able to help you?

Thanks everyone for your input on this thread.
I’m still using the testogel sachets, but only intermittently as I was breaking out in cystic acne again. Spent my teens covered in acne.
I’m now using ovestin cream as well topically for atrophy. I find it’s good to keep an open mind about the fluctuations over time and to be flexible about changing doses and adding on other elements.

I have high testosterone anyway and work in STEM. I am very muscular and know what you’re saying about muscle mass and skin tightness if you stop using the gel. If I don’t use the gel I find my skin looks a bit like cellulite is coming through.. I’ve never had cellulite before.

I’m also intolerant to progesterone and spent the post natal time under a shadow, after a fantastic pregnancy where I had a huge amount of energy and libido. Also quite depressed as a teen thinking back, so that was an interesting observation @Janibabes

I use utrogestran caps 100mg as a vaginal pessary for 10 days a month. If I take 200mg orally for 14 days I get very anxious snappy and quite arguementative so I don’t ... yearly uterine scans show my endometrium isn’t thick, and I have withdrawal bleeds every 30 days.

I once went on nogestimate a progestin only pill, and was suicidal in a week.
I use the minimum amount of bioidentical progesterone as a result, and find I can tolerate it well.

I don’t spend any time even thinking about natural remedies anymore @KMan.. IMO there’s no point even posting about them on this thread I think as we’re all committed to our prescribed pharmaceutical grade hrt regimens.
I’m sure some other women, somewhere, would benefit from your second hand experience of unregulated oils and herbs though.

KMan7, thank you for suggesting us CBD oil for menopause symptoms. I also tried any possible herbal thing, before HRT finally gave me my life back.
I tried the best possible quality CBD oils too, even recommended by my GP, but it didn't help with any single symptom. Smoking weed is having at least relaxing effect, but during using CBD oil I didn't notice any effect. It only costed me a lot of money, so I'm also done with natural remedies...

Hi Allicia, I was put on Tostran by my GP when testogel was unavailable. I had only taken it for a week before I saw my consultant. He said as it was 2% strength it was too strong as 1 pump is 10mg and that is the dosage for a man. He said it should be 1/3 of 1 pump for a woman. Now testogel is available I'm back on that. I make 1 sachet (5g/50mg) last me 6 days. It works well for me. Hope that helps

Has anyone used this UK site for Testogel? You need to have an online “consultation”, but wouldn’t be that difficult to give the right answers I’d have thought 😏

Hy Ladies I'm new to exploring the possibilities of testosterone I have been taking Elleste Duet Conti for 3 and half months now. This is my third type of HRT. My first one was a cyclical and that caused endometrial hypertrophy and polyps[that's all been dealt with now though] the second type my GP put me on was a bit progesterone heavy[that was a nightmare!] I'm not great with progesterone it can make me feel very premenstrual, I think I may have been intolerant to progesterone for most of my life judging by Proff studd's theories]

I am over the other side of the menopause but for me my symptoms returned exponentially so I gave in and Tries HRT. So after the aforementioned hiccups I still have a lot of muscle and tendon pain and my libido....what libido. It used to be very high so when it dropped a bit when the peri/ menopause began I had a lot of leeway. However now it is non existent and my current HRT does snot seemed to have helped Sad: Haloween Sad
I've tried many different ways to train to avoid muscle spasm and pain that I am getting. My sleep pattern is good now but I still have low energy. Its almost as if my body has become exercise intolerant.

I am now exploring the possibility of Testosterone. It seems that if it worked it would address some of my residual problems. I have done a lot of reading and feel better now that some of the misconceptions have been explained a little. Looking though this site there are still some floating around about deep voices, extreme hairiness etc but I believe the dosage is so low the chances of the typical Male traits manifesting seems pretty low. I think the suppliers have to just say what these side affect are to just cover themselves . I think unless you go completely mad with you prescription you should be OK.

I was interested in the ladies that have managed to get it form their GP where are you based. I have absolutely no idea if my GP prescribes it . Un fortunately I feel that I have had to educate my GP every step of the way regarding my HRT. I am a health care professional so have the confidence to approach but I still find it pretty intimidating to be honest ! When you are in the throws of Menopausal symptoms you confidence isn't exactly at its peak.
I have found a couple of brilliant clinics but they all seem to be in either London or Bristol [Dr Louise Newson] though I did find one in Birmingham which is nearer to me[the stoke-on-Trent area] though I've lost the link. so have to search again. I'm so envious of those of you living down south Envious: Envy

The prices that are been quoted for the private sector unfortunately might just price me out of trying to seek treatment. If I had more energy I could maybe do some overtime to pay for it! I don't have private health care unfortunately. Doe anyone know if Private practitioners allow you to pay in instalments.
Sorry I've rambled a bit but it was nice to find a thread relating to my problem and nice to see that some ladies have found a sympathetic and expert practitioner. It gives me a bit of hope Smiley face: Smile

Hi Mariainuk62,
In answer to your question I am based in York and my GP prescribes Testogel on NHS. Boots stock it so get it from them.
I would say that I have had a slight increase in body hair but nothing unmanageable.
I also train and found it was my exhaustion that led to being 'exercise intolerant. Now I'm absolutely fine as the testosterone increased my energy and muscle strength. Also it has improved the collagen so areas that were saggy/cellulite are much firmer. Previously I was always needing the loo too which was a pain! Now I can hold my water for ages!!! Collagen again, I guess.
The big difference is libido and lubrication- all much improved. I feel like my old self again.
There's no reason for your GP to not prescribe unless she's just awkward. Hope this helps and good luck😁

Hy Janibabes,
I have booked an appointment to see my GP this Friday. She has been quite open minded but I've always felt that she was floundering a bit as I'm not sure its her special interest. But her ego isn't so big that she wont listen thank goodness Smile.
I did ask the receptionist to ask prior to the appointment to find out whether she would consider it. It will at least give her a bit of time to read up on it Grin
She knows I'm medical so she knows that if I ask for something I've usually researched it properly.
So fingers crossed.
So pleased it worked out for you. This menopause is a bit of a swine isn't it ? Grin

It bloody is! Just to let you know specifics - I use oestrogen 3x pumps, the usual is 2 pumps I think, but after prof Studd did a bone scan I was found to have osteopenia in my lumbar spine and hip. After taking oestrogen since Aug 2017 my hip has improved by 8% and is no longer osteopenic yay! but my spine still is slightly. I have one sachet of testosterone last 6 days- you can play around with it to find what suits re libido. I found that making it last just 4 days turned be into a raging nympho!!! (My poor husband! He went from zero for YEARS to all the time. He threatened to put a triple lock on the shed lol). I also use Utrogestan as a pessary for 10 days at beginning of each month. I was taking it orally but as I'm intolerant to it, it sends into a raging psycho ( bit of an exaggeration but you get the idea!) So prof suggested using it as a message as it will mitigate the symptoms. Have only done 1 month and it seemed better. Hope you get sorted. Let me know if you need anything else x
