How not to behave in a foreign country

So matey here www.facebook.com/dr.emil.kaminski climbs a mountain in a foreign land, like so many backpackers before him.

And he persuades fellow members of the group climbing that it's a good idea to pose naked, piss on the sacred mountain top (you are supposed to 'ask for permission' of the spirits before doing this), and then plaster it all over your public Facebook pages of your half-assed travel-the-world-and-make-crappy-Youtube-videos venture www.facebook.com/Monkeetime?fref=ts

While you are still in said foreign country, in a small town where white people will stick out like a sore thumb.

And then an earthquake killed 18 people on the mountain, which was ascribed to the wrath of the mountain following their behaviour.

Then the others in the group were arrested, while he attempted to hide out

Now he has been arrested as well....

Surely if they post it on Facebook themselves then it was intended to be seen by am audience?

noddy I agree.

I feel sorry for this generation - all their youthful transgressions are documented, sprayed across the Internet and stayed with them forever.

I had plenty of youthful transgressions myself, all happily staying in the undocumented past, where they belong....

Isit, I don't think she is any better or any worse than those who piss in the streets of Majorca/Ibiza or anywhere else. She is just the same as them.

The locals in a lot of places make £££££ from the high jinx in some situations I agree they were disrespectful but I have seen this sort of behaviour in Thailand where they turned a blind eye because the backpackers were paying 3x what the hostels are worth and buying overpriced drinks and souvenirs I think its a storm in a teacup

their real bad luck was an earthquake in an area where superstition is held to be real, and an idiot blogger stirring things up

The world is not a playground provided for rich westerner's "high jinks". It was a shitty thing to do whether or not anyone saw them, so no I won't be shedding many tears on their behalves.

I feel for her Young people can behave like idiots while travelling and now we see it all online. When I was travelling years ago I met up with some british rugby types and they were far worse than any of this posh boys drunk and very disrespectful but no camera phones or social media so no problem! It was high jinx and I am sure not many of those blokes are the same 20 years on as will be the case with these fools

"I certainly do no agree with Mr Badawi's treatment, but if Saudi Arabia doesn't has the right to punish, but Malaysia does - because we in the West happens to agree with what Mr Badawi is standing for - I suggest that is double standards at best. But ignore me, everyone else does."

Raif Badawi is a Saudi citizen making a political protest in Saudi.

These tourists are transient visitors in the country for a few days before they continue on their way, being silly.

There is no equivalence.

"What about Eleanors 'human rights' to receive a trial based on law, not religious beliefs?"

Why do you spout so much bollocks?

The charge was "committing an obscene act in public"

It's not about religious beliefs at all.

They haven't even been jailed.

You could have been charged with the same crime (i.e. indecent exposure) and got the same punishment in the UK.

Cartoons of Prophets certainly cause huge offence and arguably people that draw them should know better, but is not an offence, outside the Middle East anyway.

As to "indigenous peoples" (of the world), history shows far, far, worse to every one I can think off, was Eleanor and others meant to be scapegoats for all those other now minority cultures?

What about Eleanors 'human rights' to receive a trial based on law, not religious beliefs?

Flashing to the mountain gods?

Which one came forward?

The 3 days was set with the knowledge that it is less than Hawkins spent awaiting trial. So it is just a small fine.

Report
maryso · 12/06/2015 12:45

Isitmebut, the facts are as they are. Offences have been committed. Three stepped up. Hawkins was caught. Six have yet to step up or be caught.

The culture that was abused is one that is more accustomed to abuse than most. It may not actually be a minority, merely less powerful; some people apparently do not appreciate the difference. It is without doubt more civilized than that of the offenders, and those who choose to defend their uncivilized actions or the extraordinarily leniency of the sentence for someone who had to be pursued and caught by the law. I would expect the other three who turned themselves in to have lighter sentences.

Even in your version of civilisation, their actions would constitute a breach of the the Sexual Offences Act, especially if occurring in similar places.

3 days imprisonment will do them no harm, and will be a reminder to all travelling to foreign countries to respect their cultures and behave themselves. No idea how much the fine equates to in pound sterling mind?

"It seems that because it is the indigenous Dusun culture has been offended, the sentence is so lenient;"

So we've moved on to offending 'minorities' now have we?

May I suggest that in the civilised world, there is more than a subtle difference between offending- and an offence,_ when dishing out punishment/jail terms.

Report
maryso · 12/06/2015 12:14

It seems that because it is the indigenous Dusun culture has been offended, the sentence is so lenient; a small fine and shorter incarceration that already spent awaiting trial. If the mainstream Malay culture had been offended, sentence may have included the permanent loss of something precious to the offenders and their families.

The Dusun and other Malaysian tribes, like most indigenous peoples, are used to suffering abuse, usually from permanent settlers. Despite this they seem to retain their gentle humanity and still perform rites of well-being for all visitors. To visit their lands, and not even comprehend this, let alone abuse them further, reduces all the offenders as so-called humans. I hope that the remaining six will be found and their sentencing reflect their cowardice and lack of remorse.

funnyossity .... Re Eleanor vs Raif Badawi, one is a foreigner on a trip disrespecting an ancient mountain god, the other is a domestic citizen having lived with the status quo all his life having challenging the religious customs of a Sunni country, when Sunni's (Al-Q, ISIL, and Hamas) are the more radical/traditional Muslim sect.

I certainly do no agree with Mr Badawi's treatment, but if Saudi Arabia doesn't has the right to punish, but Malaysia does - because we in the West happens to agree with what Mr Badawi is standing for - I suggest that is double standards at best. But ignore me, everyone else does.

Peepholes are not installed by the government, but they should do something about the peep holes and cover them up and deal with the peeping toms Dealing with both not just one issue, ignoring their own dubious behaviour but not that of foreigners is hypocrisy

funnyossity .... no one listened to our Club 18-30's Guide decades ago (called Russell, if memory serves), is this the generation that now listens to guides, or anyone in 'authority'?

I hope they didn't give him too much of a tip at the end, or maybe they didn't give him anything, which is why he dobbed them in.
