I think this is so sad. I couldn't survive without books, reading is so important.

What a role model, eh?

agree paolosgirl, not only am i not bothered about her never reading a book (which im not suprised by the way.)
i am also uninterested in her partying on some shoe designers boat with mike tyson in a cowboy hat.

i mean really... who cares??

desperate for any amount of tabloid column space.

They're coming over as slightly desperate for ANY media coverage IMO. This was yet another way of getting herself in the papers - or am I being cynical.
This constant need for coverage and exposure is so pathetic that it's hard not to pity her.

Er... they don't Bozza!

You can do a certain amount from TV, radio and mags, but imo you can't get into any subject in any depth unless you read a few books about it. Very few media apart from books can provide you with carefully thought out, properly developed analysis. All other media tend to be restricted by lack of space/ time, whereas books can be as big as necessary.

I suppose the internet is the big new innovation in terms of access to information, critical thought, knowledge etc., but I personally find it very difficult to read on-screen for a couple of hours. I have to print things out if they're more than a few pages.

But how do people learn to read without reading books?

oh come on you cant believe a quote like that surely!

Lemonice, what a sad fact, that you can get a pass mark in English, but never have read a book.

But then I think it's sad that someone doesn't read books anyway.

I find it perfectly believable and unsurprising that VB may never have read a book. Presumably she must have been asked the question and answered it, rather than thrown it out into the interview.

My ds did his gcses last year and got a D in English without ever having read any kind of book in his life. Going to school, doing exams doesn't necessarily mean you have ever read books.

He is now studying in the sixth form.

Then if she plodded her way through, she must have read a book.

Perhaps she doesn't remember? You know like goldfish have a 3 second memory span. That might make it hard to read a book, you turn the page and forget what happened in the last chapter?

But then if she ddidn't get any qualifications, she might never have read one thru'

Haha, that'd have been a good one. Swotty Spice..

I seem to remember reading ages ago that she was quite swotty at school without actually being any good - bit of a plodder.

Not sure why I remember that, or even if it's true - prob just jealous ex-schoolmates making it up...

Does anyone know whether VB actually gained any GCSEs/'O'levels?

I do sometimes read aloud to DS whatever I'm reading. But cultural theory is hard enough to understand bent over it in the library with my full attention and DS just looks at me a though he knows it's all erm..shite..

The hungry caterpillar is more his style.

I bet she's read her own book, over and over and over and over...

Although she didn't write it either did she..

It is quite possible to get through your gcses without reading a book. Many people watch the film, have good notes or are spoonfed good passages which can be used in essays. I should know I used to teach the little buggers. I also got through o level literature without reading Silas Marner because I just couldnt face it at the time. Who'd have thought that I would become an English lecturer,

I use books as a retreat for when life all gets to be too much

Who was it that said 'Books are mighty bloodless substitute for life'. Sam Johnson I think.

Me I'm never without a book but I tell you my life lacks excitment.

I don't care whether Victoria Beckham has read a book or not!

I do agree Caligula - I'm a voracious reader myself (though I do admit the literary standard of my reading matter has declined drastically since having kids). And I don't think it's something to boast about - she is obv. doing it to say "look at me, I'm really really fick I am", and I worry about the effect it will have on kids who do look up to her as a role model. I fully intend to do everything in my power to instill a love of books into my children -and if that doesn't work, i'll just force them to read one a week whilst tehy are under my roof . I just don't recognise taht a non-love of literature always equates with a lack of intelligence

I am frequently too busy reading a book to read to my children
