Menopause

Aching, stiff legs and arms - menopause symptoms?

Zakinthos · 17/09/2011 22:30

I am 48 and am experiencing some other symptoms of menopause/perimenopause, but for the last few weeks my legs and arms and whole body really are really aching and stiff. It feels like exercise soreness except that I haven't done anything different to normal. I am quite fit and walk the dog daily and play tennis regularly. But I am starting to feel old especially when getting up from sitting down for a while or getting out of the car. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, does it go away?!

Polly, some of us do start peri late,Im57 started hot flushes beginning of the year and now trying to find the right HRT for me.
Bit unfair, started early, needed IVF(which also usually bring Meno on earlier) ,my mum also had a late menopause, though symptom free.

Gracious, I have all these symptoms too.

Sometimes I feel as though I am going mad, or am really seriously ill even though I have had a full MOT through GP. Well have had 2 actually as also paid for one through Bupa.

My bones and joints ache, feel bloated and nauseous occasionally, and generally feel old with no oomph or libido. I have no energy but can walk the dog easily for a long time.

It’s so frustrating...

Recently started HRT after resisting for over 3 years however, may I possibly suggest pilates or yoga as I find they do help with relaxing and stretching the body and in the yoga you get a relaxation & meditation at the end which always leaves me feeling brighter. If you can't make a class, plenty of videos on youtube. A difficult time of year with the short dark days which doesn't help either.

For the last year I have been suffering with really sore aching muscles and joints but put it down to the menopause as I have pretty much every meno symptom listed. I happened to mention it at the doctors the other day and had blood tests done.

It turns out that I have vitamin D deficiency and aching muscles and joints is a massive symptom of this. I just assumed it was meno.

The doctor said that testing for vitamin D deficiency is usually the first thing they look at when patients complain of aching muscles and joints.

So glad I've found this thread - its pushed me to make a drs appointment; I've been aching all over for a few weeks now, and actually hate waking up as it's so much worse then - I can't move in bed without my muscles hurting, and getting up is ridiculous, I can hardly stand up. I know I have a sedentary desk job and am through the menopause, but everyone else that applies to surely can't feel this bad!

I've been getting restless legs at night, could that be part of it as well?

Yep sounds like the start of meno to me. I'm 30 been in meno for 3 years (cancer) started with flushes, then the night sweats I put my aches and pains down to treatment but soon realised after bloods and speaking with my gp and oncologist I was in the full swing of menopause.

It took me 2 different types of pills and 2 types of patches before I find what worked for me. It does get easier but everyone is different, yoga/Pilates helps me, keeping a exercise regime to some degree even if it is only a 5 to 10 min walk around the block some days and nothing others. Just to get blood flowing to you joints, keeping hydrated, switching to decaff was also a huge help, (yes i understand the horror of them words!!!!) and as silly as it sounds so obviously listening to your body. If your aching don't push yourself too much rest evening primrose supplements can help with the flushes, I don't know why but it does, cod liver for your joints, you can get a supplement especially formulated for menopause but I've not used it personally as I don't know if it works, I've found what is working for me and not switching it up yet. funnily enough none of my friends, or mother are going though it, mother in law is only now starting hers, so im kind of alone in it, These are just a few things that have helped me. Smile
Hope you don't suffer to much

Hi I am 50 years old and I have had aching joints all over for 6 months now, It is especially sore in morning trying to get out of bed, lying in bed can be really uncomfortable also. I have attended chiroprator and 2 physio's 1st physio said I had bilateral pain and scietic nerve problem she said I should use hydro pool as much as possible used it for 2 months or so but no improvement also had couple sports massages that was waste of money. I got an appointment from NHS Physio and she checked all my joints and said I cant see anything wrong, I obviously said to her I do need to loose about 4 stone in weight and exercise. she said yes that is what you need to do . I have been taking Ibuprofen tablets 3 times a day for few months.. I called the doctor last week she prescribed me with Ibuprofen 5% Gel to use and she also sent me for knee X-rays last Friday I will have to wait 2 weeks on results. I am feeling so frustrated with all the pain. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks

Have you tried hrt? It helps with collagen and estrogen we lose after meno. I was in pain a year ago and everything back to normal with hrt.

Hi I am 49 with many of the above complaints, no period for 7 months to date, aches and pains from head to toe, but I opt for natrual remedies. Please ladies check this page out on Facebook, Happy Hormones, its natrual and it works. Read womens testimonies to taking a natrual powder once a day, and watch your ailments wash away over time. I am not rich, i lead a day to day normal working life, as we( my family and I) can get lol..This is a miricle powder put together by a man yes a man lol.. please try!! a little expensive but well, worth the money spent.

Oh my goodness. I’m so happy to read your posts about aching legs and joint pain. Everything you said - it’s me. Cannot get my socks on - ridiculous. Did anyone find a treatment or way to manage these symptoms?

Have you been tested for vitamin d deficiency? As what you have just said was me! I was vitamin d deficient and have been taking vitamin d and has helped enormously. Maybe Bettertobehealthy can help you, as she posts a lot about vitamin d.

Has anyone had all these aches and pains and come out the other side of it and found that they ease off?

If there is a light at the end of the tunnel, please share.

I just went on HRT (oestrogen gel) this week. Within 48 hours of starting it I have no muscle/joint ache, which I've had since my late 30s almost constantly. It's like a fucking miracle! Wholeheartedly recommend a chat with your doctor and as long as you don't have any risk factors going on HRT. I'm 46.

@TheSandgroper This was the primary reason i started to take HRT - gel & Utrogestan. All aches and pains disappeared within a month.

@Namaste6. I rather meant either not using hrt or finishing it after a period of time and finding life ok.

Does one need to be on hrt of some sort until the end of time?

@TheSandgroper. I am still on it and intend to take it for as long as i can. Check out - The Truth About HRT, by Liz Earle and Louise Newson on Instagram. Hope that helps. 🙏

Just saw this thread - I had been having these symptoms for about 2 years when I went to the doctor - who recommended physio who said I needed to exercise more. Could hardly put my tights on never mind exercise. Went back to a female doctor who said I was peri menopausal and gave me naproxen for joint pain. Can now go to the gym without any issues at all and am fitter than I was in my 40s (now 53). Got mirena coil in so don't know if I have hit the actual menopause but feel a whole lot better.

I, too am experiencing ribcage pain. It's as though I have a knot in my ribs under my left breast.

Have you gotten any answers or relief?

My joint& muscle pain is horrendous. I could of walked miles with my dog and now can hardly get out of bed in morning. Went to see GP who made an appointment at out HRT clinic, but I had bad palpitations(another symptom) just as she started checking my blood pressure so she was worried, gave me an ECG and then said couldn't prescribe me with HRT! I am aching all over, night sweats, fatigue, the list could go on& on. Periods stopped now a year so I take it I am now in the menopause and symptoms seem to be getting worse. Tried all the herbal tabs, nothing! I really am at my wit's end with it now.

I had this for a few months until a few weeks ago when I read that vitamin D deficiency can cause it. I have been taking Menopace vitamins and Seven Seas Joint Care Active capsules and it has made a difference, the pain and stiffness appears to have reduced quite a lot.
