Agree with Snafu. Crimes of violence against people should be taken much more seriously in terms of sentencing than they are at the moment. Think I said on the other thread that bank robbers are routinely treated much more harshly than rapists.
But we should start by improving detection rates ? it's only a minority of cases that get to court anyway. If potential criminals knew they were likely to be caught, it could be a much more powerful deterrent than the current charade of political parties competing with each other for 'tough on crime' headlines in the Mail.
No idea how you would do this, though.

Edam, I would say that the first step would be to acknowledge that the problem happens. It's easier to ignore these cases rather than act on them.

A couple of months ago I posted a thread asking for messages of support for the families of women and girls who have been raped AND murdered. (it's not that I have a morbid look of the things, they were more than 300 victims at the time and all the murders had been commited in the space of 10 10 years in my former city). I was expecting a better reaction, but very few people cared. I believe if we had the courage to look at these things and try to do something about it, then things could change. But as long as the people decide to ignore them, the things will remain the same.

As a postscript to this... since my last post at that thread at least other 3 women had been killed. Was rather shocked to be at the city in december and everybody seemed more concerned about the bad name the city was getting rather than the crimes themselves

Chandra, I didn't see that thread either and would be grateful for a link. Those of you who think rape should be taken more seriously with regards to sentencing, PLEASE look at the WAR link that I've posted below. We do need to DO SOMETHING rather than just talk about it.

awful - if he serves the minimum of 20 years he will be out at 36 - younger than I am and fully capable of more crimes of a similar nature. What is even more shocking is how he could have done it in the first place and he was only 14 at the time.Imagine being his mother....

Donnie his mother gave him an alibi, she is quite an odd one. One reporter said they had an unnatural relationship with the way they interacted with each other. She lied, commited perjury and forced her other son into a difficult position, should he lie and keep up the alibi or not?

A terrible murder, that boy just has no emotion at all! Hopefully he will never get out.
