Eyesore vehicle on private land

Hi,

I live on a private road next to a set of 2 garages (neither of which is owned by me but neighbours further along the road). The garage owners have left a vehicle in front of their garage to reserve the parking space. Vehicle has not been used for around 3 years and is full of rubbish (and mold). It has also now been extensively vandalised.

Given that this is private land would council do anything? Neighbours are not approachable at all (think fist fights in the street). They would be likely to object to its removal.

They park their actual cars elsewhere on the street but didn’t want neighbours using it or using it to turn, which had been happening. (Not me I’ll add). A penguin bollard would have been nicer to be fair!

I don’t think they’d be fussed if it was burnt out, windscreen is already caved in. ☹️

Not if it's on private land. It doesn't need to be taxed etc if it's not on the road.

DM has a similar issue, but with a caravan, nor a car. It's falling to pieces, but it's not on the road so either council nor police can help.

It either needs tax and insurance OR it needs a SORN if it's unused and on private land.

What purpose does it serve to leave a car rotting to reserve a space? They can't even use the space!

No idea if legalities but this bit just didn't make sense to me!

The council has a duty to remove abandoned vehicles from land in the open air, even if they are on private land.

It's not abandoned though, it belongs to the neighbour and is on their land

Thanks all, I suspected I might be out of luck. I’m hoping to put my house on the market soon and suspect this will put quite a few people off.

In respect of the council I thought they would only act if car was abandoned ie no one was claiming it? I’ll have to give them a ring on Monday to check.

It's possible there are covenants in the deeds to the house that have restrictions on this kind of thing. However, the only way to enforce them would be to go down the legal route, which she might not want to do if they are volatile.

I suspect there is nothing that can be done unless there was some sort of health risk but I’m hoping others know better - then I can do something about the beaten up car mouldering outside my mum’s house (private road).

You could go down the route of whether the vehicle is appropriately taxed or has a SORN, the DVLA might be interested if it’s not.
