Low carb shopping list

Can any of you help me with my online shop? Hoping to start low carbing tomorrow. I'm not going to be too strict as I've less than a stone to lose and am mainly doing it for the health benefits.

So far I've got...
Cheese
Eggs
Double cream
Chicken
Sausages
Bacon
Trout
Tuna (tinned)
Nuts
Veg
Mayo
Butter

Anything I'm missing?
Are mixed leaves bags of salad okay? Ditto frozen veg?

CheeseBored the reason the low carb diets go for Greek yogurt rather than natural yogurt is that Greek yogurt is made by squeezing out all the whey and therefore a lot of milk sugar so the carbs are lower and the protein higher gram for gram. I checked the Total and Yeo Valley sites. YV natural yogurt has something like 6.5 grm carb per 100gm. Total is 3.6. Protein wise YV natural comes in at 4.5 grm I think and Total Greek yogurt is 9.something.

What you need to be wary of are Greek style yogurts. They are just natural yogurt thickened up so the carb and protein stays the same as natural yogurt.

High protein will fill you up so that's why low carb goes for Greek!

Oh and Waitrose (yes I know!!) does some yummy Greek yogurt YoGood. It is by Kri Kri and is made in Greece. It has 3.6 grm carb but tastes less 'tangy' and creamier than Total

The reason I'm not going to be too strict is because I already have a very high fat high carb diet but I don't ever seem to put on any weight. I aways eat butter and full fat everything. Plus loads of chocolate/cake/biscuits ect everyday. I eat about 4+ slices of bread a day too. So I'm guessing if I cut out most of the carbs I'll still be able to lose weight? We will soon see I suppose.

I love the Lurpak garlic butter to add to everything
Babybel
Halloumi
Aubergines (parmigiana is great, as is curry)
Shallots instead of onions
Sugar free jelly is lush with double cream
Even more eggs to make hollandaise
And sugar free gum for that yucky mouth feeling

When I first did it, ten years ago, I lost 2 stone. The weight just dropped off! It was so weird tho as I was eating all the things we've always been told are fattening, cheese, cream, butter, fatty meat, avocados, nuts etc and losing wright dramatically.

Sadly I didn't keep it off as I got scared about all the propaganda about fat and eventually drifted back to my current weight. I've lost my fear of all those highest foods tho. They are bloody delicious!

Cheese, that's very true. You can eat as much fat as you want but if you mix it with those kinds of carbs you can end up putting weight ON rather than losing!

with regards to strictness: I've been thinking recently that this is quite a dangerous diet to slip up on.

for example today I have had some yogurt (why is greek deemed better than say Yeo Valley natural stuff?) and a lovely omelette.

but I have just eaten 4 oreos. will that really screw it up? (yes)

Personally I would add
Splenda
Philadelphia cheese
Cocoa powder
( makes a yummy dessert!)

There is also Lite Cranberry juice with hardly any carbs in. Also good to mix with soda water.

Hi Dalmatian, recipe for the 'bread' is as follows. Amounts converted from American cups so look a bit odd:

4 eggs
132g ground flax (made by linwoods. In foil sachet in home baking aisle in sainsburys)
66g ground almonds
1 teaspoon baking powder
4 tablespoons water
Pinch salt

Whisk eggs with water. Mix dry ingredients separately. Mix everything together. It isn't pretty. Scrape/pour into a small loaf tin. Bake at 200c for 25 minutes.

I am happy to be corrected, but I work out the total carb content for the whole loaf to be only 6.46 grams. Amazing.

Celeriac is a whitish root vegetable a bit like a large turnip. It has a lower carb content than most root veg (I think) and can be roasted or mashed like spuds. I cook spuds for the family and sometimes a little celeriac for me, because I miss potato. The rest of the family won't touch it as it tastes different and isn't as flowery in texture as potato. Useful in stews etc. I thought bread would be a struggle too, but actually its only a problem when out and about as picnics are tricky without it. Low carb bread sounds magic!

The low carb bread looks really good. I'll definitely be giving that a go as I think the thing I'll struggle with the most is bread. I'm a total bread addict.

What is celeriac? I've never heard of it Blush

butter and if you like it coconut oil
cauliflower and green leafy vegs
baby sweetcorn and celeriac are lower carb than they taste.
Do you know BIWI is running a five week lc boot camp starting next Monday 21st (see under LC boot camp - there are also lots of helpful lc lists). Thought I would mention it since I found the support at the last one very helpful especially as I was completely new to LC and took a while to get orientated.

Really interested to read your shopping list. I just started another thread in which I was saying how good and easy to make flax and almond bread is. It's only 7g of carbs for a loaf. Maybe worth grabbing the ingredients and trying it. Recipe is on internet if you google 'Londoner low carb bread'

Asda do a Greek yoghurt with extra cream in their Extra Special range. it comes in at 4gr carb/100g and is really rich. I use it as a starter to make my own as I'm not keen on Total and Sainsburys other yoghurts are too high in carb. I don't get out to the shops much and the Asda online service round here is rubbish so I get a carton when I can and then keep saving the culture. I've noticed that its often hidden down the back of the fat free version on the shelves!

I think almond butter is supposed to be better than peanut. Peanuts are quite carby. I find the extra expense helps limit consumption!Grin

Well my shopping came. Asda only sell 2 full fat yoghurts, which I ordered, but they substituted them for fat free versions. Confused

OPs list is pretty much identical to mine.
Black Farmer sausages are good and low carb.
I am partial to a Pepperami now and again.
Decent peanut butter also - read the backs. :)

The lack of decent yogurts in this country drives me nuts. There is basically one full fat yoghurt which is free of sugar. ..total. Have to watch the carbs on that one tho.
The anti sugar message is getting l out there to so I expect to see more brands coming soon.

I've been looking for a low carb yoghurt but asda don't do many Hmm the only total yoghurts they do, are fat free!

Chicken thighs roasted is also an easy meal, with veg or salad
Have a look at the low carb recipe thread, some great suggestions on there

Easy in the nuts, they are high in carbs and fat and it is easy to scarf a lot of them in one sitting (they are my nemesis)

I buy two boxes at a time Dalmatian, I eat a packet everyday at about 11am. They are delicious and no nasties in them at all.

Remember the other thing about low carb is clean eating. If you have to check a label to see what's in what you are eating you should probably not be eating it. Drown your veg in butter and salt, yum yum yum. Grin
